@Retro Game Music Me, too. I first heard it yesterday after randomly clicking midway into a video of someone's game play on KZbin and had to find out what it was called. I could have easily missed it as I was really only clicking to see what the game looked like in action, but I'm very glad that I didn't. The Genesis/Mega Drive sure was capable of some quality tunes.

This version of Gauntlet was ported by M2 back in the day. The same people that did the 3D Sega collection on the 3DS. This is a really good port of the original arcade game and it even has four player mode. Plus the music makes this version of the game amazing.

This game has a secret ending in quest mode. Well, not exactly a big secret... but i never saw no one talk about it, and it is kind easy to miss. If you start the last level before battling the gold dragon with a second player (i controlled the second one myself) and let him answer 'yes' for the treasure of eternal youth, HE becomes the dragon and you run away. The dialogue with the merchant and the ending text become totally different, implying that now people knows the truth about the castle of succession and the dungeon ended up sealed.

One of the best Sega Genesis soundtracks ever. I remember just sitting in the options menu and listening to the various songs for a while, with Sortie being my old favorite and Adventures of Iron being my newer - and still current - favorite. All of the "main" adventuring songs are great in their own rights, and Retribution is an amazing choice for the prologue. Adventures of Iron also brings back extremely fond memories of playing through Quest Mode with three of my closest friends as we battled through the final castle and immeasurable odds after many hours of shutting down the four towers. The fact that we were unprepared for our first foray and practically had to fight back-to-back in tight corridors against near-infinite numbers while our resources dwindled to dangerously-low amounts during the escape back to the main hub made that song all the more epic. (sorry about the run-on sentence) The only thing I don't miss about Gauntlet 4 were the passwords, especially since you had one enormous one for your character and one shorter one to keep track of actual Quest Mode progress. ;) And yes, I was always the wizard, because magic was always my thing. This was the first game in the series when potion use became a bit more tactical (though it doesn't compare to later games, especially Legends/Dark Legacy and the 2014 one) :) I think I might need to beat Quest Mode again soon. It's been a few years.

@LordSephleon
@LordSephleon 4 жыл бұрын
@@PopfulFrost :D My apologies for replying so late, but I never got the notice for your message and just happened to pop in to listen to the soundtrack while at work. :) The absolute first time we beat it, one of our number - the Warrior player, oddly enough - wanted to take the OTHER option, but we convinced him to agree to the same option we all did because my experience with games like that - see the first Streets of Rage game in 2-player mode - made me very suspicious of a Yes/No question after a final battle. So, we got the OTHER ending. Of course, right after the credits finished, we reset and popped in our pre-final battle passwords, jumping back in to see the other ending. I believe the Elf or the Warrior won that first one. I was considered the best technical player since I lived and breathed video games as a kid, so of course my friends all teamed up on the squishy old Wizard as soon as the fight began so they could have a more "even" battle amongst themselves. I damaged them as much as I could, though, using the Fight Ring to keep them away from me as long as I could, but eventually I was slain and felt vindicated when I saw what happened to the "winner" of the Four Hero Deathmatch. :)

Even the Snes, while it was technically superior, never really brought me back to Nintendo. I did own both systems but I still play old Genesis games to this day, through emulation. Rarely do I play Nintendo or SNES games.

@@axelfoley20 Blame Sega infighting and selfsaboting for its demise, they could have struck lightning twice with the Saturn if they didn't price it at $399, if they didn't rush it to market 6 months early, if they supported developers making 2D games, if they supported the Sega CD and 32X instead of being forced to drop it; lots of really dumb decisions.

This is maybe the best orchestral impression I've heard on the MD soundchip. Epic, haunting, simply incredible. That said, those credits under the tracklist are a bit misleading. A more fair version would be: "Main Theme and Treasure Room composed by Hal Canon, and arranged by Hitoshi Sakimoto & Masaharu Iwata. Every other track composed and arranged by Hitoshi Sakimoto & Masaharu Iwata". Earl Vickers should be removed, he was responsible for voice-overs only.

@stephen22890 5 жыл бұрын
Did you ever look into it? Hitoshi Sakimoto and Masaharu Iwata did the soundtrack. There's no official breakdown but I know their styles well enough to say with pretty good accuracy who did what. Sakimoto - "Back of Beyond", "Sortie", "Transparent Obstacle", "Adventures of Iron", "Fire Starter", "Retribution", "Betrayer", "..." Iwata - "Whisper of Phantom", "March in the Dark", "Crux", "The Spark" The main theme and treasure room tracks were by Hal Canon from the original Gauntlet. Sakimoto probably did the explosion sound too since he did work as a sound programmer more often than Iwata, although Iwata did some too so it's hard to say, not that it matters. Sakimoto and Iwata worked on many games together before and after this one, some of the highlights, in my opinion, being Tactics Ogre (Iwata's best music is on this one), Final Fantasy Tactics, Stella Deus: The Gate of Eternity, Final Fantasy XII, and ASH: Archaic Sealed Heat. Sakimoto is one of the leading composers in the Japanese game industry, and further highlights of his career that I recommend checking out are Soukyugurentai, Vagrant Story, Legaia 2: Duel Saga, Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter, and Valkyria Chronicles. Also some generally well-regarded soundtracks are Magical Chase, Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen, and Radiant Silvergun, but I don't personally put those on the same level as the ones I named. People also tend to love Iwata's soundtrack to Baroque on Saturn and PlayStation; I find it interesting and decent, but not amazing and its obscurity, the weirdness of the game, and how different it is from Iwata's other music probably have a lot to do with people's fascination. There are still tons of other soundtracks and great music littered throughout the games they've worked on and I call Sakimoto my favorite game composer and definitely in my top class of favorite musicians ever.

Wow! Never heard this soundtrack before. Really does show that if you knew what you were doing with those sound chips, you can get some really cool sounds. Very atmospheric. There's a fluidity you can get with smooth transitions between different parts in a single tune. Like the Streets of Rage ST, I don't think they could have been done on the SNES. They would have sounded stiff. Great work extracitng all this stuff!

I like this one. There's the jerky electric guitar sound in the beginning.

Yet another example of the soundtrack being better than gameplay (which isn't bad either).

this was recorded from real hardware, and if that pop is a glitch I can confirm that it came from the genesis (I own this game)
