that is a self imposed "no power equipment" ... who are we to judge what you are using to get a job done. You have pulled off more work in one day than most people do in a year. you are living within the environment not removing it. we love your work & play and your documentation of it. I have noticed that a lot of youtube watchers find it easy to complain and suggest to you different things qwhile sitting back and watching your videos. Unless they have done done this on their own at your age should just sit and shut up. For myself I find that you are one of a very few homesteaders that would be able to accomplish all that you have done and are doing now.

@Peter Flood I agree and I like that Shawn explains how difficult is to get things done. A simple thing like supply with water, what we take for granted, requires so much effort. Unless you build your house or grow your own food, you do not know the true value. All of us caught in the grid are complaining of being paid less that we deserve, and looking for buy cheap and of quality. And throw away a fruit that has a stain. when you grow your lettuce you know the value of every leaf. I think that every youngster should have a compulsory year of self reliance at a farm. And after a year, when the stock received is done and there is almost nothing left to the nest occupant, maybe will open the eyes.

Basically, we tend to forget that WE are part of the ecosystem also...like the wildlife. Our needs for survival are different - we can't hide in a cave and wait for winter to pass us by, for example. We are part of nature and heir to it too. But perhaps we should take a lesson from the wildlife - and the ancient Native American way of life = take from nature only what we need. Know where the line is between need and want. Don't be a mega consumer. Shaun PRODUCES what he uses... and nothing in excess. He works harder than most with conventional jobs. But no one else rules his days- and at the end of the day, he can sit back by the fire with his cup of coffee - and Cali - see what he has accomplished...can't beat that with a big stick. Harmony...
@ehombane
@ehombane 3 жыл бұрын
@@up8yrs Yep, only what we need. The key element. Tough to draw the line. Do I really need half degree more heat in my house? Or an weekend half across the world? I remember of an extreme case. A guy living in a shelter made of sticks. Only to protect him from rain, not wind or cold. Without fire. And was well below freezing. Cheated out of his studio by a greedy wife this was the solution he chose. Pension enough for food, but not more. And he was educated, enjoyed poetry and using his brain. Irony is that not cold killed him, or bears, but thugs for the change in his pockets.

I love that your using power tools because I dont want you to ware your self out and not be able to enjoy your later yrs of life once you ha e all you cabins and things built again. Believe me I've been through 2 right shoulder replacements and it hasn't improved , and the left shoulder needs replaced but I'm waiting It out since it didn't help with those 2 replacements . Both knees have also been replaced and there's still pain and issues with them not being able to get down on them and work anymore. And I also have carpel tunnel iand arthritis in both hands/wrists. And arthritis throughout my body all from over 30 yrs of building and uhpolstering furniture and of coarse sports throughout my life until the issues stopped that also. So please for your own sake use what makes things easier and faster for you Shawn. You showed us everything you can do with hand tools during the first cabin homestead build we definitely know and see how great you are with your hands and hand tools and all the wonderful tricks you've learned along the way. Please take care of your body its the only one you get and believe me steel and plastic in your joints will definitely change what and how you can do things and will stop you from doing some things. Push ahead but be easy on your body your a strong man but don't over do it. God bless you 🙏

Shawn James, this is your land, your homestead, your life and your right to build however it is best for you to build. You want to remember the making and crafting with the same satisfaction that you do the end results of what you make and craft. Use tools when you deem it necessary, and the rest of the time enjoy the peace while you use hand tools. You know what you are doing, and power tools used too much attract too much attention, not to mention disturb the wildlife and your own enjoyment of the peace and natural sounds. I think by now we know you only use power when you have to. You have my deepest respect for being true to your own ethic. So, when you have to use power tools, I for one never think less of you. That is how I ran my own gardening service back when I had it. No gas tools, only occasionally electric, but 90 % of the time I just used hand tools. Some of my clients hired me because I could spend the whole day working on their yard and they didn't hear me. :-)

One very much in agreement. Need equipment for all these heavy stuff. We are not disappointed the usage of equipment. Shawn you don't have to clarify the usage of equipment to simplify hard tasks. I'd prefer to see it being used. On so many reasons.first need to keep your body maintain from heavy wear and tear. Many things could happen, eg slip disc, hernia, arthritis to other injuries. Please please do work smart. Need not to justify explain. Time is of essence. You'd need to build your residence properly so that to be able to house your family. A comfortable and stable property. So if you need to use crane/digger/ mixer and other gadget please do.. it is interesting to see how the combination works. Since you produces your wood planks to beams, it is interesting to see the modern application. Also timeframe is too short of to use ancient method. You'd need to prepare your food gardens and all. time is best manage so that you can do other stuffs in the homestead. It is interesting to see the application of modern tools power tools such as drills, nail guns, insulations, solar lights, solar power,.solar spotlight, solar base materials, infact attach bathrooms and toilet hahaha.. and also cement mixer, water mills for supplying water to the kitchen sinks and bathroom via tanks, mini electrodam to supply electricity to your home. List is endless. Also applications on the berm and swale around the fruit trees and vegetables plot. So you save water and energy from watering the veg daily. Also all those technical yet with modern applications that encourages the usage of nature. Smart living with nature and ingenuity methods. Btw please note the mushroom logs, keep it at a shady cool, damp place throughout the year. Away from smoke and sunlight. Onhot day nice to spray water. The mycelium produces spores and smokes kills the mycelium. Sun too dehydrated and kills the mycelium. It need constant dampness. We build a shed and hose with water on hot dry day. In warmer country they build it in the wooden shed with walls and doors. So it kept the temperature.and logs wet and damp. On hot day they spray three four times. The grounds was all pebbles.and sands.

Shawn I don't know about all of my fellow subscribers but I think the use of power equipment of any kind can only benefit you, especially at this point. I'm 100% for it. You've accomplished so much already, please, take any advantage to save your body and precious time as well. To heck with any haters as one will always have a few ignorant " detractors". Warmest Regards from Arizona

Happy Birthday, Shawn. At 51 I'd be using the power equipment too(I'm older lol). Get the heavy stuff done, and then go back to less when you are situated. Enjoying it all.

Please don’t be concerned with criticism about using power equipment - go for it! Part of getting older is you become more wise. Knowing what the body can do and importantly, what if can’t do when older, is a matter of keeping yourself safe, especially when working alone. Loving this new chapter of your self reliance.

Shawn, age come with other issues and we do not have any control. You have to take care yourself, we are not to criticize anyone. You minimize the use of motorize equipment a lot but don't hesitate to use it when you need it when you reach my age you are going to be thankful. I love not to disturb nature but my health come first no matter what trolls think about it. Take care 🙂 I do enjoy your videos and I whish I could be there breathing nature. Thanks, Happy Bithday young man !!

Shawn, I don't think you need to apologize for using some power to accomplish your build. Remember our fore-fathers used oxen, horses and community to accomplish what you are doing on your own. I am 76 years old and was raised on a Manitoulin Island farm before the Island had electricity. Keep up the great life. Arnie.

I hope that your new hooter location is not a hike from your new cabin. I guarantee you that as you get older, the distance you must walk to that outhouse is going to become an issue, especially for a woman or if you are experiencing some type of intestinal upset! That said, Happy Birthday Shawn! Hoping you have an awesome day! Take care! Ohhhh... to be 51 again!! Lol Whewwww

You don't have to apologize for using power tools. Just like you say, sometimes it is wiser to use them. Personally, I have a deep respect for all the manual work you do. I had switched to power tools sooner. But, like you, I love the silence of nature. Nice to see you busy at your new place. Good luck. I keep following you like I've been following you for years :-)

"And now I need a workbench back here too" is one of my favorite endings of these videos for some reason. As for the use of power tools, etc., you need only to answer to yourself. I know you're making all of your choices thoughtfully.

Happy 51st. birthday Shawn. Personally, it was a relief to see you using power tools, I'm sure that our settlers would have jumped at the chance of using power had it been available. Can't wait to continue following you on this new beginning. Looking forward to also seeing you and your family enjoying you new home. Give pup a kiss from me. Cali is enjoying new adventures herself.

I'm a 21st-century carpenter, the more power tools the better. I'm all about making my life easier! Once the cabin is done, you'll have plenty of time to listen to nature; at least until you start the outdoor kitchen, bathhouse, greenhouse, screened-in porch, building your furniture... oh well, maybe you won't have plenty of time, but you'll keep me occupied watching you (LOL)!

I have a 10kW off-grid solar system with 28kWh storage and I'm at 63 degrees north. This runs the lights, pumps, ventilation system, washing machine, etc. The only months that are difficult are the three darkest winter months (November, December and January) - for that I use a generator that can use vegetable oil/reclaimed cooking oil. In summer I have so much excess that I process all my wood for winter on it (wood splitter, electric chain saw, etc). You should have no issues with a solar system at your location especially with some back-ups just in case.

No need to validate your use for having to use "power," I'm sure the majority of your meticulous followers understand a certain need for unwanted noise. Your achievements thus far have been praiseworthy and your love of nature is commendable. Cheers from Texas
