You forgot to mention to always check for medical ID such as bracelets or necklaces which could potentially provice information if the person or child has epilepsy or other conditions that can be provided to the EMS.

hello my name is Sophie and here is my epilepsy story when I was a baby i had a febrile seizures i stopped breathing and turned blue my mom gave me mouth to mouth and by the time the EMTS arrived i stopped seizing . In pre k i would get angry and punch any thing that was in front of me that is when it was suggested that my parents should take me to a therapist. he took one look at me and said that I was having seizures he then referred me to a neurologist. At the at the age of 5 I was diagnosed with childhood absence epilepsy but have been seizure free since the age of thirteen and so was taken of meds which caused massive weight gain a hand tremor and memory loss. The point is meds are good up until a point an then it becomes a pill no pun intended. my triggers are flashing lights, specifically the transition from the out doors to inside a classroom getting too hot photo and recently sleep deprivation. my parents were told to treat me as a normal child and to see how fare I would develop and look at me now I have graduated high school with honors though I did hope for a regents diploma but after taking the algebra common core regent seven times starting out with a 40 and ending up with a 57 oh well. I start collage in July not august as you can infer I was not expected to do much of what I just mentioned The effects of my seizures is that i have orthotic because due to my seizures that i had straight feet at birth i also have a sensory processing disorder. i have low gross motor control and other motor issues as well. After my father died, it seems I have had a relapse if that is possible. i still have my absence seizure but it is not enough to put me on meds . i have been getting driving lesson and have 10 -20 seizures in the drivers seat. i take omega 3 cod liver oil liquid form as i can not swallow pills this helps decrease the too -small -to -medicate -seizures i have very small seizures that show up on the EEG as misfired neurons and the Dr. called them "flurries" so here is what my flurries are typically like i will become very spacey i can not interact with my surroundings i also felt locked in to place. i am completely aware my vision becomes like a tunnel and thing start to move or vibrate on there own an absent seizure lasts 1 second but these flurries can last 5-10 minutes.

To the ProCPR people: You might want to re-do this video. At 1:30 you have mention of different types of seizures and go through several types including grand mal, petit mal, tonic clonic, and so forth. You make it confusing because tonic clonic is the same ( more modern) term for grand mal seizure. The same goes for petit mal and partial seizures which you didn't even mention. It is good to include grand and petit mal seizures as previous terms for TC and partial seizures. The way you have them worded, it sounds like the TC, partial, grand mal, and petit mal seizures are 4 different seizure types. That's just going to confuse people more.

@@johannthomas6085 For the sake of simplicity, we will talk about the tonic clonic seizures (formerly "grand mal" seizures) as these are the ones that may or will need help. There are other types of seizures as well. Absence (formerly "petit mal" seizures), simple partial seizures, and complex partial seizures The latter is usually a predecessor to a full blown tonic clonic seizure. But let's go now to address the video. The video is quite accurate I'd like to clarify some things. Again, this sounds as if he's suggesting that there are tonic clonic, grand mal, absence. AND petit mal seizures. Of these 4, there are only 2. Now it doesn't really matter all that much in terms of whether it is an adult or child. What you do is the same. As I understand it, the general rule to follow is that if the person has a seizure, and there is bracelet, necklace, or wallet card that identifies that they do in fact have a history of epilepsy, that calling an ambulance is not necessarily needed UNLESS the seizure is more than 5 minutes, the person has 2 seizures back to back, or some indication that they have had a serious injury such as being at the top of a flight of stairs and fallen down the stairs during the seizure. In either case, there is no problem with calling an ambulance if you are at all uncomfortable dealing with the situation or have any doubts. Sometimes businesses will call an ambulance anyway even if the person has woken up and has said they don't need one. That's to cover the business from any potential issues with liability. Last but not least. What was said about holding down the persons arms and or legs during a seizure. This could potentially lead to injuries for the victim (what he calls the patient) or the person providing first aid. Apparently, some people seem to think that doing that will stop the seizure. The movements you see during a seizure are the results of the seizure. Sort of an electrical storm in the brain.

what do you do if they start to fight you when they are in the recovery phase? I had one person fight to stay on their back when i tried to put them in the recovery position. I didn't struggle back, I just let him go on his back until additional help arrived. meanwhile I continued assessing level of responsiveness and airway. was this correct?

I have gran mal seizures and after dealing with it for a few years I have learned that for most people, including me.. when we come out of a seizure we get super aggressive and defensive. We aren’t doing it on purpose it’s just something going on in our brain trying to help keep us alive because our brain thinks we are dying. It’s super weird but just know they aren’t intentionally doing it and they have nothing against you.

I have had epilepsy since I was a baby and I am 29 years old this year my seizures are Absent seizures I pull at jewellery and make funny noises and I can not see out of my eyes i don't know where I am when I have seizures I also get so tired I fall asleep for 2 or 3 hours

Thank you. I feel bad for everyone having to watch me to through it. My question is are these side effects from some injury or vaccinations earlier in life. Mainly head injuries. Stitches were required, but I was just a baby then. I had fallen back off of a rocking horse, and busted the back of my head on a radiator. 1962. Thanks again.

You said we have to wait until the seizure passes... could you interrupt a seizure? (Such as sleeping walking?) Also how long does a seizure take, does vary?

I have gran mal seizures. No you cannot interrupt a seizure.. there is a medicine you can give to the patient that can stop the seizure but it’s not a 100% thing and yes, seizure time does vary.. I’ve had 20 second seizures all the way up to my longest which apparently was 2 and a half minutes. I’ve broken my should, torn muscles, and cracked my head open all from them.. They’re a really shitty thing I don’t wish on anyone. When you come out of them you don’t know your own name or where you are, you feel weak and your whole body hurts and that’s on top of whatever injuries you get from dropping when the seizure takes over.. also, at least in my experience, they’ve completely destroyed my memory.. people can tell me things and I won’t even remember I talked to them 20-30 minutes later and I used to have a very good memory.

No, seizures cannot be interrupted. It must be allowed to run its course. Do not attempted to restrain a seizing person in any manner, only move with them and help them stay out of danger. My wife has epilepsy, and I can tell you that this advice works wonders, esp. when she has a wandering seizure.
