Unless you lived through it, you can't possibly fathom how huge it was when they announced that 'Street Fighter II' was coming to the SNES. An almost perfect replica of the Arcade, right at home, to play endlessly. I read that SFII Edition of Nintendo Power every night, for months, waiting for it's release. Same for MK2, and I read my mag over and over and over waiting for it. It seemed like that summer would never end so September could get here! Now, years later, I'm able to go back and play a lot of these via SNES mini, Nintendo Switch Online, etc, but I imagine it was quite more exciting back in the day, like when you mentioned you couldn't play these on other systems, these were exclusives that served as the identity of the system. Wish I could go back in time and give myself an SNES to experience it in that time period of gaming, lol.

There are just so many amazing games on the SNES. He shows some brief footage of Cybernator, I liked that alot as a kid. Plus Metal Marines, U.N. Squadron, just too many to list. The games art style has aged well, unlike the ps1 era with its early 3d polygons.
@Shishkebarbarian Жыл бұрын
Cybernator is such a slept on game. Japan got a bunch of these types of Mech-Side-Scroller-action/platformer/run-n-gun-style games across multiple consoles and this is one of the very few that made it over here. It's a really fun game. Also, i love early 3d polygon graphics. they're so quaint compared to today but most of the games still hold up as very fun today.

My favorite all-time console, by a scant margin. I will say however, that the Japanese Super Famicom library more than plays an integral part. Games like Doremi Fantasy, Ganbare Goemon 2, The Violinist Of Hamelin, Macross Scrambled Valkyrie and Magical Pop'n belong up there with the finest North American releases, in my humble opinion. Of The games you mentioned, I keep remembering how, at the time I thought Batman Returns was an arcade port, because of those big, detailed sprites.
@ravagingwolverine4 жыл бұрын
The japanese games go a long way, as I don't love a lot of what are considered the best games on the system. Macross: Scrambled Valkyrie is my pick for best shooter on the system. I like the Mazinger game too(also by Winkysoft, just like Macross). It has flaws, but I still find it a lot of fun.

It's nice to see a post like this because all too often I've seen Genesis fans or Sega fans in general describe the SNES as having a few good first party titles that they think are overrated and a bunch of RPGs which don't interest them because of their preference for arcade-style games. In the same way that some Nintendo fans who wrongly dismiss Genesis as little more than a Sonic the Hedgehog and Streets of Rage machine should check out the good but lesser known Genesis titles (the Treasure games, the various shmups, the Wolfteam/Renovation games, etc..), Genesis fans who are true gaming fans should do the same with the SNES.

Everyone can. I was a Nintendo fanboy growing up, coming off the Atari 2600, but gave Sega their fair shot in 1998 by buying a Model 2 Genesis (own a Model 1 these days, retired the Model 2). Some of us can be fair and play games for both systems, but there are those who are so hard assed about certain consoles, that they refuse to give them their just due. If I can get off my ass and give the Genesis/Mega Drive a chance by playing a lot of it's library and buying many games for it (to compliment my also big SNES/SFC library), there are Genesis fans who can get off their ass, play more SNES stuff, and see what they missed out on.

At first I was taken aback by Super Mario World and Zelda, A Link To The Past being honorable mentions, and not making your list, but then you listed 10 amazing games that helped me to understand your point of view. Also, I have to remind myself that we all have our own opinions and favorites, and nostalgia for certain games which had the biggest impact on our lives at the time.. this factor plays the biggest role for me when I list my favorites.. some of my picks are games that weren’t nearly as popular as the games that you might see on other people’s lists. Games like Ken Griffey Jr’s Major League Baseball for instance, would be on my top 10, due to all of the happy memories, playing against my brother for hours upon hours. Another game that you don’t hear about a whole lot, which would likely make it to my top 10, is Metal Warriors. I never even played the story mode.. but my brothers and I put countless hours into the battle mode (SO MUCH FUN!).. Then we got WWF Super Wrestlemania, which admittedly, isn’t a very good game lol but back when I was a youngin, my brother and I played this game A LOTTT. Also, my top ten would definitely include Earthbound, which was my very favorite game growing up. I loved it so much, and this was before I ever knew how much of a cult classic it was lol. I have a lot of fond memories of Super Mario World and Zelda ALTTP, so I’d have to include them. Donkey Kong country MIGHT make the list. Definitely F-Zero. Secret of Mana for sure! Also NBA Jam Mario Kart gotta make the cut! Some games to consider for me would be, Street Fighter 2, Zombies Ate My Neighbors, Illusion of Gaia, Turtles in Time.. umm believe it or not, me, my bro, and my uncle, played the sh!t out of Uniracers 😆 I know the game isn’t popular among critics, but playing it against a friend, is soo much fun dude! I could go on and on and list so much more games, but I’ll spare you all. The SNES will always be in the running for the best system of it’s time, no doubt, despite the Genesis rivalry lol I was fortunate enough to have owned both consoles, as well as a ton of games for both, and I gotta say, the Genesis had a lotttt of great titles too, of which I spent countless hours playing. 😂 for ME, the SNES had the edge, but they both rule! P.S. YOU RULE TOO SEGA LORD X! I know I’m 2 years late to the party lmao but I only discovered your channel not too long ago, so thankfully I can now binge on all of your videos :)

It is fun to see a top ten SNES list from someone that was a Sega kid. There are a few games you would see from many SNES fans, but then there is a throw-away Batman beatemup, Blackthorne, and F-Zero. Fitting of a Sega kid, this is the only list I have ever seen that didn't have at least one of SMW and ALttP in the top 10. Thanks for making this video!

Snes was the main console of choice at hollymead elementary school growing up among my peers but among older kids and adults sega was king, so of course my dad was more interested in sega

I was a total SNES head in the 90s and didn't realize how much busier and faster Genesis games were which made for much better arcade style games. The SNES games you highlighted are all designed really well around the limitations and strengths of the system! Good choices!

Darin Herrick mighty in terms of library
@Bloodreign14 жыл бұрын
Darin Herrick, the things the SNES was able to do with sprites, like Mode 7,sprite rotation, and all, is what many consider why the SNES is a powerhouse. At the time, no consoles were capable of scaling backgrounds, nor sprites (Genesis actually could with software tricks if the developer was talented enough (see Panorama Cotton to see what a talented developer could do with scaling floors on a Genesis).

And after you carefully analyse it's library, you realise that those games with it's weaker CPU? It makes it even mightier.

I was one that owned both consoles back in the day, and even though I loved the Genesis/Mega Drive, I sure knew the SNES/Super Famicom was superior when it came to the software.

@DejaVoodooDoll I had a Sega Genesis too. Yeah, it’s preference. Streets of Rage was a fun beat-em up. Next to its excellent soundtrack. Although there were other excellent beat-em up’s. Final Fight and Rival Turf were fun beat-em up’s. Graphics end game play are good, soundtrack, not so much compared to Streets of Rage, but pretty good games. Gunstar Heroes is a good game too. Although Contra lll came out a year earlier. You have some good games for the SNES The same that you have good games for the Genesis. There are games that are made for each console. That have their ups and the downs. Sound is always been very important to me. The Genesis has great beats, but the sound effects are not so good. I can tear apart both consoles honestly. Dare I go into the SNES Mortal Kombat.
@n00bfishie4 жыл бұрын
It’s personal preference. Genesis had better arcade-style, pick-up-and-play games, and sports games. SNES had great platformers and RPGs. I think that looking back in hindsight the best games in the SNES library have a sort of timeless quality and stand out as masterpieces (A Link to the Past, Super Metroid, Super Mario World, Chrono Trigger, etc). But that doesn’t diminish the fact that the Genesis was a worthy competitor in its time. I will say though, I think it is a bit unfortunate also that Sega later did a lot of damage to some of its core franchises (* cough * Sonic * cough*) that have left a bit of a stain on its legacy. It also made a lot of dumb business decisions that burned a lot of fans with the 32X and Sega CD. But back in the early/mid 90s they were still at the top of their game. And the Genesis was great. If you were a kid back then in the 90s, you could have bought either system and been very happy. I owned a SNES then, but my neighbor had a Genesis, and I loved them both.
@retrosoul87704 жыл бұрын
It's certainly personal preference. But it's also undoubtedly true the MDG has its own timeless classics as well. Sega commiting suicide out of the console market from poor business practices as you said, has stained its reputation and legacy, and damaged the perceived quality of their consoles too. Leaving Nintendo fans to re-write a false narrative, at the MDG's expense. The Snes has adventure style masterpieces as Noobfish mentioned...(Chrono, Lttp etc) while the MDG has arcade style masterpieces. Imo they are Streets of R2, Alien Soldier, Thunder Force IV, Shinobi 3, Musha give or take a couple others. With so many great honorable mentions like Rocket Knight, Ristar, Monster World IV etc just as the Snes does. It's unfair that these excellent games are devalued because of contrasting game designs, and the aforementioned. Even though the Snes does arguably have a software advantage, they are both still fantastic systems, but rarely is that the narrative that I see. Usually it's dismissive Nintendo fans ignorant of the MDG library, and dismiss it with close mindedness. "Thunder Force? What's that, it probably sucks"

Started things off with a surprise by placing A Link to the Past and Super Mario World in the honorable mentions. Most people (myself included) wind up placing those games at or near the top, so kudos for being different. Happy to see that Mega Man X, F-Zero, Super Metroid, Super Mario All-Stars and Super Castlevania IV all made the cut!

There’s no wrong answer.. I place stuff like SMW and DKC at the top too mostly because I was able to finish them.. Most while admittedly great I haven’t for whatever reason.. I’ll get stuck at some point and change off to another game..

Being a Sega guy as well, I basically picked up an SNES for the Street Fighter II bundle (remember it wouldn't come to Sega for a year), and got hooked to Nintendo since then. And in that regard, Super Mario All Stars was such a massive deal, it made me catch up with Super Mario games in one package, with great quality of life improvements like the save feature. Great selection with not too obvious choices ! -

Cool to see you giving some respect to "Run Saber", even if it was just shown as footage without placing on your list. I loved that game, and it seemed like no one else knew about it. Very underrated. My undying devotion to "A Link to the Past" made me surprised to see it only make the honorable mentions, though. I think that's still my all time favorite game. "Blackthorn" looks cool. I'd never seen it before this video. Kinda reminds me of "Flashback", with the animation and alien worlds.

SLX is one of those Sega fans with sense, he doesn't beat his chest and call a console superior over another, like I have seen a number of other rabid Sega fans do. With age comes maturity, and this is a video that was done with that maturity, and mostly a fanbase that follows this channel that also has it (MOSTLY, not all who come here).

When I was really little I remember a game at the gas station called Rastan. I wasn't old enough to play it but I remembered everything about it so when I got Actraiser for Christmas it instantly became my favorite game at the time. The only bummer about the game was that no one else in my school seemed to have heard of it at the time.

I remember getting Super Metroid at launch and it blowing my mind. My brother and I stayed up the whole weekend beating that thing. Then, I re-started and carefully went over every inch of it to get everything i could. A friend told me about saving my "friends" at the end so I went back to beat it again to save them! My all time favorite game on any system. The SNES and Genesis was definitely the golden age of games. Never played Blackthorne, now I got a new game to beat! Thanks!!
