+DehnusNorder It's literally the 7th mode available on the Snes, nothing to do with add on chips. But it's not all that unique anyway, the Lynx did that effect before the Snes.

andyukmonkey Really? Is that what it is woooow. Sorry being sarcastic here. Yes I know it is the 7th mode that allows you to stretch, scale and rotate one background layer. The thing is for MOST of the games that actually used it in an impressive manner, they needed add on chips as the main CPU simply couldn't keep up. ALso keep in mind that the bandwidth is far more constrained from CPU to Memory compared to a Megadrive.

Some of these tunes sound like they're coming straight out of Super Metroid, Starfox, and EarthBound, with hints of Mischief Makers, but even though everything in Alien Soldier is perfect, I love the game mostly for its relentless and finetuned gameplay - but I think the pumping music did an amazing job subconsciously motivating me to blast through the entire game.

With good reason. You're fighting the adult version of someone who died right in front of you. She's from a dead future. You're forced to fight her while it feels like reality is slowly breaking down. And if you read the story, that's because it kind of is. This is the reason why it also feels like a proto-Suda51 game in my opinion.

I played and own the game Its a classic unique jewel of a game. As a kid back in 1995 I was only allowed to borrow the game from video rental Was £3.90 per night loved it so much then for my 21st birthday I got the game mint condition which my folks surprised me with and it was £70 which was a lot at the time. If you look on ebay an original alien solider game especially the Japanese version are crazy expensive. I have beaten the easy mode and hard mode. But easy was far from easy it was quite hard when I first played the game and took a lot of practice but its easy enough once you get into the rhythm of the controls.

I got this game during the summer. It took me two months of constant playing before I could beat it on super hard mode with no continues. Getting that game over and then going back to the title screen and listening to the title screen music was weirdly cathartic. It always made me want to try again.

This Music is composed from Norio Hanzawa and has got types also like on Dynamite Headdy remarkable. I found on investigations also out that he was also involved on this Music Departement and remastered different tunes from this series. Pretty Nice Really.

Guinness World Records in one edition described this game's bosses as two weird mash-up types of creature "and Wolfgunblood Garopa." (The record this game set was most bosses per hour of longplay time, and since it still held that record in 2010 I can only assume it kept it all the way until Mackinn7's Island series.)

I know you uploaded this video four years ago, but I see you're at least somewhat active on KZbin still, so I have to try asking something. Are you certain you used a YM3438 for this recording? I've tried three different Genesis model 2s with the YM3438, a VA1.8, a VA3, and a VA4 (even though it doesn't use the ASIC version of the chip as your description says you did), and none of them produce that strong, almost white noise sound during "RUNNER/AD2025" that you can hear right from the beginning after the fade-in and throughout the first ~45 seconds of the track. However, my model 1 VA6, with a YM2612, does produce the sound, as expected. I don't have a Mega Amp installed in any of them, but I'm pretty confident that's not the issue as the difference in treble between the first-order low-pass filter of the model 1 and the second-order low-pass filter of the model 2s is big but isn't so extreme as to be able to eliminate that sound entirely. It's clearly audible (and visible in a spectogram) on the model 1, but missing on the model 2s and you can consequently hear the PSG noise channel's synthetic cymbal much more clearly since it doesn't have that noise competing with it. The noise appears to be the result of the "ladder effect" distortion present on the 2612 but removed from the 3438. Writing so much in explanation makes me feel like I'm making this sound like a big deal, but I don't mean to be so serious. I just noticed this difference, investigated with the hardware I've got, and wondered if you could possibly have used a YM2612 and mislabeled this upload as using a YM3438 or if there's some other version of the ASIC YM3438 I don't have that does produce this sound.

It's the one that's integrated to the VDP. It's not entirely proper to call it a YM3438, but "ASIC YM3438" is (was?) the accepted terminology for a while. My understanding (I've been told) is that at the silicon level it's somewhere between the two chips--more like a 2612 than a 3438, but not identical to 2612. It definitely retains some of the ladder noise where a discrete 3438 does not. The only thing I'm absolutely certain of is it's not a discrete chip, as I did the mega amp mod myself. Maybe there are variants of the FM core between VDP revisions?

Perhaps there was some change to the ASIC itself at the time they were producing 1.8 motherboards and, since it's just a change to a chip and didn't require any alterations to the board, they didn't make a distinction in the name of the board revision. I may just have to try picking up an earlier model 2 to see how it would sound. Thanks for the info. These rabbit holes tend to go deeper than people realize.
