I bought a Woodmizer LT15GO with a power feed last July. I’ve used it to mill the lumber for a 8Hx10Wx20L firewood shed, a 10x12 storage shed, and a 12x18 greenhouse with an 12x6 chicken coop. Word has gotten out that I have a mill and I’m now doing side jobs with it for $50 an hour, plus blades and fuel cost.

I'm pleased you (finally) bought a mill. I enjoy watching them work. It was 'painful' watching you use a chainsaw mill when you had so much work to do in a season. It was also intense watching you muscling logs into place on an overbuilt structure. I like the balance of efficiency and effectiveness in your work on the new place.

I'm a general building contractor, where I live in northern California, dimensional lumber is up about 180% and pressure treated lumber is up 200%. The real hit is on manufactured products like plywood, tgi's, lvl's, glulams etc., they're up 300%+ depending on inventory. The manufacturing shutdowns from the covid closures has depleted inventory everywhere on nearly every construction related product. I was just told by one of my electrical supply houses not to expect to items like romex, wire or main electrical panels till at least June.

You are correct, the price of lumber in the states, I live in Florida, has gone through the roof. Formally a piece of treated plywood costing between 30-45 US dollars is now up to 95 dollars here in our local Home Depot. You are very fortunate to have the resources to mill a great deal of your own lumber instead of having to purchase. Love your videos, they or to be more accurate, your location, sounds and demeanor are very relaxing. The best of luck to you.

Get a butt end of the log! Lol you crack me up! Sorry there are many other outhouse jokes.... I grew up going to the bush off grid cabin since 1970,. Before that we were in tents or rented old logging camps. During March break we had a toilet seat by with a handle warming up by the wood stove. When nature called we carried it out to the outhouse. More times than not it landed in the deep snow and cooed off quickly. When my parents retired to the off grid camp they added a large extension, dug out a basement put in two bathrooms with real toilets. adding a septic field. My mom was very pleased. At 88 and 91 they travel with my brother once in awhile up the old bush road to spend a few days fishing. Now my brother has this property to enjoy .

OUTHOUSE CHRONICLES: We used lime in our outhouse - drop some down the hole every morning, no smells all day. We also attached a real toilet seat with a lid, so no “pinching” worries. It also felt more civilized. LOL We also put raw meat down the hole when we closed up the camp in the Fall. Maggots would magically appear and dispose of everything. We’d come back in the Spring to a completely empty facility. Never had to move the outhouse in the 32 years we had the camp. EDIT: We were a family of 6 and our camp slept 16, so we almost always had guests. That outhouse was well used.

Shawn, Glad to see that you have not let milling lumber become a limiting factor. All your projects will become think em and do em projects. I am trying to get out onto the allotment more regularly. Mid April/mid May is planting time. Having been shielding at home for more than a year, my physical condition is poor! The work is taking much longer and of course being subject to a stay at home order I've not been in the sun much, so the freckles are out and the skin is red. I did make an asparagus bed and planted it up today. Just keep chipping away. Something to enjoy next year. Regards Stephen.

Shawn the price of wood has doubled and in some cases tripled here in the great state of Pennsylvania. On a different note, love the outhouse. They deemed them illegal here in PA. If you have an old camp that has one on it, that’s ok but they require it to be pumped out once a year based on how many people are using it and how often it’s used. The Amish community is constantly battling the state over this since they generally don’t have indoor plumbing. Composting toilets are permitted but they have to be NSF approved. This isn’t the greatest or “kindest” state for homesteading. Love your videos and the content. Keep up the hard work and it’s gonna pay off. So sad to see you have to move and more sad for the reason that you had to move. Stay safe and God Bless you and your family! Can’t wait for the next video.

You never know what your dog is going to do when they encounter their first bear. I had two German Shorthaired pointers, and one didn't want anything to do with a bear (he actually saw the bear). The other? well, suffice it to say that I'm glad that dog listened to me, because he was getting ready to bolt after it into some swamp/bottom land. He had not seen the bear, but was hot on it's scent trail. I know that all bears are BIG bears, to those not used to seeing them - but this was a very nice bear (big head, little ears, belly not too far off the ground, and when it turned to run .... all you could see was this gigantic bear butt beatin feet! We have some very large Black bears here in Pennsylvania ... with one weighing in at 879 pounds. I know that was not the first or the last bear that my dogs encountered. They range a lot when we were out for a walk, or hunting ... but on one occasion I could hear heavy footfalls and a commotion, followed by something big going up a tree. I could hear the crashing and see the tree violently shaking. Again .... it's really nice when your dogs recall to whistle commands~8^) Take care ... be safe.

Hi Shawn, your 'chimney' at the back of the outhouse is spot on, in Ireland and the UK they are taken off the back of the W.C. to vent the toilet it's usually a 100mm diameter pipe that extends approx 1 metre above the highest window or over the gutter / soffitt. The purpose is to vent the foul smells and it uses the air to keep the soil reasonably dry.

Here in the US the color of the tag denotes the year the bear was tagged. It also warns hunters the meat may not be safe to eat for year after it was tagged due to the bear being chemically immobilized. I hope that made sense. Tags do not necessarily mean they were a problem bear, usually it means they were tagged as a method of tracking and counting populations.

I was just going to post that comment. Can't be too good for the drive wheels for the blade or belt inside. I would just cut the verticle molded plastic pieces off. Clog enablers.

With regards to the outhouse, you can also use the wood ash from your fires to sprinkle over human waste thus keeps the odour down to a minimum. The chimney idea looks logical.

Wow, I have so much I want to say. I hope Cali stays clear of the bears, I would be so upset if she were to get swiped by that bear, or any of them for that matter. Now, thank you for explaining what that flu was for. I was wondering what it was when you built it. Please let us know if it works. I have never seen one B-4 in a outhouse. Heat rises so, I think it might help. Love this outhouse, Interesting fact, the crescent moon was to signify a women's outhouse and a star or a sun was to signify a man's outhouse, for people who couldn't read!!

It is absolutely true in the US. Prices are 3x what they were last year. Shawn, would you ever consider doing a Q & A video? If so, where do you stay while you are building the new cabin. Also, I'm a bit disoriented, is the workshop you built on the old or the new property?

I would add some hardware cloth at the top of your vent to keep wood ducks out. They are notorious for nesting in open chimneys and often get stuck. They prefer to nest about 100 yds. back from a pond. Bats may also be attracted to your outhouse as a roost. Pretty hard to keep them out as they can slide thru small crevices. Maybe if you put out some bat roosting boxes, they would prefer them, no odor. Perhaps bear steaks will be on your menu this fall!

Hey Shawn, at deer camp we have used a regular toilet seat mounted on top of the boards for years. It works great and gives you more comfort. Also, when you are done using the outhouse, you can shut the lid and and it will make your vent tube work even better. Just an idea. The outhouse is looking good. Nice and rustic!

I think in areas where there are inspections, that your lumber has to be graded. Using milled wood for studs and floor joists might not pass. Someone in the states mentioned that in one video I saw a while back.

I'm sure where he is he doesn't have to worry about code, like most rural areas, even in the US. Surely CA is similar in that way. I would hope.

Vent should work. I would glue it to make sure it has a good seal top to bottom. You not want to loose suction in the form of leaks.

Shawn you got saw dust clogged up in your mill. Nothing is coming out the chute and its being pressed through the seams on the guard around the blade. Need to clean all that out so not to screw something up. 👍
