Great information! Thankfully, the more reputable tanneries have informational KZbin videos and can easily be found online showing their process and the impact they have on their local environment. Some tanneries are not so quick to share that information. Purchasing from responsible tanneries is definitely a wise investment.

Unfortunately I can't handpick the leather I purchase because the nearest shop is just too far away. One thing I've had difficulty with is the temper of a leather. How do you know or how can you discover how soft or firm a leather is without being able to get "Hands-On"?? Also, would it be possible for a video on how to properly condition hides and/or projects?

Is the imported leather you had said you really enjoyed working is this like Tandy leather that comes from Mexico or Brazil? I enjoy watching your videos by the way and have watched several. I have a small leather shop. I started with Tandy little kits for a little bit and went right into my own stuff making my own belts, rifle sling, purses, and a few hats. I have bought Herman oak and do enjoy some of the qualities but actually I really like the Tandy leather as its just softer and feels really nice for much of what I like to work with. Tandy in Tacoma Washington has been beyond excellent. They have several women that have worked for Tandy like 10 years. I like Tandy's upper grade A full grain leather. Is this the leather you like? I do like Herman oak as well.... :)

It's more like Tandy's euro blend. Super smooth and soft.

thanks for the validation on the leathers, I got a belly to pracatice on and as you say it will stretch even though I put tape on the back. I decided to make a personal addition to boot bags for my Lucchese boots and used the belly. All went well to last piece. I love a basket stamp since childhood and tooled the belly with that and the last one was mushing over when I tried to stamp. Fortunately I saw it early and was able to accomodate for the leather and it turned out ok.

Thanks for the info! A few years ago, I got a couple of econo imported hides from Tandy that to me STANK of piss-I thought I was crazy but now I know it was real!!! It was horrible to case too-practically had to rub the water into it. I'm loving that W&C russet right now. Good to know you have decent imported stuff too.

How do you get a leather supplier to send you good leather when you buy it on line ? For some reason whenever I buy online they send me leather with multiple flaws

Find one you can trust and have a good relationship with them. That being said, you must keep in mind all leather will have flaws. Suppliers can't just keep the flawed leather and sell the perfect stuff. No-one has ever called a store and said "just send me any ol crap you've got"... but almost everyone says "send me your biggest and cleanest piece".

Careful with HO. I bought a shoulder from Springfield a couple of years ago and it was garbage. Grain side was covered it bites and scars, and the flesh side looked like it had been taken off with a hatchet.

They can be rejuvenated with products like Lexxol as long as they're not too far gone. Fold a small sample in half (smooth side out) and if it cracks, it's too far gone.

You know how much a raw fresh off the cattle hide sells for to a tannery ? Two years ago when I sold mine ....3 bucks 🙄. Now I highly doubt they have as much invested as they charge for. I’m sure markup is insane.
