I had to stop watching the show because it was really upsetting for me as someone who suffers anxiety and depression. But I do not think it is fair to blame a show for someone's inner turmoil. Yes it is triggering. Absolutely, 100%. However, I don't understand how the show would make someone WANT to commit suicide. I have had suicidal thoughts. And watching that show made me think about the hell I would pull my family and (few) friends through. I believe Hannah's weakness was meant to instill strength in others. There was other things going on in that poor girls mind that contributed to her eventual suicide. I'm so sorry for their loss and I think it's understandable to want to find someone to blame because it's such a senseless heartbreak.

Completely agree, to me, as someone who knew what it felt like to be on either end of the story, the series showed the horror of suicide, it certainly doesn't glorify it or make it seem in any way extravagant. I think it's helpful for people who haven't had to struggle with depression/anxiety etc to really see how it can take over your life and make you become an extremely troubled person. It's shining the light on a topic that's been so taboo for so long.
@ixchel003

It’s not that it makes you, the triggers can be an extra “push” that feeds the thoughts. Suicidal ideation and self harm are much more complex than simply deciding or not deciding to “do it”. I think the show missed the mark. It had so much potential but it definitely failed to reflect the hope it claims have wanted to offer. I thinks it’s more alarming that mental health professionals try to warn people against watching it but people still defend it. I’ve also heard that they consulted with someone from a Suicide prevention organization, and although he discouraged them from releasing it they still did. I think they had their vision and they wanted to put it out regardless of. They should have consulted with a professional throughout the project if the intention was to help. The reality is that Selena and the Netflix team are a team of artists , marketing people, directors and such and although their intention might have been good they did not execute the show in a way that was safe for the targeted audience. Was it provocative and interesting to watch and do these topics need to be discussed? Most definitely, but it was not made in a responsible manner.

we live in the time with most ''suicide prevention companies'' in existence, as well as the highest rate of suicides... we live in a time where parents have their kids living in a bubble, a time of participation trophies and trigger warnings, and when those children finally get to experience the real world, they cant take it, thanks to their parents having them live in a safe bubble up until that point, thus getting upset over a show that portrays real issues in a realistic way. it's important to see/lesson to learn how your actions affect other people, both hannah's decision to commit suicide and the people who pushed her to do it. its not glorifying suicide, it's doing the complete opposite. the suicide scene is terrifying and it makes me never want to do this to myself or my parents, not the other way around. the father is just looking for someone to blame since he cant cope with his grief

Its not always a persons choice to "stay strong", clinical depression is a chemical imbalance in the brain, that can make someone think and feel like they have nothing and no one (even if they have everything). It is not something everyone can control, depending on the depth and intensity of their own depression. Sometimes a small trigger can lead to catastrophe, and that show may have been the trigger, you never know. And the dad just wants to find the reason why his daughter reached such a low state, to go through with suicide. Because he is more than likely riddled with guilt, because he didnt truly see how bad it was for her, until it was too late. I really feel for him. X

Ethan Cooper really bad message then, because it tells you that after committing suicide everyone around you is to blame and it is shown they just feel guilty. But know one really talks about her as a person, how she was, what was going on in her mind not in a really good way anyway. No one really does that, there just scared that they would be too blame for her actions. Really bad story

Ahana Dey I agree with you at some point. But the show takes it way out of order... And they seem to care a lot about the incident to a point where everyone thinks they are guilty, so they hide the tapes from everyone .... They make such a big deal out of it. That's just stupid in my opinion.

cutelittleReis90 True but isn't like every other tv series like that? Even the most real of real tv series is going to show something or the other that is surreal. Let me tell you, entertainment (any form) is influential. True. But should we stop it altogether for people who get influenced by it's negative aspects? I think people should think what is worth what in their lives. First of all, analysing Hannah's character, a lot of things happened because she repeated the same mistakes again and again. And yes, a lot of people are like that in the world who don't learn their lessons in the first, second or any go at all. This series just showed, according to me, happened the way it did because of those tapes. Do you think if there was no tape, they would have ever felt guilty? Hell nawwww. It's the sad cruelty of western system. Either you learn and adapt or get consumed.

Ahana Dey yeah, you're right. But I don't know,I just felt it just wasn't the right story to make people aware of the subject, or it could have been told differently. there is something called getting professional help. was he like: my daughter is depressed, she's watching a show about suicide, instead of stopping her and getting her help and being there for her, I'll let her watch it, I won't be looking out for her as she is depressed, and get mad when she commits suicide and blame the show instead of taking the responsiblity and guilt.

Tabby TheNutellaFlavoredUnicorn I’m sorry, but it’s unfair to make these accusations when you really don’t know anything about the situation. The father very well could have been getting help for his daughter. And he could have told her not to watch the show, but ultimately he can’t control her actions. She could have found a way to watch it, even though her father didn’t approve. We don’t know how they were handling the situation, so we shouldn’t just jump to conclusions.

People with depression often want to watch shows and movies that are about this kind of subject. It might be because they want to have some kind of justification for their feelings and feel not alone. BUT 13RW made a person in that state even feel more alone but (what I thought was even more disturbing) blaming everyone else for your depression.

I’m really happy it help you, but what the father is saying is something that happen to many, the show did try to send a good massage, to stop bullying and for people to take care about what they said, but also showed people suicide as an easy get away, I didnt dislike the show but in the book she never dies. There’s so many ways of sending a massage. So im happy it help you, but i also feel empaty for the dad. The girl didnt deserve to die. And even though she made her own choices when humans are dealing with depresion they tend to not look for the right help, to block every part of their brain that rationally thinks of better outcomes. Everybody is different but depression is always the same. For me is the worse psichological DCs, and sadly the highest the level the closer to the end. Again Im happy for you, Im happy that your Self-estime when from low to high, but for some it wasnt like that. I’m just 15, but im still able to give my opinion.

Natalia V.D i completely disagree. It does glorify suicide, the suicide scene was not REALISTIC at all, and made it look quick and easy. Also it does not meccesariyl show consequences. Its horrible. When someone dies. Their life is over. Done. And people grieve. In this show, hannah is still alive and spiting people. Completely glorifying death thinking she is living on. I dont care what the rating it, there is no excuse to show a suicide scene or rape scene in a show that you know young people will be watching. Selena wanted to help, and shock people, she went against EVERY piece of advice organisations gave her. Its shocking alright. Triggering.

Riley Posey there might be, the show has sparked major controversy; like no other normal show. Where I live it was covered on the radio-news. And also a report of a kid who took suicide and might have been triggered by the show. Some of the stuff that might be triggering are: showing the suicide and method of suicide, Hannah getting revenge using her suicide (the tapes are a sort of revenge) getting what she wants (revenge) whit suicide as a means to that end. Nitpix (his video has some good points but he generally and (bias) hate the show skip the first 7 minutes of the video if you so decide to watch it) made a rather interesting video on the topic, but I would very much like to read your arguments for why it’s not triggering.

The reality is, there was suicide before 13 Reasons Why and there will, unfortunately, be suicide after. Who said that people who are suicidal will feel better after watching the show anyway? You knew going into the show that Hannah was dead so what did someone who was suicidal hope to gain from watching it? I think the show was meant to help for those who are mentally stable. I think the show gave great warning signs of how someone acts when they are contemplating self-harm. People say it "glorifies suicide", but it's reality. Teenagers go through that stuff. It's absolutely horrible that this man's daughter killed herself, but blaming the show is ridiculous.

Lol it’s a bit too late to say that the movie “warns people who are suicidal”. Every movie nowadays has a freaking warning. It’s not uncommon to find a disclaimer before a movie. What makes you think people would actually follow the disclaimer and exit out of the movie? Instead of leaving a dumb disclaimer which the movie didn’t have-not that I even remember seeing it, proving how insignificant it would be if there were to be a disclaimer-in the beginning they should have clearly warned people who are suicidal to NOT watch the movie. I actually like how you admit that the movie IS the enemy to people w/ suicidal thoughts or who have depression because a lot of her fans disagree that the movie triggers suicides. They’re wrong. Anywho, it was their mistake for assuming that this kind of movie would help people. In my opinion the movie doesn’t help anyone in any way. It’s dramatic, unrealistic-in a way where suicide is reality yet they portray it in such a dramatic way. Death is the end-no more to end. There were people who are lucky enough to be “saved” by the movie but a lot despised the movie, myself included. Hell I wish there was warning to not watch the movie. I literally watched that crap when I was at the darkest spot in my life.
@livefoursims1839
@livefoursims1839 6 жыл бұрын
L N But it’s not unrealistic. Suicide is a real thing. That happens to real people. In the show Hannah is dead at the beginning. The tapes is her suicide letter explaining why she committed suicide. Dramatic? Maybe. Unrealistic? No. And no Death is not the end. There are consequences after suicide. And that’s what the show was intended to shed light on. It was meant to help suicidal people and it did. It showed that killing yourself only brings pain and suffering to the people who cares for you. It also showed that there are ALWAYS people who care for you no matter how alone you feel. It made many people who were suicidal realize that they have people who do care for them and no matter how hard it gets to never just throw your life away. It also showed people the effects that bullying can have on both the victim and bully. And there were many disclaimers in the show. Just because some people ignored them you can’t blame that on the show. And anything could’ve triggered that poor girls suicide. She was already depressed the show couldved contributed to it but anything could’ve triggered it. Blaming the show or it’s producer is erong

it's not about it being trendy, it's about triggering someone. a person with a relatively "normal" mind isn't going to see that and think to themselves that since i just watched it i'm gonna go off myself, however, people suffering from depression/other mental illnesses are so much more affected by seeing scenes of suicide, self harm, ect. and they are targeted with this book/show.

I understand that. But the show CLEARLY states at the beginning of episodes that it has triggering scenes and to watch at your own risk. It's not the shows fault that people who get triggered ignored the warning and kept on watching. And by saying "trendy" I'm talking about those parents who think that the reason their kid wants to die is because media made suicide become "cool" (I've met parents who actually think that).

13RW is a show, that is created for people to talk about. To show that people CAN HELP you, if you talk to them. They want kids to talk with their parents and get help, if they are having problems. That is why they NEEDED to show the WORST case ever, to make people UNDERSTAND how important it is to take care of eachother. And how serious this topic is, you never know what is going on in somebodys life, before they talk to you. They want to PREVENT suicide, obviously. They want to show how bad a situation can be and how suicide is NEVER the solution. People, instead of putting down a great show, because it gives suicide attention, use it to talk to your kids/friends, and help them. They did a great job with this show, please be kind and respect such a strong, important message.

I don’t think the problem was the awareness they tried to raise. It was how it was delivered through an unhealthy point of view and how they did not necessarily accompany what you should do along with what you shouldn’t.

Charlotte Meffert this should be a top comment. Because that's the problem with this show... It tells kinda : That you will get your revenge even after suicide... That the world around you is wrong and to blame. If they would have been more sensitive about the subject they would have explained all the a aspects that can cause depression... And that it's not just caused by people around us... I didn't even like Hannah because of that blaming others thing. And it wasn't a realistic view on depression and what's going on in a persons mind

I fully agree I left my own comment if you would like to read it, but one of the reasons why I think it’s bad is because it uses suicide as a means for revenge. And that the gets her revenge she got what she wanted people are listing to the tapes it shows that people will care after your dead. And also a girl in your class killing herself is bad enough but living whit the guilt that something you did triggered that. I get that is fair in way since it’s true but it’s also so messed up and can ruin someone’s mental state. Besides this is not a just one suicide there has been multiple triggered by the show. I did a quick google search and found articles on articles about the bad effect it may have on peoples mental state. I even heard about the show and it’s damaging effect on the radio news.

Mi mull I agree 100%. And it makes it so unrealistic that she does get her revenge at the end. In normal life it doesn't happen that way, when you're gone you're gone. But this show makes it almost appear that this is a way that you can life forever. And no graphic scene can change the fact that people might be encouraged. :/ it's just sad. My brother killed himself not even three month after the it aired. Even if the show wasn't the main reason for this , I can't help but wonder if it triggered him, too.

I do think the effect of this show is something that should be explored to prevent this sort of thing. There are in fact a lot of suicide prevention companies, that would say the content of the show is in fact harmful. So the claims of it being triggering is not whiteout reasons. A lot of you only care about the suicide that happens in the show but not about how she got there in the first place. All of you sicken me. She didn't try to glorify suicide, she tried to show that people's actions usually causes people to commit suicide. Also if the dad knew his daughter was depressed why not try to find a solution that helps her? I'm depressed myself but my parents did something about to help me. I honestly find it very disappointing that you aren't paying attention to the real problem in the show. Many people made fun of the fact that Hannah made tapes before her suicide and even made memes and saying "Before I die I'm going to send tapes to the people I hate😂 Lmao".

T-E-X The show makes it seem like suicide will solve your problems. It makes it look like you can use it as a sort of revenge to get back at people. It also shows you everyone will constantly think about you and appreciate you. Yes that will happen ( but it will last for a month, you get a page in the yearbook and then everyone goes on with their lives forgetting you). I am sure season two will give the impression that everyones lives will still involve you long after you are gone.It gives the impression of still being there even after your dead but no. When you're dead youre dead. People who want attention for their depression will see this as their haven for a spotlight. Sure it gives great awareness. But it does glorify it.

One thing which I don’t get is when people blame the show for getting them triggered. Like hunny there were trigger warnings, you knew what you were getting yourself into, so why blame the show? Take the blame but no they don’t, they’ll call out the show and every person who is part of it but won’t own up to their mistake. If you can’t handle the show or if you think that you might get triggered then simply ignore it, it’s not that hard.

I feel that the show is great for people that are not going through any of the topics on the show. It’s good to relate to someone in a show sometimes so you don’t feel alone but in a situation like this it’s not the best choice to watch it. But also if you aren’t going through anything like this then it’s great it’s a great awareness to people out there who don’t understand what it’s like to go though these things. I do feel that the scene we’re Hannah kills herself that was taking it too far. I know the meaning behind it was not intended to look this way. But if someone is going to get triggered by the show it’s going to be that scene.

Miá M You’re right. The problem right now is people are blaming the dad and people like him for blaming the show for their kids’ suicides-because “they shouldn’t have watch ed the movie if they knew it was harmful to their already illed mindset.” The actual problem is before everyone even knew this movie glorified death there were many kids who are suicidal that chose to watch it. No one freaking knew the movie glorifies death until a month or two or even months later! How are these people blaming suicide people who choose to watch the movie NOW? Everyone knows that movie glories death now. People are protecting the movie yet the movie still hasn’t done anything to prevent kids with depression from watching the movie. Not sure if they care to prevent suicides or care to make money and publicity.

They actually had already altered the ending...in the book hannah swallowed pills and died that way....they decided to go with something way more gruesome ...her death scene in the show was extremely hard to watch...it looked painful, sad, lonely, terribly difficult...they did that on purpose to show that suicide isn't a painless action, even for the person committing it. There are also trigger warnings before almost every episode and even has a special at the end detailing resources and ways to get help.

Yes, there are troubled teens and people and It is a very rough issue but In my opinion, It was the responsibility of being aware of your child and doing what's best for your loved ones. I'm disappointed with your response to the father's grief. Having sex and committing suicide are very different things. Suicide is often triggered by depression that is something that can be triggered by many aspects of their lives. Of course, you can try to avoid these triggers but this can be difficult with social media, pop culture, and being a teenager. Whether or not the show actually caused this girl to commit suicide or not, it did glorify suicide in a way that I'm not sure anyone intended.

It doesn’t help me cope, and I’m sure not everyone feels “saved” by the movie. If anything, the logic 1800 actually saved me.-he clearly blamed the movie for triggering his daughter’s death. If it’s truly a shows fault we should just cancel everything because in all honest anyone can find something negative about anything “____ show is teaching my kids to have sex” “____ show is teaching my kids to rebel” “____ show is teaching my kid how to dress inappropriate” “____ show is teaching my kids bad words” there are always going to be negative and positive opinions, not everyone can be satisfied. If he wants to make such a difference why not go try and help other kids with similar issues and help in bringing awareness to suicide..

Crescent Moon “do some research” I’m sorry? Do some research when I have already watched the movie? All I’m saying is-why should I do the research if I have already subs-consciously saw the “trigger warning”? By sub consciously, I didn’t see it and remembered seeing it. My point was that the warning is obviously insignificant. I didn’t even remember there was one-my point, exactly. Why should I do my research- as in, let’s finish the movie, feel triggered, “do my research”, and realize that there was a trigger warning all along? That’s not how it works. Some people accidentally looked past the trigger warning. And just to inform you, I watched the series on the day it was realized on Netflix. Meaning that I have watched it before the everything even became a controversial topic. My next point is-now, people know about the trigger warning, but in the beginning no one pay any attention. Therefore, before the trigger warning was super insignificant to the eyes of many viewers, me included. Now people can choose to watch it or not to watch it but we can’t deny that the producers should have aim higher on showing prevention if you are suicidal-do more than just a small “trigger warning” in the beginning-so insignificant.

I lost a teen sibling to suicide a few years ago. The people that bullied her...after she was dead. They basically said rest in peace buy it wasn't my fault then they turned their backs and moved on with their lives. Her bullies got to go on and get their licence, and go to prom, and go to college, and will get married and have kids etc. She didn't and won't get to do any of those things. The people that did end up feeling horrible and guilty were the ones that cared about her in the first place.

only having 'Young Thug' on the album made me so sad because there was a song that got cut by Camila with Ed Sheeran called 'The Boy'. Camila felt that the song didn't work with the album so it didn't make the cut.

But I feel like it kindof glorifies suicide. Plus teenage suicide is HORRIBLE but what about abortion! Murdering babies is okay?!?!? There is this thing called waiting for marriage to have sex! Don’t kill the babies you make because you have no self control!!!

The show doesn’t do a good job at showing the right things, yes, the show has some positive messages, but I didn’t get the positive messages. maybe it’s because I’m depressed, but that doesn’t change the fact that it affected me badly. I mean, the show was made to send a message around, to prevent suicide. that’s just my opinion tho.

R.I.P... You would think the father would take some responsibility for not taking more of an interest in his daughter's t.v time, and all around goings-on .if you believe the rumors! grief makes you lash out at the wrong people. Which is why Selena should stay away. this is 2 be expected, (I believe) from her team! if they know what they're doing, but at the end of the day I believe the show brings awareness and makes the adults who's responsibility it is to direct these lost young people on the right path 2 surviving bullying and shaming. Make no mistake it is torture.

I understand the dad man, I lost my sister to suicide and I know what it’s like. You look for something/someone to blame for it, you want something to be mad at when in reality the only person you can be mad at is the person themselves but you refuse to be mad at them, you can’t be, it hurts to much. He just needs time to learn to accept it and continue to move on. Understand, the shows not to blame but understand the dad’s hurting and he wants answers. It’s a horrible thing man, it really is.

13RW, was based around the stories of the books that were written, the show does not glorify suicide but rather show us how stupid it is to commit to it. We all have problems, issues, and conflicts, we don't always want help with things so don't always reach out for the help we need, we want to do things ourselves, even through we always have support if we need it. this is so true for kids and mostly teens! it is no-ones fault when you lose a life, only the life that chose to be lost. we should support 13RW and try to prevent any more lives from being lost!!

Suicide has always been a problem and 13 RW just shows what real life is. So many teens get bullied, are sexually abused, suffer from PTSD, depression etc. and they don’t get the right support from school or parents. 13 RW was very hard to watch for me since i had to go through same kind of things, but it helped me to get help from professionals. It is very sad to lose someone because of suicide but still it is not selena‘s fault or the shows .

The whole "inspired to commit suicide" thing is a social myth. Media about suicide DOES NOT CAUSE suicide. Suicide is so much more complicated than that and people who say that are being disrespectful to suicide victims. They're basically saying "this person was so stupid and shallow that they mindlessly copied what someone else did on a media platform". That's not it at all. Suicide is a deeply personal matter to each and every victim, and it isn't a choice made lightly. It's not like someone who is suffering will watch a show about suicide and think "oh, what a great idea!" There is so much more to it than that. This guy is just looking for someone to blame for his daughter's suicide instead of looking for the true cause of it and the truly personal and private problems that led her to consider ending her life.

I think everybody knows what they can handle in a show. 13RW had many warnings on not watching if you can’t handle it. I could handle it, and I told my friends to not watch because I don’t think they can handle this. If you watch and you can’t handle it it’s not their fault. You need to talk about it with someone if you can’t handle it

In my opinion, 13 reasons why doesn't glorify or romanticized suicide. If you watch 13 reasons why: beyond the reason, you should hear their reason as to why they didn't want to sugar coat Hannah's suicide. If they did, everyone would've been even more pissed. Also, if parents are concern, they can go on Netflix, go to the parental controls and there, after creating a pin, the parents can control what there kids can and cannot watch. So parents have ways to prevent it also. Also, from a neurological point of view, the prefrontal cortex isn't fully developed, it's developed until the age of 25, so teens don't know what their own actions.

Thirteen reasons why is a series that shows us the value of the people around us and how what we do can sometimes affect them. I am extremely sorry for his daughter's death but there is no reason to blame Sel for this. The series teaches us so many morals that we tend to forget.

okay about the selena getting sued situation, selena did not force anyone to watch the show and although she was involved in the production of the tv show, it is not her story, i think people forget the fact that 13 reasons why is a book which i read years before the show was even created so you cant sue the show because there was a book that was widely recognized and then turned into a show. the story is not hers and she did not force anyone to watch the show and there is a warning before watching the show and people who choose to continue to watch after the warning is watching at their own risk. there is no talk about anyone doing anything because of the book and that was what the show was created off of. just because someone learns of this story and acts on it now is not the producers fault, the show is only bringing awareness to many serious topics. and the producers or writers or author of the show and story are not responsible for anything that an individual may do once their media is out there.

Wtf? Why does everyone have a problem with selena? Sorry for your loss but do not fucking sue Selena. That girl diffidently needed help if she killed herself over a show that wasn’t even real, and her parents not realizing that just shows how much of bad & biased parents they are. The show had a message, and if she didn’t get it she needed to stop watching it. Lord oh lord, what’s going on with America😩🤦🏻‍♀️ It was about suicide awareness, fuck that father for blaming it on selena. Selena wasn’t even the only creator, and there are so many shows out there related to this. Knew someone was going to call out selena for this. Fucking tragic. This guy is hungry for money, season 2 better come out, selena worked her ass off for this.

People fail to realize that 13RW was a book first. Ultimately it’s personal choice. I struggle with depression and mental issues myself, but don’t blame a show for your lack of responsibility or the role you played in it.

I agree with you completely. He's not a bad dad or person but Selena is not to blame. Everyone lost in this case and you can't really blame anyone for suicide unless they bullied the person and made them want to die. She had problems before 13RW and I feel terrible for her. We need more representation of mental health issues and I think Selena pulled us all in the right direction.
