Well Gord I clicked Like because I loved it. Even though you beat me to using up my extra rings I still loved it..LOL They seem to have been meant to go together if you ask me. I have a tumbling block feature ring and a star for the bottom but have not come come up with the rest. Maybe someday. Great video my friend, Gary

Really nice piece made of your leftovers. That finish, fantastic! I think I've decided that I cannot do video Simply for the reason that I would not be able to handle the know-it-alls in the comment section. Those armchair turners or people who always know something better than you, but never demonstrate their clear superiority, are people I just couldn't handle trying to deal with in the comment section. As for the displaced, KZbin used to use a five star rating system and at that time you were rating with quality of the video, not the content. For all you know a thumbs-down could be because somebody perceived an audio glitch or didn't like the frame rate of the vase spinning when you were applying the shellac and the optical illusion it created. Keep being you and creating your videos Gord. We love them!

I understand what you're saying, Jay. I ALWAYS get at least one thumbs down no matter what I do or how many thumbs up I receive. I once blocked a viewer from commenting because he was rude and foul mouthed. Ever since that happened I get the thumbs down so I assume he's a troll and still hanging around. It actually did bother me at one time because they never say what they don't like. My friend Mike Waldt once told me "haters will hate and you can't do anything about it". He was right and now I have arrived at the point where I really don't care!! I appreciate the people who give a thumbs up and don't worry about the trolls. I really appreciate you, Jay. I will dwell on the "nice" people!! Thanks for watching, Jay! 😃😃😃

@@GordonRock1 I get it, and maybe my skin would thicken, but I know from my photography career how I respond to unwarranted hate from people I'll never meet. I guess, like you, I try to understand why. Often it's only a reflection of their own dissatisfaction, and not the work they are disliking.

I like the "Like" button so I clicked it. There is no "Love It" button so that is the best I can do. This one kind of reminds me of a glorified bee hive, perhaps a "Bee Condo". Looks so great I wonder if it was truly a random collection of rings. The "Wood Gods" surely had a hand in this. Very nice Gord...and it passed the SWMBO test. Home Run!

Yes, Gil, it was a bunch of rings made at some point(s) in the past. Not the shape I would prefer but the wood told me what to do with it. It's growing on me and it passed the SWMBO Test so it must be wonderful. 😁😁😁 Thanks for watching! 😃😃😃

I know what you mean, Wayne. We sure can end up with a lot of pieces that we "might" be able to use in the future. I might need another shop to store those pieces before too long! Might be less expensive to toss some wood and buy more when I need it. I might go into serious withdrawal if I do that!! 😃😃😃Thanks for watching! 😃😃😃

How long do you let the glue set up before putting another segment on
@GordonRock1
@GordonRock1 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike! I assume you mean another ring. I let the glue set up for about 1/2 hour before adding another ring but let it set up for at least 2 hours on the last ring before doing any turning. If I add more rings after doing some turning I follow the same timeline. Thanks for watching, Danny! I appreciate the support! 😃😃😃

i use denatured alcohol to remove the glue, just soak some on let set a minute soak again and wait then start to peel the glue off. Is there some reason I should not use denatured alcohol? Just wondering.

No reason I know of. If it works for you, it must be the right thing to do. Thank you for the tip. I may have to give that a try someday!

@GordonRock1
@GordonRock1 3 жыл бұрын
I assume you're referring to the Floating Disc, Jean. I believe it worked out just fine. Of course there is no way to see what the glue did when I put it together. As long as no glue got into the gap it should expand and contract with weather changes. If it ever cracks I will know that I didn't do it correctly. If that's not what you are referring to let me know, Jean. Thanks for watching! 😃😃😃 Happy turning, .....Gord

Hi I’m a new wood turner and using my dad’s old roc well belt driven wood lathe and looking to upgrade. Could you give me some advice please
@GordonRock1
@GordonRock1 3 жыл бұрын
Gordon, that is such a difficult thing to give advice on. Most wood turners that I have talked to have always said that once you are sure that you like wood turning you should spend as much as you can afford on the best lathe you can purchase. There are so many makers of good lathes out there that I hesitate to recommend one over another. It also depends on where you live. A manufacturer in your area may be able to supply a good lathe at a better price than you would find if you had to import one. I’m sorry that I can’t be more definitive. I suggest that you just shop around at your local Woodturning shops and see what they have to offer. I wish you luck on your search!

@@GordonRock1 thanks. I live in Pincher Creek AB do you know a good place in Calgary I could start looking?
@GordonRock1
@GordonRock1 3 жыл бұрын
Small world, Gordon! I live in Red Deer. I should tell you that I used to work for KMS Tools (Red Deer). Also, I use a Nova lathe and love it. I have friends who turn on Laguna lathes and are very happy with them. I would recommend shopping at KMS Tools in Calgary for Nova lathes and Black Forest Wood Company to look at Laguna lathes. Then it will be dependent on budget and what you want to turn. Almost every turner gets a first lathe that they think is all they want and then has to upgrade to something larger and more powerful. I’m on my fourth lathe and wish I had bought the biggest I could afford at the very beginning. If I can help further just let me know.
