I wish that during the PS1, Saturn, and N64 era that they had focused on 2d experiences a little more. I understand the 3D push during that time but we could have had the best 2d games during this period.

@@balorduomo Agreed. I would even argue that 3d games from every era turn obsolete really fast. Most people with a PS4 don't play PS3 games anymore. But somehow people keep going back to 80s and 90s 2d games. Wished 2d games continued to evolve in parallel with 3d games. It's a bit like cartoons. Hand drawn animation has its own charm that 3d animation can't compete with.

most 3d games back then sucked, even for then standards to me it seemd like something was missing. for example, i hatded tomb raider it was a pixelated mess, i could see even then that 3d is the future but it needed further development. only super mariox 64 to me its 3d version was an improvement in comparioson to its earlier 2d versions
@maroon92733 жыл бұрын
Yes, including the 6th and 7th generation. The 2D during three era would've trump the 4th gen by landslide due to advance hardware chipset and high color pallete. Making it on par with the arcade boards. Missed opportunity and im glad 2D games made a comeback during the 8th and 9th console generation. Hopefully we will see developers create scaling and rotation games.

That classical music "Ride of the Valkyries" or whatever the F, in the background of that video game was well selected by the makers of that game. I loved that game, but spent most of my 3DO's time powered on with Road Rash playing by me or countless other's while my hand's where off that 3DO controller back in 94-97. Man, you give me flashback's with smiles. Great content. I never thought I would even find out the name of that military game I enjoyed on the 3DO. Thank you kindly. Great video.

Another great video of must-play Sega Saturn videogames. And the great thing is that you still have only scratched the surface of what this system offers. As always, most American gamers have probably never heard of any of these gems, as the Saturn was all but abandoned by the time Super Mario 64 dropped. A few notes on the videogames in this video: Mass Destruction is great fun if you're looking for arcade shoot-em-up action with lots of explosions. It has a strong Amiga vibe to its style, which is probably why I love it. The Saturn version runs in 480/60 high resolution and looks terrific, much better than the PSX version, and demonstrates the system's powers when in the hands of programmers who actually bother to put in the effort. Return Fire would have made for a nice commercial release had it been finished. The late beta copy put online by the developers is nice, but you can clearly see how they still needed to optimize the program code and tighten up the frame rate. You can also see the difference between this game and Mass Destruction, and I suspect the software team basically dumped the 3DO code onto Saturn without really using the hardware wisely (the ground is probably drawn with polygons instead of 2D VDP2 planes). Still, it's good fun and an original concept. Scorcher is a hard videogame to love. Its graphics engine is excellent, as one expects from the skilled demoscene coders at Zyrinx. I could never warm up to the controls or the odd viewing angle that puts the vehicle too deep into the screen, or the high difficulty. I probably just need more practice, so maybe it's just me. Savaki is another excellent 3D showpiece for Saturn, offering 60 fps frame rate, gouraud shading and light sourcing. We also have a caged arena that never clips or flickers out, unlike Sega's efforts in Last Bronx, Fighting Vipers and Megamix. The entire game was programmed by a single individual (the same coder behind Robo Pit) and it shows in a few places, notably the looping crowd noises and the single arena. Whatever. Everything looks great and plays brilliantly, like a hyper-realistic Virtua Fighter. The name "savaki" revers to the parry move where you can deflect an incoming attack. Sega toyed with that technique a little in Virtua Fighter 3. I burned a copy of Noon many years ago but couldn't quite get into it, so I tossed my disc out. I'd definitely like to find an import copy today, however. You do a good job of explaining what you're supposed to do and how the game mechanics (RIP Bill Kunkel) work. It received very mixed reviews in Sega Saturn JP magazine, which qualifies this title for true "hidden gem" status. Solar Eclipse/Titan Wars is another quality game from the early Saturn days that holds up pretty nicely. It's basically a poor man's Star Fox that offers some intense action and interesting outer space environments. I would agree about the repetition and length of stages, but considering this was the work of a Western software studio working in a Japanese genre, they did pretty well. The FMV clips certainly give it a retro-cheese quality that MST3K fans will enjoy, and, hey, it's that gal from Babylon 5. That was a good show. Pity it's become all but forgotten. Night Warriors/Vampire Hunter is 2D arcade bliss, just wonderful and gorgeous and endlessly playable. This is where we start to point the (middle) finger at the real culprit behind Sega's decline: the spoiled, lazy gamers who couldn't recognize greatness if it smacked them clear on the face. I swear that Toshinden absolutely ruined everything. All anybody wanted to look at was the PSX "lightey glowey" effects. Everything else, including everything 2D, wasn't even given a passing glance. Whatever. Between this game, SF Alpha, Darius Gaiden and Galactic Attack, Saturn was rocking the classic arcade scene. Winter Heat is one of many examples of a brilliant 3D Saturn videogame that was completely ignored because the gamers and the prozines had already moved on. Had anybody bothered to even look, they would find a wickedly fun and addictive arcade sports title that equals, if not surpasses, the great Decathlete. Every system needs a good Track 'N Field game and Sega delivers the goods. I don't know why Sega didn't continue this series on Dreamcast, or why Virtua Athlete was so poor by comparison. I liked the gameplay and the colorful cast of characters. The JP release includes an extra athlete that was cut from the Western release, just like Decathlete. This might be a Saturn Top 10 title for me. Wing Arms, however, felt like a frustrating mess. The combat is fairly satisfying, if overly simple, and the early stages offer some fun action as you shoot down planes and battleships. The canyon stages, however...whoof, what a mess! Daytona USA caught an eternity of grief for its background "pop up," but this game is massively worse. It's a terrible embarrassment, another casualty of the early Saturn days. I do wish Sega had revisited this game a few years later once they mastered the hardware. A sequel with improved graphics, more varied gameplay and multiplayer would be awesome. Come to think of it, that's exactly what Propeller Arena of Dreamcast does. Finally, Asuka 120% Burning Festival LTD is absolutely fantastic, silky smooth brilliance from the fighting-game heavens. There are many days when I consider it my favorite 2D fighter on the Saturn. The fighting system is deep and complex, yet extremely simple enough that casual players (you know, the ones who just mash buttons until they get bored) can jump right in, while the more seasoned experts can mop the floor with massive 20-hit combos. The "Limit Over" disc that was released online by the programmers makes many changes and is probably the definitive version, but I have no idea where you could find that now that ISO Hunt is gone. Bottom Line: once again, we see that Sega Saturn works for developers who were willing to put in the actual work and learn to work the machine, as well as code in Assembly. Lazy programmers who just dumped C code from another source or merely switched off the servant CPU got nowhere fast. And this system was the victim of the worst avalanche of bad hype in the industry's history. It was the "but her emails" of its day.

@@SegaLordX Makes sense. I know many are coming from a collector perspective but you clearly play these games, which is great to see. In my case I play all the older games on an emulation focused PC , fully fleshed out , and have sold all my older systems and games, once they were well emulated. The newer shit I keep until its emulated well, and then that too will be sold. I also have been gaming since I was 6 (1986) so the history is also there. Now I have the ability to play ALL the older games from every region with instant loading, so its a very different scenario. Theres no way to sort out the thousands of games across all the emulated systems on the machine, so videos like this are great to see. Before I sold everything I accumulated a few hundred games across most of the main consoles from atari 2600 and up, but it was a very slow process and emulation really opened up all these machines to me, fully. One of the other huge features was being able to practice all of these games super efficiently and master them by practicing specific parts only, then beating them legit. Saves a ton of time not having to replay parts you already learned again and again.

Hi, I've been following all of your videos so far, as I'm also a huge SEGA fan. Love your content on everything SEGA. I just thought I'd comment on Vampire Savior just a bit. I also once thought it was a sequel, since the 3rd title was named Darkstalkers 3, implying there was a Darkstalkers 2. Apparently, the original Vampire game was a PlayStation exclusive, and would never be released on other systems at the time. While development on the original Vampire game was still ongoing, Capcom had also released Vampire Hunter in the arcades. Vampire Hunter is basically an updated version of Vampire, with gameplay tweaks and 2 new characters added, Donovan and Lei Lei (the titular Vampire Hunters). Capcom then announced that this updated game will be released on Saturn, and would be an exclusive. The Saturn version was even released ahead of the PlayStation version in the end. So it wasn't really a big loss not having the original release of Vampire. I have both Vampire Hunter and Vampire Savior in my Saturn collection!

I know someone might think something as silly as that wouldn't keep people away... Ok Thanx for the response Sega Lord. If you were to one day cover these titles the easiest way would be to stick to the main series- 0, then the remakes of 1&2, then the regular 3, 4, 5 & 6. And just cover one game per vid. If you’ve not played it pick up Yakuza Zero on PS4 (first game storywise in the saga) it’s dirt cheap now. It’s like a modern Shenmue except you play a good guy gangster. Then you’d know if you like the series or not. The latest game in the series- ‘Judgement’ features the most immersive and biggest games arcade in the series, I often think to myself- I wonder if Sega Lord has seen/played in this arcade section (virtual Club Sega) ... He’d love it.

I honestly do believe that sometimes there simply is no substitute for experience. Simply watching videos or looking at screenshots of a game, never tells you the full story.

Mas destruction looks strikingly similar to return fire on the 3do

Hello! While watch this video I discovered Scorcher and being a being a antigravity racing fan I paused, and purchased the game before finishing this video. Also purchased Vampire Hunter. And Wing Arms. 😀 Thanks.

I used to have "Night Warriors" the American version for the Saturn, that was one of my favorites for the system! I was kind of hoping "Enemy Zero" would get a spotlight on this episode, it's a good game!🎧💫😵💀👌👍 I've been on the lookout recently for a any copy of D2 for the Dreamcast the one game I still haven't played yet¿?

I remeber working for a used game store in the early 2000's and I remeber grabbing almost every sega saturn game that came into the store. The standard price for any non-RPG was $4.95 and I got a lot of my collection that way. Some of the title you mention here are ones I got for that low price. Too bad Saturn was treated like trash. It really was a system worth a 2nd look.

For what it's worth, Mass Destruction running at 60FPS like that more than makes up for the simple graphics, especially compared to most 3D PS1 titles.

I found Winter Heat to be a tedious button masher like Athlete Kings (Decathlete).
@SegaLordX5 жыл бұрын
Ever try it with a turbo controller? Those games needed timing too. It wasn't all just mashing buttons.

I wonder what happened with Scorcher. I've played the PC version since I was a kid and love the game, but when I tried the Saturn version I noticed the controls are very different for some reason, I think this is the main reason why people find it so hard. It's much responsive to control on PC.

Wing Arms is an amazing game. I just wish I could find a Mission Stick complete with a box that isn’t beat the hell out of. I used to think it doubled as a twin stick. Too bad it doesn’t.

16:21 I just have a quick question, is this the normal pronounciation of affluent in the US? Thanks.
@adamgr69885 жыл бұрын
No, I'm US and always hear the "A" as in "apple" or "Africa", but the vowel sound he used didn't sound like he pronounced it that way on purpose.
