My mentor was mentored by Maslow. He taught me that while Maslow's model is helpful to aspire to, we're not as rigid as one single hierarchy. In other words we're not going to be actualizing our potential in all areas of our life all at the same time.

What comes across strongest about you is your freely expressed spirit! I am almost 60 and only two years ago, I finally found an explanation to my existence. My spiritual life stems from A Course In Miracles of which I am guessing you may know a little about. Since studying "the course" I have peace in my life like never before and I am now with a man who is the love of my life. What you are teaching closely parallels A Course in Miracle, and I find it serendipitous and fascinating that I found you on the internet while I was looking for a way to stay motivated to lose weight. I hope to learn more about your one-on-one coaching. Thanks Leo, you are one evolved dude!

I first encounter of this term self actualization, came when I was a freshman in college, and I took a course in Psychology and Religion. The subject defined me in so many ways, that it intrigue me! I realized, that I was like this from a very early age. My religious upbringing with my Parents and Family, had something to do with it. In many ways polishing what I already felt and gravitated to. I am one of eight children, being brought up and having many challenges as a youngster. I was exposed to a lot of things, I was not free from making mistakes as an adolescent, but I grew from what I learned, and most of all, I learned the benefits, far outweighed my personal gains. I had to except my conditions, and at the same time work with what I have. That didn't always go over so well, but my endgame was always aimed at achieving my goals for all to benefit! I came to realize that if I benefit from anything I always wanted anyone and everyone around me to also benefit from my successes, and I wanted to share whatever, I gained with anyone and everyone! When you share these thoughts with people, their first reaction is this is beautiful but it's not realistic, and then they fail to want to make any concessions and try to achieve these goals for the whole! I hear sometimes on the news this comes up, the world of Kumbaya, and then people laugh and snicker at the idea! And I say why not, why shouldn’t we shoot for that, as a species (human), God has given us a choice, The ability to learn, and adapt! I think when we learn this and want it(to be self-actualized) The goal will be your contribution to life in the world that you live in! To make the fabric of life better than the day before and to help pass it on! And it all starts and ends with you! The world today is excepting the bad guy, greedy guy etc. as the excuse for why he or she does not, seek to achieve self-actualization We owe this to the world We as a people should be honing this concept every day of our lives! People who snare at the idea of Kumbaya, are insecure and tend to be those who'll see life as, what they're getting, instead of what they're giving, with very little to no allowance for sacrifice, even when there bellies are full! Thank You!

What an amazing concept self actualization is. This is what American education reform needs. Why was I not taught at an extremely young age about this concept of self actualization and working towards being my ideal person? It is a life changing concept that I had to discover through years of sadness until I made self actualization my goal during my senior year of high school. I feel as though self actualization is a continuous goal, and I will be on the pursuit for self actualization for the rest of my life - and I am perfectly happy with that.

Nick Miller You are right, self actualization is a process, not an end goal. Want to know why society does not encourage Self-Actualization and non-conformity? Emerson put it eloquently in his essay Self-Reliance: "Society everywhere is in conspiracy against the manhood of every one of its members. Society is a joint-stock company, in which the members agree, for the better securing of his bread to each shareholder, to surrender the liberty and culture of the eater. The virtue in most request is conformity. Self-reliance is its aversion. It loves not realities and creators, but names and customs."

A potential issue is if you grew up as a perfectionist where your best is never enough, so you're always worrying about your flaws even when you are doing great work and part of you knows that it's great but you refuse to allow yourself the benefit of the doubt and you need it to be PERFECT. For those of us that fit this description, self-actualization may be as much about resting in solace with your own imperfection, as it is about achieving your utmost potential. Cuz really, the fact that you exist at all is already an actualization of infinite underlying potential. 👌

Self Actualization is a very powerful and amazing thing. Most people are scared to go that far. One thing you say is that - settling for less than your best will cause self rot. Only thing with that is what if the person dosent know what their best is? How would they know if they are settling? Also, setting goals and accomplishments is a very subjective thing because value systems for each individual are completely different. If my dad thinks having a great job and money is accomplishing goals and accepting challenges what about when one is like an empath or has this amazing special gift to engage and love others as hard as they can and fully embrace that gift they have regardless of challenges and they think that is way more an accomplishment then the job or money. Then one individual puts value on something completely different then the other. So, how can one reconcile what their best is. They may not know if the need is met or not. I personally think Self Actualization is a choice shaping moment that happens - if are aware enough to get that far - and it takes lots of experiences in life and lots of love and pain and people and learning from lots failures and wins that at some point its like - this is me. An existential awakening like in Wicked where Elphaba says she is going to take that leap and defy gravity. In Steely Dan "Deacon Blues" when Fagan says " gonna cross that final line " The awareness took a lot lo to achieve. I feel it is a whole other level of confidence and appreciation and it gives you the capacity to love others even harder. Thank you for talking about it

I've been writing my dissertation about accessibility, inclusion and funding to public arts programmes and institutions. Some of the arguments I've found myself writing about have been in relation to the way art's funding, though small in comparison to other areas of funding, may be considered as eating into the funds for more pressing issues such as health care and social housing, obvious needs for survival. It's been interesting hearing theories that despite the obvious basic physical needs, there is still a necessity for creative outlets in society for individuals to reach their full potential and further society as a whole, and that for societies advancement all must be included and given a right to the language of self expression, which for many couldnt be achieved without creative funding, especially those with intellectual disabilities. Not even sure I'll have a straight forward conclusion, but your content on manslow's theories have been really useful

Wow Leo this is amazing. I listen to your videos while at work and I have been on this journey of personal development for only a few weeks and I really have finally started to understand a lot about myself and my behaviors. I think human development is definitely something that needs to be taught in schools. I am only 20 and I have only just started to think about my life and life in general and what I want to make of it. A lot of the time we get taught to go to school and learn our ABC's and it is in the middle of all of that we, young people especially, start to get lost in the craziness of the world. There are a lot of challenges in life that we don't get taught how to deal with and these are the things that shape and affect our thinking and maturity. I think the world needs to start paying more attention to how we can make us individually stronger humans and only then we can really start changing the world. Moral of the story, I wish I new all of this growing up and knew what to expect of life and how to manage life so I can get the most from it. Luckily it's not too late for me as I am only just about to finish University and kick start my life but if I didn't know this I would have probably just ended up in some office working a 9 to 5 and fulfilling someone else' dreams on the sharp end of the organisation and living a mediocre life because I think that is what I am worth.

Hi Leo, you understand what Stoic described, I have been practicing Stoicism for many years, and after reading Maslow's books, I realized that his concept is based on Stoicism. Just in a language understandable to the average person. It's like he's created a conceptual apparatus for his philosophical system.

What an awesome contribution you've made with these videos... I'm surprised there aren't more views on this one. It just flat out amazes how many people are afraid to leave the bottom 2, more materialistic levels of Maslows. Maybe it has to do with the instant gratification outlets people are hooked into and the incessant self-esteem beating that happens with the advertising tied to those outlets.

A lecture like this, delineating the qualities of a self - actualized person, is very inspiring for me, but not very effective. Inspiration is never enough (though can be necessary). It all comes down to day to day applications - how to unpack and employ it. That is, finding SPECIFIC strategies of recognizing, developing and employing it. Otherwise these qualities remain a generalized list - an abstraction. That being said, these videos are good in the sense that they do "lead the horse to water." It's making the horse drink that requires individual, personalized skill. Skill because for me at least, I am going against ingrained patterns. Those patterns want to live at all costs (they're unbelievably hungry). To undo them, and implement positive change require almost the rigor of a scientist and more importantly perseverance and constancy.

As Maslow said: "What we call “normal” in psychology is really a psychopathology of the average, so undramatic and so widely spread that we don’t even notice it ordinarily”. I think you learn by taking action, as Emerson (anther one of my "heros") said: "There is a time in every man's education when he arrives at the conviction that envy is ignorance; that imitation is suicide; that he must take himself for better, for worse, as his portion; that though the wide universe is full of good, no kernel of nourishing corn can come to him but through his toil bestowed on that plot of ground which is given to him to till. The power which resides in him is new in nature, and none but he knows what that is which he can do, nor does he know until he has tried."

I am a person that loves to thrive, I love to succeed. In a way I am a perfectionist in this habit which I always practice. Unfortunately, I do fail which makes me experience that human side of me which I am not so proud of because there are more faults than greatness, by the look of it through history. So, I decide to depart from that nature into the highest being that I can be. At times, I become stanchly and go back to my human ways. The problem that holds me back is failing and acknowledging that I am failing because it TARNISHES the being who I am. It is imperative for me to overcome that because I can give myself more to humanity and help it get to where it wants to go. My limitations which hold onto me and hold me back, human, does not allow me to fully unleash myself on this earth and show people who or what we are supposed to be like. How would you solve this problem? What would be the best way to do it in such away that you accept that so that you can eventually move over that human obstacle? Honestly, I am an over motivational person but I cannot tap into that resource that will allow me to just overcome that. I try to dig deep inside of me but I just cannot reach that spark that will just trigger the full real being in me that I know I AM. I would appreciate any vides or comments. Thanks.

This was a great video! I'm in grad school right now for my masters in education and I came across this word, "self-actualization" in a book about the learner-centered teaching theory and I'm just so fascinated. I will be buying the book (Towards a Psychology of Being) by Maslow that you recommend. I am really interested in seeing how I can teach these principles to my students since there is a lack of ethics being taught in the public school system today (in the USA). Thanks again for sharing this video, it was very helpful and informative! - Elyse

You have described me perfectly, we also see pictures in our imagination (minds eye) not just of what we can do but how we can do it. We also realise the world around us and how it is manipulated by higher powers (Politicians, Banks, Religion, Corporate and Media). Just be yourself, don't believe others just believe yourself. You Can. If you constantly remind yourself of the money going out of your Bank Account then who are you working for? the Tax Man, the Bank, the Corporate and the Media including social media and the ad telling you that you must have. Don't Do It. They have moved us away from "Need" (as our parents tought us) to "want" as they want us. Don't Do It.

Yeah, I've always been drawn to self-actualize, loooong before I read Maslow's work. It's just that reading his work crystalizes what it is that you're after. I love it! More people need to know that this is available to them. Most people simply don't know. Funny, I was just randomly watching a Maslow video tonight at dinner. Wow! That man was a genius and his ideas are still so little applied. Maslow was simply beautiful and profound. And thanks!
