Jerry made a joke about L-dopa and it reminded me of a good movie based on true events called Awakenings. It stars Robin Williams and Robert De Niro and it is centered around that drug because of what happened one summer. Nominated for best picture and a couple other Oscars. I don't remember the name, but "The dingo ate my baby" line is from some 1980s movie.
@lazyatthedisco15 күн бұрын
"The dingo ate your baby" came from a very real crime case, where an Aussie lady claimed her son was taken by a dingo while camping. In the end she and her husband were convicted of their son's murder. Despite its dark backstory it somehow became a meme before memes were a thing, kinda like the Harambe of the 80's.

Every since I was a kid ive loved when Elaine says "Maybe the Dingo ate yo' baby!" lol But I recently listened to a podcast about the news story that made them put that line in there from Australia. And its pretty brutal! As im sure you can imagine. And apparently this episode made a lot of Australian's mad cause they were making light of the situation. Understandably lol
@JeffSchall14 күн бұрын
I mentioned it elsewhere, but the story is this: this has aged extremely poorly. On August 17, 1980, Lindy and Michael Chamberlain's nine-week-old daughter, Azaria, went missing from their tent while they were camping at Uluru in Australia. Lindy claimed that a dingo took Azaria, but prosecutors rejected her story. Lindy was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison, while Michael was given a suspended sentence. This joke was made on Seinfeld, which was amusing at the time, because it was making fun of a woman had blamed a dingo for the disappearance of her child. HOWEVER, Lindy was released after new evidence in 2012, including a jacket believed to be Azaria's, was found near a dingo lair. Sure enough, a coroner ruled that Azaria was killed by a dingo.

On the topic of furs and animal products, it's a nuanced discussion. There's a world of difference between using products from an animal that died of natural causes, or more humane processes (think free range versus caged egg production); the industrialization of furs and other products at scale with only the economics considered or using plastic based textiles made by the petrochemical industry that are filling the world with microplastics and other pollutants. Take for example Native American tribes, they used a whole range of animal products, leathers, skins, furs, hairs, innards etc and lived in relative harmony with their environment. It's the industrialization, competition and economic survival under a system that rewards exploitation and suffering that is the real problem.
