The main reason being is that companies got greedy and wanted to turn over a profit quickly and efficiently as possible. This is why we get the same 4 types of game year after year. The gaming era ended at the end of the PS2 Xbox generation. PS3 and on wards it became entirely too mainstream. No more creativity, no more experimental game ideas to start new franchise, and way too much social/political commentary. Its like the reason Panzer only got a 'remake' on the switch and not a sequel or a reboot? It doesn't make money enough for investors (SEGA).

Software development innovation has stagnated today. In those years, innovation upon Innovation, year after year, was normal for both hardware and software. Nowadays, software systems have reached full potential. Real advances can only really be made in hardware, where innovation has also stagnated. We've met the atom barrier: chips can't be sized down any smaller than they already are. The only real innovation we get nowadays is in lower latency between chipsets, buses, and CPU/GPU. Motherboards/SOC manufacturers can only optimize the existing technology. Thus, an entire new kind of processing technology must first be invented in order to make the leaps you were used to in the 90s. Also, capitalism is peaking too. Where game development used to be a space for pioneers and their fresh ideas, that community now largely exists of big corporations, who seek to make what the masses want, what makes the most money.

This game is still gorgeous. Just goes to show that's even with a dated, low-res engine, the fabulous art direction still shines through. And I loved the way Panzer Dragoon Saga made its way back through the original game and how the last level of PDS was the very first level of the first game, but you're allowed to roam freely. Realizing that the end of the Saga was right to the left of where you first start the very first game? Mind blowing.
@thestonedporcupine72219 жыл бұрын
+Aaron Starks What really shines through is the influence of acclaimed French artist Jean Giraud, A.K.A. Mobius/Gir, one of the founders of Heavy Metal magazine ('Metal hurlant' in its native, original French release), creator of 'Blueberry' and 'Arzach', and concept designer for films such as The Abyss, Alien, TRON, The Fifth Element, and The Empire Strikes Back. The art director and concept designer for Panzer Dragoon, Manabu Kusunoki, is a self-admitted fan of the now late Mobius, to the point where the Japanese release featured boxart by him. It's also fun to note is that with this game, we can pinpoint the exact time when Sega established their rather unique fantasy/sci-fi art style that they have been incorporating into a number of their titles for the past 20 years.

The music instantly put you right into the drivers seat of the dragon and that "lock-on feature" was beyond gratifying.
