As you all know, this is one of the most influential games ever made. The original arcade version came out in 1993, two years after Street Fighter 2. While most fighters in that time just cloned SF2 speciall skill and air combat mechanics, VF tried to focus more on a more realistic combat system, where the crucial point would be the combination of low, mid and high attacks, and of course hitting hard when your opponent makes an error. The combat system is surprisingly succesful and advanced for a pioneer like this, there are various throws, reversals, combos, juggles...
And that was about the original Virtua Fighter. This game I'm playing is the Saturn version of Virtua Fighter Remix, which is a VF remake that came a year after the original and just added textures to the character models, so it looks 100 times better.
This is a simple and short walkthrough with Pai. I'm not a super expert so she did a great job for me. I also could beat Dural, who is more of a bonus character than a true final boss. -

What's so funny with this statement is that the game has no lighting and shading what so ever, all it does is display the painted textures on the polygons! I agree it looks great though!

An excellent "mulligan" from the early days of Sega Saturn. I was thrilled to receive my disc in the mail for free (w/purchase of Saturn system). The texture mapped polygons still look impressive, and all of the graphics glitches (plz ignore this videos emulation hiccups) from the original VF were completely resolved. Yes, VF2 blew everything out of the water, but it's fun to play the original VF now and then.

maybe not in story or graphics back in the day but in gameplay its more "real" you know what i mean?its like almost all of the kicks and punches feel "real" like they could be executed in real life and tekken or soul calibur you just hit the buttons by chance and you do awesome combos in VF you have to know what you're doing thats the big difference!

Gotta say, suprisingly well executed for it's time. I remember playing arcade Virtual fighter where you could beat the relics out of the opponent in one arcade machine.

I swear if the Virtua Fighter games just had a balanced difficulty, I would dig it 100%! Virtua Fighter 5 FS was very good with this, seriously, that one is an AMAZING game, it's absolutely gorgeous! I especially like Akira and Wolf. But with all of the older games the AI is just way too frustrating. I mean look at Fighting Vipers. The arcade version was BRUTAL, but the saturn port has such a good difficulty curve, even Very Hard felt like a genuine challenge instead of being plain cheap. I can understand the sentiment, cos yknow it's arcade and they want to draw quarters from you. I mean sure. But a home console port HAS to be balanced to fit every audience, no reason for cheap AI there. So sad VF is so difficult in terms of AI :/

Yes it seemed so. But there were games like Tomb Raider, Doom 1&2, Quake, Duke Nukem 3D and best of all - Exhumed, which really surpassed PSX versions in a big way. SEGA did a horrible job with Saturn's launch. Daytona USA was a fun game, but the tech was really bad. Virtua Fighter was ugly too. If SEGA had launched with VF REMIX and SEGA Rally or a tuned version of Daytona USA, they would still be here. Dreamcast was way superior to PS2, it offered twice as much video ram and showed off often.

You're right. The polygon count is still lower than the Model 1 arcade version, as this is evidenced on the PC version in which you can turn the textures on or off on the fly.

Preferred the look of the original Saturn version as it resembled the arcade version pretty closely. It wasn't arcade perfect but close enough for my standards, but this remix just didn't do for it me.

PC-FX! 32x is technically 2D and is missing even more polys than the original Saturn game. Sound is also limited to the megadrive sound chip. Good load times but loses to Saturn overall. Virtua Racing deluxe on 32x was incredible though.

The Saturn could've looked better than the PS1 (having a higher polygon count and expandable RAM), but it has a dual VDP (graphics card), 2 CPU's and 6 other SPU's and is pretty damn hard to program.

The developers didn't want to eliminate jumping completely, as players who were used to other fighting games like Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat expected to be able to jump. So instead they made it very floaty and ineffective, to try and discourage players from jumping.

Sorry for the 4-year wait, but the arcade version came after the home version. There was also a standalone retail package, but it appears to have only been released in Minnesota and Canada and is now extremely rare.

It took only 4 years. VF was released in 1993, VF3 introduced side-stepping (with a dedicated button, to boot) in 1997.

awesome game. I own every collectable saturn game. I loved last bronx that was my favorite weapons based fighter long with Samurai Shodown. VF is the reason 3d is the standard and there are many stupid fanboys that fail to realize even Sony admitted it. I admit to liking some PS games but the Saturn was were the gamers games were at with better higher rez polygons.

The Dreamcast was a competitor to the N64, PS1, and PS2. They had already announced the console was discontinued months before the Xbox and Gamecube came out. As a Dreamcast owner, it was very sad to have to think all Fall about which new console I would need to choose.

A man after my own heart. I got Remix for free from Sega back in the day, from memory it was a thank you to those who got Saturn at launch and lost out due to the quick price drop. Remix has always looked like a fan mod, it utterly removes the feel of the original game. Not a fan, never have been.

@@DreamcastFan-101 Remix served two purposes: 1) Sega making it up to its nascent Saturn owners for the rushed, buggy port of the original VF which played well but did not look the part compared to the coin-op, 2) To acclimate Sega's development staff to the Saturn hardware. VF Remix was used as a testing ground for the Saturn port of VF2 which followed months later; initial tech demos were based off of VF Remix assets. That and Tekken and Toshinden had come onto the scene on the rival console, so Sega had to prove that the Saturn hardware could go until VF2/Sega Rally/Virtua Cop dropped.

hey im just kidding im not a fan boy roflmao but it was the first game i played :p i have great memories and yes i played almost every tekken and soul calibur is great too i just think VF is kinda more real i dont know but i have tekken tag and soul calibur 2 on ps2!i keep my mind open to be able to enjoy any kind of game but i will always love VF :) if tekken tag had the tekken 3 volleyball game it would be almost perfect :p anyway i prefer VF5 to tekken 6 hehe

I do not like the characters of the Virtua Fighter series, they look like Street Fighter II ripoffs (as well as Dural being a Terminator 2: Judgement Day ripoff), I like the 20 characters from another SEGA game in 1988 called Gain Ground, this game should have been a fighting spinoff to that one with hand-to-hand combat, the only characters I like from the VF series is Goh Hinogami and Brad Burns from Virtua Fighter 4 EVOLUTION.

SF could be called a Karate fighter rip off and final fight a double dragon ripoff. Other than Akira who uses kung fu not shotokan like ryu and bares some visual similarity your wrong. If everyone thought like you every game with a karate, kung fu or wrestling character would be a street fighter rip off. Mortal Kombat is a street fighter rip off. Ridge racer is a daytona ripoff, And every PS 3d fighter is VF ripoff.

Thierry Cashew There's nothing particularly wrong with the Virtua Fighter characters designs, but they are solely lacking in personality and really need proper intros and endings to explain who they are, what they are fighting for, etc. Pai is a Chinese girl like Chun-Li, but her Street Fighter counterpart is far more memorable.
