? review in my mind. Because “ i know too much about watches”.. you would label the watch disappointing..yet claim to like the appearance / dial and performance? So .. your saying that if i want a watch that i love the aesthetics of.. i should pass..spend the same or more money on a watch that i personally don’t like aesthetically near as much..and all of that hinges on a $20.00 bracelet that most people are going to change anyway? I like your style at times but this review..while probably technically correct..comes off a little bit posturing ..especially since you can easily find the timepiece under $330.00 ..

You make some interesting points. I have the blue dial version and love it. I'm by no means an expert but I absolutely love the bracelet. It's soft and hugs my wrist really well. The clasp may not be of great quality but I like that it's nearly invisible. And of course you can always get an after market strap/bracelet. For the $300 or so I paid I'm fine with the value for money.

My SARB035 is made in China except for the movement. Once you open up the case it says bracelet and case made in China. Chinese factories will make whatever quality is ordered and paid for. Both SRPB and SARB parts are all made in China. Same goes for Swiss but they hide it better.

I own one of these and a SARB, I notice no real-world difference between the two movements. Both very accurate (enough that I don't notice a significant gain/loss in time unless I wear for a week or more). The decorating on these is way better, gold rotor goes a long way. At least visually, this movement looks nicer than the 6R15. I also have never tried the bracelet, knew I wouldn't be using it. These watches belong on straps anyway. I have the blue one, and the dial is worth every penny. It looks gorgeous.

I'm picking one of these up today for $273 with a 3 year factory warranty. I knew I would put it on leather when I first considered it. If you want to know where the SARB money went, look at the dial. For the money, if this watch runs 10 years, it's a bargain. I'm happy they put the money in the dial, and not in the bracelet that I'll remove and stow in the box.

I may be wrong here, but the "plastic" (cause I am not 100% sure) movement holder is there to contribute to the magnetic resistance feature of the watch. The Presage line has a symbol on the back that look like a capital U, or a magnet, which means that they are magnetic resistance.
@misterfreeze6545

Actually anti-magnetic watches traditionally have an iron ring to shield the movement from magnetic fields. A plastic ring offers no magnetic resistance.

I found it on a strap, and I haven't bought it yet but the strap seems almost like shell cordovan, which is a style I absolutely love. The plastic retainer ring doesn't bother me much because I'm not going to be looking at a Seiko movement very often. The dial is what does it for me, almost like a Grand Seiko for a fraction of the price.

In regards to comparing anything to the Sarb, I need to stop you right there. SARB is a unicorn when it comes to price to quality ratio. Everything falls short of it in that regard (even many of Seikos offerings). Most Seikos offer 4R movements for the price you get a Sarb with 6R movement. Sarb offers sapphire glass when most watches do not at that price point. Bracelet is obvious. Seikos forged clasp puts even all their divers clasp to shame. Once again I can only describe it as a unicorn because it breaks all the rules we know about what can go into a watch for a certain price.

Well, plastic isn't a bad thing sometimes. There are high quality plastics like POM (Delrin) used for industrial machines and high end turntable platters (you want a POM platter over a metal one). Imho we should get over this old school "plastic is cheap" kinda mindset. Other than that watches (as most products) are made to a price point, so if one bit is a bit more upmarket/luxuriously executed it deprives from other areas. Got a Presage SARW025 myself and really like it. Seiko has something for everybody. Even in a "serious" collection there is always room for a Seiko. My 2 cents.

To sum up your review: The watch has an accurate and reliable movement. It looks exceptional with a beautiful dial. The finishing of the case and the bracelet did not meet your expectations that were informed by the SARB line. You knew that this was not a SARB before you bought it....Sounds like your expectations are the problem. Next time pick one with a leather strap and maybe do a bit of research .... A great watch is still a great watch no matter what your expectations are. Looks like a classic case of projecting disppointment in yourself onto the company....I do agree with you in that I would never buy this watch or any of the new Cocktail time watches because of the 4R movement. The first thing I noticed was the step down in movement from the SARB065. because they were honest about it and didn't try to pass it off as a SARB and gave it a completely different model number. They are after all trying to make money and why shouldn't they capitalize on the "cocktail". Take a page from Watch On and judge the watch not the company...

I've never owned any of the higher end Seikos, but the ones I have owned have been well built, great value for money watches with throw away bracelets. I agree that at this price point a much better bracelet should be expected along with a sapphire crystal in my opinion. I would love to have a Cocktail Time, but I would include a new bracelet and replacement crystal as part of the cost. Keep up the good work.

Constructing a well thought out point requires lots of supporting evidence. It may seem like too much rambling to some but I think you do an excellent job of addressing an issue when you don't like something then you proceed to explain why from a couple of good angles I'm sorry that some people don't get that. But hey, those are the same knuckleheads who don't mind spending $400 for a diesel watch. Don't listen to them and keep up the great job of informing those of us who want to learn. Thanks.

The watch was a second-hand model I could just about afford it. I seriously have no desire to ever own another watch until they lose all this one breaks. I got the most beautiful watching the shop, where do I go from here? It's quite good I think it can save me money. I realise that whenever the brand whatever the movement you spend most the time looking at your watch. Seiko realised this and made one that so beautiful. Photos and videos don't do it justice.

Question concerning choosing between Seiko watches below the $900 price point: Is is reasonable to assume that Seiko watches with the 6R15 movement will be of slightly higher quality than the 4R35 movement? My Sarb033 is a wonderful watch purchased on Amazon for $350. Perhaps I chose a simpler finished watch with a higher quality movement? I love the look of the Cocktail, but am not willing to pay more for what I think is a "lesser" movement.

Great vid J. Just yesterday I commented in another of your reviews that I super appreciate you reviewing watches as they come from the factory, band and all. In this case that pays off in spades. Anyway, I have a SARB065 I bought new a couple months back, and I'm glad I did. It comes with a better movement (6r15D), a bit more subtle dial (small cursive "automatic" rather than ALLCAPS "Presage", more delicate indices and a blue second hand w/polished hours and minutes) and a smaller crown. The rap on the 065 has always been the leather band but I actually like it. It's not too shiny ('tho I get why it comes shiny), it came quite supple from the factory (took right to my tiny 6 ¼" wrist) and the deployent is worlds better than the one on the Presage. 'Tho discontinued back in March '17 the 065 is still available both stateside and from Japan, in fact if I read your serial number right my watch is just a couple months older than yours, with an July '17 build date. I already have a SARB033 but if the 4r35 Presage was all that was available I'd get me a SARB035 with the white face. Finally don't worry about going on too long- I don't!

Anthony, my brother, another great review. I picked up the SRPB46 as soon as it was released. The whiskey brown and the rose gold case really sings to me. My only demur is the strap and clasp. I, like you, know what Seiko can do if they want to and still have a great price point. Aesthetically, the new Cocktail Time’s are gorgeous. The way the dial plays with the light is just indescribable. I am glad that Seiko did come out with this line. But like you, I wish they did just a little better with the straps/bracelets. I always get compliments when I wear the SRPB46. Anyway, you’ve given me what I have come to expect, a honest review! I also don’t think you are being to verbose, either. This is interesting after so much time. The sarb035 and 033 and seiko monster prices have shot up in price due to being discontinued while these cocktail times have remained fairly affordable although with the 2468 dial presage released and selling well, these cocktail times may be discontinued in the not too distant future. It seems odd to focus most of the criticism on a bracelet that most will swap to a leather, perlon or mesh strap anyways.

I saw your review and held off commenting until I had first hand experience with the watch. I just bought the blue dial version of this watch. Respectfully, I think you are too harsh in your review. As others have said, the SARB 33/35 are cult favorites, but are no longer available for close to the price of the current Cocktail time. So the issue is not how it compares to the SARB, which now sells for 30 to 40% more then the Cocktail time, if you can find it at all. First of all, while the retail price of the Cocktail time is $450, the real world price is a lot closer to $300, maybe less if you know where to look. That said, I got mine from an AD for $325, and at $325, it is a phenomenal value, IMO. You have a major bone to pick with the bracelet, but while I won't say it is outstanding, it isn't bad either. The double butterfly clasp is par for the course. Not great, but I wouldn't worry about it falling apart anytime soon. FWIW, I prefer it to the bracelet that came stock with my Tissot Le Locle, and it is almost identical to the bracelet on my Tissot PRC200 chrono. The alternating brushed and polished finishes are actually fine, and while I would prefer solid end links, the hollow links aren't terrible. i would prefer a more secure single deployant, but that is a personal preference. For some, maybe most people, the double deployant works fine with what is, basically, a dressy watch. As for the size of the watch, it wears large for a 40 mm. Because this is a dress watch, in some ways, I might have perferred a 38 or 39 mm, but this is just nit picking as I already own plenty of small classic dress watches. I generally prefer classic sized dress watches, The Cocktail time sits perfectly on my wrist and I plan to use it more as an all rounder than as a true dress watch anyway, so it works for me. As for the finishing on the Cocktail time, I would give it a solid 8 out of 10. The case is mostly polished, but nicely so. I tend to wear watches with brushed finishes as every day watches, so it remains to be seen if this watch becomes a scratch magnet. In general, the case is finished better than cheaper Seikos, and about equivalent of the level of finishing on my Tissot Le Locle, which is sort of my benchmark for a $300 or $400 watch.

I know of better too after ordering a Prospex diver with a nicer bracelet than my Presage SSA303J1. (Although the Prospex was over double the price.) Man, people complain about you talking too much? I enjoy the rambles. You used to talk so much more and I thought those were the coolest videos. It gives a person a chance to get to know you. Many do watch reviews. Very few really share sonething about themselves. I miss those days J.Anthony. Johnny Casual was the master of those. No offense. Haha. Please don't just review watches. im debating between a Citizen Signature and Tag Carrera. I know many people think Tag is overpriced but I have never felt a bracelet that is so substantial and when I mention this to other people seems like they don't understand what I mean. A Tag bracelet costs 4-5 hundred, a Seiko costs 20-70. Throw a more substantial bracelet on and charge and extra 50 to 100. I would be disappointed with this bracelet but I like the watch. And you aren't too picky. I don't buy a watch unless I like every detail of it and if it is a fair price because there are so many options.

My theory is that the SARB is a JDM model and the Presage line at least this one is for Western markets. I've noticed that the JDM models are superior BY FAR to the western market offerings. It seems Seiko wants to keep the best for the Japan market and I don't know if that is a marketing thing (or lack thereof) or a cultural thing. Its a shame and they could do better in the west outside the Seiko fandom and expand their reputation outside this group, but its their loss..
@MrJamesDuffy
@MrJamesDuffy 6 жыл бұрын
From a manufacturing perspective, it is economy of scale. The larger international and Western market would make the smallest bit of cost-cutting in those watches go much further than in Japan where the market for domestic brands might not be as strong. When Seiko expanded the Presage line outside of Japan, I am not surprised to learn of these cost-cutting measures.
@Handle6478
@Handle6478 6 жыл бұрын
Yes its definetly economy of scale. But it doesn't have to be! Do the Swiss like Rolex offer inferior foreign models? How about PP,AP,VC? Ok lets go low end Hamilton. Hamilton only has one standard of offering (quality wise). I don't think the "mainstream" watch geek knows much about the difference in Seiko quality based on market models yet. Correct me if I'm wrong about Seiko being rather unique in this aspect. My first Seiko was a solar western market dress watch with a press on case back, defective solar cell, and a plasticky band. Yuck! And we wonder why Seiko has such a BAD reputation amongst non watch geeks in the west. Then I got a JDM SKX which I thought was ok.. and then I got a SARB that was amazing. Their JDM models are great, their western models are largely CRAP.
@MrJamesDuffy
@MrJamesDuffy 6 жыл бұрын
There are lot of things at play in the marketplace and in the watch geek community. In Japan, nice quartz watches like mid-range Casios are not regarded as inferior to low-end mechanical watches. I like to think that Japanese-made goods in Japan are seen with the same point of pride as an American seeing "Made in USA" so even they assume and expect a higher standard. Given the penchant for the west to fetishize Japanese heritage and culture, something I am definitely guilty of, it doesn't help that the differences between JDM and international models is often conflated with K and J models and whether or not "Made in Japan" is printed on the dial and case back. I hear a lot of KZbinrs and Seikoholics complain that Seiko is somehow "saving" the better stuff for themselves and I am simply arguing that there is much more to consider than one's own expectation for the price. The Mechanical and Spirit lines (SCVS, SCVE, SARG, etc...) are good examples because they are JDM yet many of those models were popular enough to continue production and fulfill the demand in the gray and export market. However, Seiko does not have to weather the cost of the supply chain beyond manufacturing because they are not being sold directly to Seiko dealers outside of Japan, or in some cases, Asia. The export and gray market sellers are the ones paying for the unregulated distribution model charging whatever premium the market and their margin allows. Now that Seiko themselves are distributing more of these watches outside of Japan, their cost per unit has likely gone up and forced them to cut corners. Again, just speculating.
@Handle6478
@Handle6478 6 жыл бұрын
I agree with pretty much everything you theorized on. Honestly my (Unpopular) opinion on Seiko is that they will have a very hard time penetrating the Western market these days. With the rise of smartwatches and all, I think the lower end of the market is pretty much dead and thats where Seiko plays best at, at least in the west. Maybe thats why Seiko is focusing so much on rebranding Grand Seiko. We'll see, but outside of watch collector communities I really just don't see any Seikos out in the wild at least in the New York area. Either ways I'm not Seiko's target audience anyways :p. My current (Soon) goal is a Nomos Tangente and my grail is a VC and an Omega snoopy from the early 2000s. Their designs /= my tastes currently. Thought about their enamel dials recently and they just seem too me too typically Japanese, austere and precise. Cool designs though for their target audience.

Great review. It’s good that you are being critical. To be honest, I don’t think the bracelet quality would worry me so much. I have 2 Seiko 5s which people make out have the worst bracelets known to mankind. Yes they are cheap but for me they are super comfortable and no one is going to notice the low quality unless they are a watch nerd. What would concern me is case quality though. You mentioned the lack of variety in textures on the case and I was wondering whether you think that this makes the case look cheaper aesthetically than it would have been if there was more variety of brushing and polishing like the Sarb you have has. I don’t mind high polish all round if it looks classy but sometimes it can make the watch look a little one dimensional. I feel the Tissot Visodate is like this- it is one my favourite watch designs of all time but somehow it slightly disappoints in person and doesn’t look as expensive as in the videos! Whereas my Orient Star Classic is the opposite - the finishing in reality is amazing for the price and better than I had hoped for when it arrived from Asia. I certainly want to check out the Presage cocktail line this summer in person though, as I love the dial design and would consider buying if I like the case and dial quality enough when I see them in person!

Absolutely agree with you regarding the bracelet. My Blue cocktail came with same bracelet and I found it to be cheap looking, loose butterfly clasp, noisy, wobbly, basically anything bad you can say about a bracelet. I took it off right away and put a strap on it instead, which looks 100x better anyway. Thanks for the great review!

Why didn't you get the srpb43? Basically a thinner version (4r movement, and very minor changes to the hour markers) of the original cocktail time and costs just over $300 I have the sarb065 and due to my short fingernails, I had difficulty pulling the crown out, I always wanted an onion crown on it and would have loved a thinner version as it is a dress watch and the new model gives me all that! But this new model is another way to introduce someone to a quality mechanical watch.

Late to this. Still got the presage? I've got 3 presages and I hear you but you can pick them up a lot cheaper now and, as usual with Seiko there are all kinds of variations with different spec; one came with solid end links, two didn't, the Zen garden one has Sapphire glass and a normal size crown and looks more like the Sarb. Weird

I completely get your POV but I’d say a more fair point would be: Dial aesthetics If a beautiful looking dial is your priority for a watch with this price then go for it (compared to other brands and styles from Seiko) it fairs up nicely compared to what it costs. If you want to have a watch that checks every mark for value, then you’d be a 100% correct. You’re really paying for aesthetics which a lot of people can’t afford beautiful looking watches that cost $700+. For the price, the SRPB77 arguably has one of the the best looking dial

Agree with everything you said except for the retainer comment. With that said we all know that Seiko saves costs on its lower end watches by cheaping out on the bracelet. I still think the watch head alone on most of their watches is worth the price tag. If you enjoy the watch swap the bracelet out for a quality leather strap or put some Milanese on it.

The problem is there is nothing really like this watch. The Sarb065 is still considerably more expensive, without considering import cost. 4r35 is a decent movement which is sure to last a long time. The new cocktails fill a gap in the market that was void. It's not perfect, but I would still recommend one. The only other option is the sarb065, offered only in one color with 2mm more thickness, at $150 more nowadays + import

I just picked up an SRPB77 today at my LWS - I have to say the only disappointing thing to me is how sharp the edges of the bracelet are. That makes it quite uncomfortable. But at this price point, I expect flawed bracelets from Seiko. That's the way it is. If you want better, buy a more expensive Seiko or upgrade the bracelet - which you can easily do. But I think I'm going to order some Perlon straps for it instead. The hollow end links don't bother me at this price point - they're fitted extremely well to the case. Same for the butterfly clasp. And the fully polished, relatively simple case - perfect for this watch, where all the focus is on the dial and hands. That's where this watch knocks it out of the park, and why I chose it over the more conventionally styled SARB035 - which is now discontinued and roughly double the price on the used market. They're just so different watches that I wouldn't say that one is better than the other. The Cocktail Time just eviscerates 1930s-1960s modernism so well, which is great - and the SARB takes a different route stylistically. Also, I own a Grand Seiko SBGF017 - which the SARB035 is styled very closely to, just with a plain white dial on the SARB instead of the cool geometrically patterned dial on the GS. The GS is a high accuracy quartz, and guess what - it has a plastic movement spacer, in a watch that cost several times more, even used. It doesn't really bother me, nor does the plastic spacer on the SRPB77. It's well hidden - you can't really see it through the back unless you hold it at just the right angle with a bright light shining on it. Not a big deal. A 6R movement would've been nice, but again not a big deal to have the 4R. The only functional difference is the power reserve. AFAIK the movements are pretty much the same otherwise, with the 6R just adjusted a little bit more precisely. Really, the one other thing I would've liked to see is a proper acrylic crystal instead of the Hardlex mineral crystal. It would fit better with the vintage look.

Disagree on all points. It's a tremendous watch for ~$300-350. Comparing to the Sarb is not fair as we were stealing those from Seiko at those prices - they could have sold them at $800 all day long. Not every model can give you such value as the Sarb - if they did Seiko would go bankrupt. For the money, the SRPB is a great watch.
