People have had 13 years to buy the original version. Physical copies still exist, there are still thousands of unused keys, and there's the high seas for the 16 people who still haven't bought the original on Steam (or refuse to do so until it gets delisted) This isn't really an issue in my eyes. Sega is offering a new version to replace the old one. It's not like delisting Mario 3D All-Stars and offering no replacement or anything like that.

A few things, 1) yeah. It’s unfortunately a thing that they feel like they have to do. It’s a money thing and it’s not out of malice towards Sonic fans, it’s just how it is. The whole point of the gens remaster is to get new players to play the brand new version. 2) The whole thing with the denovo (I don’t care enough to spell it right LOL) lock off thing is for legal reasons. I think that games are required to use it due to piracy shit. Yeah, it’s bad for modders but, I think that talented Sonic modders can find a way to let the mod manager use mods from the OG version. The base portion is built off of the same engine. 3) I’ve been studying the gameplay for both Green Hill & Space Colony Ark for the past month n’ a half now and noticed that Green Hill actually looks like its textures have been updated. It looks prettier actually. Along with that the dropdash was added and the website did mention the fact that the game will include remastered cutscenes (maybe even reanimated??? Hopefully??? Probably not but It’s something that would be nice!!!) and I think that Roger has actually re-recorded lines for the game. His voice sounds different in footage so, we’ll have to see. But you’re wrong. While small changes, this is indeed a remaster. Not a port.

Sega has always been shooting themselves in the foot after 2011. This is just another example of them fumbling. All the creations from the Modders will go to waste unless people pirate the game now. Speedrunner approach here; This absolutely sucks. This reminds me a lot about how modern games would patch out glitches so you can't abuse it for speedrunning. I get that this is different but it still falls under the same umbrella as; Forcing us to use an updated version when some of would still like to play the old. I feel REALLY sorry for the modding community on this one. Whilst I personally never cared "too much" for generations, this is still a massive stab in the heart to anyone who is a diehard fan of the mods of SG.

ikr. This game is similar to SM3DW+BF. An old original game with a new thing pasted on top. Nintendo never delisted the original Super Mario 3d World on Wii U, it disappeared naturally along with the console. Sega is being scummy. I never saw them as friends since they are a corporation but this is ridiculous. I'm always saying that they did this package incase the shadow stuff wouldn't sell on its own since everyone likes generations. Its not even an anniversary, they could've remastered unleashed or Heroes instead. I hated Sega after they released a bad game called "Sonic Frontiers" and I also hate them for this. They fell off hard and all the sonic "fans" glaze whatever shit they pump out. Its why I'm not a sonic fan anymore.

But they KNOW that. Why do you think Bowser's Fury is only with the Switch version of SM3DW and not a standalone game? Because no one would buy the Switch version, since the differences between the Switch and Wii U vers. of the game aren't enough to justify buying the new version if you already own the previous one. And SM3DW has much more differences from it's old version compared to S×SGens (well except if you compare it to the 3DS version of Generations lol)

Yeah I figured this was gonna happen. Hopefully, we can generate enough backlash after the fact that they change their minds. Similar thing happened to Doom 3 a number of years ago where its "BFG Edition" completely supplanted the original; but in that case the fans ended up convincing the publisher to bring the original back and Bethesda ultimately made it part of the same package. I think that would be the smarter thing for SEGA to do with Sonic Generations if they can be convinced to reverse course.

While this personally doesn't bother me, because I still have my physical copy AND I'm more of a physical collector, However, I still do feel sorry for those who rather play it on PC and digitally and playing the mods of those games. Speaking of which, I especially feel sorry for the mod creators. It wouldn't surprise me. Sega delisted most older ways to play the classic Sonic games with the arrival of Sonic Origins so people couldn't instead just choose to spend, say, five bucks on Sonic 3 & Knuckles. They want your full 40 bucks. It's a scummy move, but it's exactly the kind of thing you can expect from Sega. Looking at their history, you could literally predict this happening. The only Xbox 360 games that were supposed to be delisted were those that were only playable on that console. Sonic Generations was made backward compatible with Xbox One and even received an FPS Boost for Xbox Series, so the closure of the store *shouldn't* affect its availability on Xbox consoles. But here we go... this is Sega we're talking about.

To be fair, the mods will definitely stick around. For one thing, the original version on Steam would still work, it just wouldn't be purchasable anymore. Players who already own it would be fine, mods and all. For the newbies with the new game, HedgeModManager will undoubtedly be updated for SxSG, and since the underlying Generations portion of the game is the same, that probably won't require a huge amount of reworking, or at the very least it won't need to be done from scratch (not that such a workload has ever stopped the madmen of the Sonic modding community before). Denuvo probably won't be a major obstacle because Frontiers and I'm pretty sure even Forces have that bundled in too, and HMM still functions seamlessly within those games, so the modding community has clearly already found their way around it.

tbf there's also one valid argument as in, they want to avoid people *accidentally* buying the wrong game. They are doing tons of marketing for the game but we can expect that if there are two versions of the same game on steam and stuff, some consumers, especially families like parents for their kids etc might be confused and buy the wrong one. Sega might want to avoid the risk of confusion. There could be other ways to go about it of course, such as adding warnings that this isn't the new game etc. But i think to them removing them is the easiest way.

I agree that it looks like Sonic Generations in this Shadow remaster collection is not actually remastered, but something I learned about the term master is essentially like rendering, so you master something that means you're done it's finished, so to remaster it would basically be rendering it again with whatever changes. So in the most literal sense of the word taking the game and now making the changes to make it run on a new platform would probably be considered a remaster, even though we consider it porting. Because I guess the line there is blurry when you get semantical

Its pretty odd how they delisted the game on Xbox yet Steam is left alone....for the moment, at least It makes no sense to delist one yet leave the other (insanely more popular) version alone

Honestly I’ve had a physical Xbox 360 copy of this game since 2011, I bought on Series S since 2021, and had it on Steam since last December, so this doesn’t effect me personally, but this is still an anti-consumer business practice, I’m pissed I missed out on getting 3 & Knuckles on Steam before it got delisted, I can’t imagine how people will feel if they missed their chance to get Gens before it’s delisted

Isn't that what happened with the original Sonic games being delisted from Steam to make way for Sonic Origins? I fortunately bought the Sonic bundle for years that included them before it got delisted, along with Sonic Generations. It still sucks though that Sega would do that.

Right now, SG on Steam is still available as of writing this comment, for around 20$ (70AED from where I live).

Tbh im not even surprised, they did this to Sonic CD, 1, 2 and 3 as well because of Sonic origins, now they do it with Generations but I wouldn't blame them for doing this or u would have to buy the same game 2 times

I’m glad I already have Sonic Generations 360 digitally on my Series X. If you also have a Series X, you should be able to get a cheap physical copy to play it !

I remember people fearing this when this was announced, they remastered Colors and it was a massive mess, now its okay. From what they've shown from the large amount of Shadow fanservice and levels, they are very very confident that this is the definitive version of Sonic Generations...if not then Sega made fools of themselves yet again.

This is similar with Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit's case. When Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit Remastered came out, the vanilla/original Hot Pursuit got delisted from everywhere (I think)

To be brutally honest, I saw this coming 10 miles away. As soon as SXSH Gens was announced, I KNEW Sega would delist OG Generations considering they did the same thing with the original Steam release of the Classic Sonic games when Origins was coming out. If they do an Unleashed remaster, expect the same thing to happen.

I really hate the whole sentiment game companies have with remasters. Just because you make a new version of an old game, it doesn't mean you should outright delete the older game from the store. It just feels like the companies are insecure about the remaster doing well.

Hang on, what about the 3ds version of sonic generations? Because I still have sonic generations on the 3ds. It was part of my childhood back in the day.
