Bought an SKX, loved it but tried to talk myself out of it due to the movements shortcomings, flipped it for a Mini Turtle. Wore the Mini Turtle for a couple weeks and was sorely disappointed... Just really fell flat for some reason. Flipped it and bought an SKXJ and the Strapcode jubilee. The SKX really does have this intangible character I can't put my finger on... Now it's the watch I wear most and one of the few pieces I've ever been 100% convinced I'll never sell. I don't want to love it as much as I do, but what can I say... There's just something about the SKX.

You can dress the sxk up, you can dress it down, make it look vintage distressed. You can update it, modernize it with dial, hand, bezel, inserts, crystal.. I mean its endless, you know that! MT isn't there yet! Even if it was, that 70s cusion case will limit you in range of style available to mod. Sorry, but SKX .. All day and night!

I think the dial on the mini turtle is a nice update, and the movement upgrade almost makes the price difference worthwhile by itself. Where it looses for me though is the location of the crown, the lack of crown protectors and I absolutely do not like the cyclops on the crystal. Thanks for the comparison!

I think the problem with the Mini Turtle is that it got kick named the "mini turtle". In a lot of people's minds it is less then the Turtle but more expensive. I think if it got a different name it would of done better. It is a great looking watch in it's own right.

I own a mm300, the new king turtle, and other “higher end” seikos... but i always come back to my litte skx and i know it is the one k love the most. Idk why. Its just such a charming watch that i can wear so proudly especially that it was the 1st watch i ever bought for my self when i got my 1st job. The skx is ❤️

I really love my Turtle mini, put a sapphire on it and it looks so great! This watch has the perfect size for my wrist, not too small and not too big: body is 42mm but with a bezel of approx 38mm only. Also, I like the skx but the good one for me is the skx031 (right size at 40mm between the skx013 and the skx007).

HI Jody, very nice review and comparation of this entery level divers. Like always everyone got opinion and remarks and I will use privilege to give an mine. Movement: first, day/date option give SKX advantage it is no question about it, second as a person who got SKX 24 hours a day on wrist main question is why do I need hand wound function on an automatic watch? Third is a second hand hack function: maybe it"s a usable on swiss chronometer or quartz watches, but on watches that run +/-10 sec day it's a useless. Little tip here: If you wanna stop second hand on SKX just turn minute hand little backwards and you will hack second hand. Build (case primarly): crown guard give more diver look on SKX and case appearance on SKX is more of classic (or should I say Submariner) style thus Mini-T is full DNA cushion Seiko 70's diver (which is not a bad thing at all). Dial: same thing as for case, SKX dial is for me more classic (read Submariner) style while Mini-T is more Seiko or maybe (don't burn me here, it is not any negative content) Citizen style. Red "DIVER'S 200m" is a beautiful touch in dial. Price: 7 is a not fair for a ISO cetified diver, maybe even 9 will be apropriate. How many watches on market got that price on that specs. Few mentions here: I wear mine on stock rubber strap which I found pretty OK and maybe I will swap for bracelet in not near future, for now I got no complaints on that matter. Out a box 7s26 run +14 sec/day, now is +10 sec/day (I'm not watch collector and I got Zenith Autosport automatic from my late father and G-Shock G-9100 Gulfman) and this is very acceptable for me. Customization/modification row on that sheet will give edge for SKX by no mean, I like my to be vanila and I will keep it that way. Um, the Mini Turtle has "applied" indices not printed, or rather they're stamped from the back, polished and filled with lume. Without the cyclops, the date window will be exactly the same size as the date on the SKX. Yes, the SKX is iconic. They could keep selling them exactly as they are but with a 4R36, an SKX171 dial and upgraded Jubilee or Oyster, drilled lugs, and create some limited edition and special edition versions, raise the price by $150, and people would line up to buy it.

I think the SKX is fast becoming the watch equivalent of the 1911 Colt Government .45 Automatic===> it's been declared old and obsolete, yet it still feels and shoots right, and is still the go to firearm for many enthusiasts. So what if the movement does not hack and wind - they don't keep perfect time anyway, you would be constantly adjusting it if you were that way inclined.... and if you wear it, you never need to wind it. Yes the bracelet is junk, but it's cheap and easy to swap. The thing that give it the edge over the Turtle for me is the 4 o'clock protected crown, and yes I love having the day next to the date. That, you cannot change on the Turtle...

Never change the SKX movement, the 7s is part of what makes it a legend. Yes it doesn't hand wind and hack yet it is a movement with a long history to match the case. If the SKX losses the 7s; it losses part of the history...

The hand is a proper crown guard. If you damaged the crown that means you need an ambulance, so crown guards are redundant in my opinion. Never heard one damaged crown. That can happen only if your kid takes watch and throws it around.

nvr happened to me but i do know that some guys were too lazy to take off their watch to wind it and end up bending the crowns. The crown guard kind of "force" you to take of the watch before winding the crown?

lol, i actually work on an ambulance 48-60 hours a week and have destroyed a couple unprotected crowns on the job. it is more than possible, believe me. however they were not “screw down” crowns...so perhaps that makes the difference.

I’ve had been on the fence about the SKX for a while. The main reason being every time I went to buy one, I’d find another watch I wanted instead. The other day I went to my local shop which had some SKX left in stock, and decided I was finally pulling the trigger. At the request of the shop owner (she’s sold me watches for a few years now and knows my taste) I tried on the mini Turtle. Needless to say, I failed yet again at buying an SKX hahahah. But the mini Turtle now resides on my wrist.

I wish I could like the Mini Turtle, because the sizing is great and I'll even give Seiko kudos for an interesting and attractive looking case (particularly the lug design). But the date cyclops isn't ideal and the 3:00 crown awkwardly sticks out (should've either recessed it slightly into the case like on some Doxa subs, or moved back down to the 4:00). But the biggest issue I have with it is the design of the hour-markers. I know Seiko probably felt they needed to differentiate it from the regular Turtle, but I think they should've just stuck with the indices from the regular turtle. Would've looked so much better than the weird tombstone design they went with.

Great review again. Love the SKX but not the movement. Had a 007 and sold it because of the movement. Now have a 013 and it has sapphire and the NH36A. Do not understand why Seiko don't just update the movement in the SKX watches, then add sapphire. If they did they would sell in bucket loads. Just seems daft to me.

Having owned Skx007, Skx009, Citizen Ny0040, Sumo, Orient M force several times before, Mini Turtle is far superior in all aspects. Wears better, smaller, better rubber strap, better made, better movement, better bezel action, cyclops etc... I have Pepsi Padi version of Mini Turtle and i love wearing that. Great watch, great size for under 500 usd.

I'd be very interested to actually find out the differences between the 7s26 and 4r35. Some people say that the 4r35 is just a 7s26 with added hacking/hw, however... the 6r15 already is exactly that, a 7s26 + hacking/hw (and different material mainspring for +PR). Due to the huge age difference, I suspect that the 4r35 should have some additional changes besides just an added rotor and hacking-gear, compared to the 7s26.

Entertaining review as always! I think you Could’ve included the regular turtle and made it a three-way competition. I’ve had all three and I think (other than relative wrist size/presence on the owner), the regular turtle strikes the perfect balance between the skx and mini turtle (value and price-wise, too). I enjoyed this video a lot. Great work. Mini Turtle should get more love. I personally find the Seiko design to be far more pleasing/harmonious and find the fact the that the hour markers are flat without surrounds to be a major plus.

My first dive watch was skx007, but then i felt like it has a big presence on my small wrist and so i decided to add skx013. After time, i ended up feeling the same thing, moreover, the 013 reduced the diameter but not thickness and lug to lug size which leave it in weird proportion, appearing to be sticking out more from my wrist (on my opinion). I came back wearing my 007 and finally saw and felt the magic of its proportion, feels and look. But overtime I honestly felt that SKX007 and 013 without their hand winding and hacking features are becoming like of an aging fleet, so then finally I've added SRPC35J1 mini turtle in my dive watch fleet, and didn't went wrong. Though it has a more busy dial than my SKX, it has easily won me over the two. Not like SKX, it compliments more in semi formal and some unforeseen situation, maybe because of it's smooth edge (not sure) as sometimes i felt out of place wearing my SKX in some unexpected situation. Mini turtle has this profile in lug area that will grow and grow to you, that will make you feel at time that it is a much modern and upgraded version of skx007. I have no plan on selling any one of them, in the end those magic three will stay in my day to day watch, they are all great strong watch i love.

I hear ya. skx was my go to watch.. but sometimes i felt out of place wearing it. especially in semi formal or formal settings. i was a bit reluctant purchasing the mini turtle at first.. but man am i glad i took the leap. the mini turtle is one of those watches where if you don't actually wear it, you won't know how nice it is. in weird way, i'm actually glad that the vast majority of seiko fan boys think it's ugly... just makes it that much more appealing to me.

I’ve had the SKX013, 007 and mini turtle at the same time and ended up selling both the SKX’s. Just found the mini turtle a better watch and always wore it before the SKX’s. I think it’s worth a few extra quid if you can stretch to it. As for the bracelets I don’t really like the Seiko bracelets with diver extension clasps. They always seem a bit long, look a bit ugly and unnecessary to 99% of users. The Strapcode is a better option.

Thanks for the comparison video between the SKX and the Mini Turtle. I do agree that the SKX is undoubtedly the better value proposition. For folks who could not get over the antiquated 7S26 caliber residing in the SKX, they may want to drop in the NH36 movement ($45 USD) and while you are (or your watchmaking is) at it, ditch the Hardlex for a sapphire crystal ($55 USD). The end-result will be an upgraded SKX that is more superior from a technical or specification stand-point. Just my two-bits' worth! :)

Mini-turtle over the skx any day... i don’t know the price where you are at Jody, over here in the philippines the mini is priced practically the same as a regular one... the difference between the skx and mini-turtle here is only about 50-60 u.s. $... and for that you get a better movement, bracelet and dial.

Fair summary. Although, my SKX movement is pretty good. For example, after 3 weeks of continuous wear its only fast 55 seconds total, that's around +2.5secs gain per day. The SKX is just a better design, especially when you look at them on wrist, which is what counts most. The jubilee just makes the watch look so cool. I also think jubilee bracelets age better, because of the small surface area on the links, it is not going to become a scratch fest over time.

To go from a rectangle shaped case to a circle shaped case will take some time to get used to. On top of that going from a 22mm width strap to a 20mm strap.

I've found the mini turtle at like £215 today to be fair and as a used skx tend to be around £150+ on eBay I think it's a steal, granted there's only one place selling them at that price and most are about £300 I can agree with you and if anyone wants one they should probably wait for black Friday or some other festive sales event

I think the best solution is to put the NH36 movement into the SKX case. That is becoming a popular swap on KZbin and the combination is a real winner. I think this should be Seiko's next generation SKX, after all the current SKX case existed before as the 7002 and before that as the 6309 2nd gen "lite". This transition is the logical evolution for the SKX.

Great boxing match. The MT is a better watch, but I can see that the heritage and history of the SKX will keep many Seiko buffs loyal, in spite of the movement and other short comings. The MT feels like a new micro brand compared to the SKX, a watch that I'm sure a lot of people have been lusting after ever since they became interested in wearing a "statement" watch. And even though it isn't my cup of tea, it does make a statement.

Hi Jody, Nice review and I think you were very fair with it as well. another Seiko odd thing is the 013 sks is more than the 007 and 009 on Amazon.com and Ebay.com Really odd, but it is the same with the Turtle and the Mini Turtle, they are charging more for the smaller watches. If the mini turtle comes down to around 200 US dollars or a little more I would really consider it. It's a lot more money than the sks, and I have a sks with a coke bezel mod that I bought years and years ago. It came with scratches on the crystal and a crummy nato strap but got it cheap for swimming so I could see the time and time myself so I don't get burnt in the pool or ocean. I hope the mini turtle goes down in price, I would say you got a very good deal seems like you got a 100 dollars off the price and good deal for you.

jubilee is a very good bracelet as long as you size it properly, and it doesn't stink because it let air on your wrist unlike other bracelet like oyster, you wouldn't believe it, my oem jubilee on my 009 is 7 years and I wear it everyday even when I'm sleeping not a single stretch to my jubilee

I don't understand why so many are fixated on the non-hacking attribute of the 7S26 movement. You can make the second hand whatever you want it to be by back hacking. Not having a hand winding capability, sure - that's annoying. But non-hacking really shouldn't be the issue so many make it out to me.

Another great video :) I own the prospex turtle reissue and I completely adore it. I tried the skx and there was no 'zing' factor for me at all, which is odd because it looks fabulous on the jubilee. The turtle just blew me away the moment I saw it in the flesh - strangely I had a similar feeling with the mini turtle, but I can't get beyond those ugly tombstones. Put an skx013 dial on a mini-turtle and it would look amazing, just like an SRP777 dial on an SKX would take it to the next level.

To me, no matter how you might try to break it down into separate categories, the fact remains that the SKX has style, while the mini-Turtle doesn’t. Pity they didn’t simply do a "SKX2" with a better movement instead of going with the 5-Sports' cheapening.

How a little bit of time changes everything. Now that the SKX has been discontinued and the similarly styled Seiko 5 alternatives have been introduced, the few new 007s left at my AD are more expensive than the Mini Turtle (at least in my area of Vancouver, Canada), as is the 013, while on my local used market both the 007 and 013 are priced on par with the MT (about $350-$400 CAD). I'm not in love with the MT dial design as much as the SKX, but i don't want another 7S26 mvmt unless it's in a vintage piece. Also, the MT's threaded crown is terrible. I tried all four of the examples on display at my AD and they all were the grittiest, most unsatisfying threaded crowns I've ever used, so it's either an MT that will definitely get an upgrade from my watchmaker (if the fix is reasonable), or an SKX with a scratched crystal that I buy cheap and upgrade with sapphire and a new NH36 movement. I'm leaning toward the latter. Thanks for this excellent comparo!

I’m not allowed to buy any watch over $100.00 until I get a couple of watches I have laying around fixed. I jumped at this and stopped the video to buy immediately thinking, “I’ll just beg for forgiveness later....” I saw the price and I decided against it...at the lower price yes, the higher...no way. I’m disappointed, but I’ll just keep looking for it to drop. If the price doesn’t drop then it just wasn’t the watch for me.

Between the Mini Turtle and SKX, I think that I rather prefer the MIni Turtle. I don't find the looks to be polarizing at all, not anymore than the SKX. That said, I own an SKX009J and it shares a spot in my watchbox right next to my full size Turtle. Had the Mini-Turtle been on the market at the time when I bought the SKX, I might have bought that instead. All that said, feature for feature, the SKX is hard to beat, especially for the price. I wear mine on a Strapcode Jubilee bracelet which I prefer over the cheaper Seiko version.
