Self-Bias (Derive your own notes. I had to edit stuff out cause its too much for KZbin! Enjoy!) Worldviews only argue in favor of its view - liberals argue for liberalism - Scientists argue for Scientism - Realists argue for realism - Christians argue in favor of Christ Every worldview argues in favor of itself - All worldview are biased toward their own position - worldviews are close-minded to other views (no fair treatment) Examples: - Ex. Scientists do not fairly consider position of muslim - Ex. Do Muslims fairly consider the position of skepticism or atheism? - Ex. Atheism does not fairly consider the worldview of witchcraft Worldviews make the mistake of not making an effort to understand other worldviews Questions to ask yourself: - How do I discover what is true if I only present skewed arguments to confirm my own beliefs? - Is it possible that I am not inquiring into the nature of reality but to a belief system? All I am doing is playing a persuasion game to convert others to my ideology. In a way, I am only “persuading others” to convince myself and strengthen my attachment to worldview. This is just a huge confirmation bias. Notice this! Nobody notices their self-bias, which is why it exists! Practice: Adopt the position of considering every worldview to find out what is true. I am not after comfort, I am after Truth. Even if Truth contradicts all my beliefs, this is better than deluding myself Biggest obstacles in pursuing Truth is: - Truth requires impartiality and objectivity Problems with impartiality and objectivity: - How do I be impartial? - Who judges whether I am being impartial or objective? - It is not enough to convince myself that I am being impartial because I am the ultimate authority and judge of whether I am being impartial or objective. - Who am I going to ask? Myself? Since my mind is self-biased, it will convince itself that it is impartial. - How can I trust myself? All philosophies and schools of thought believe they are impartial. Ex. Ask a Christian if they are impartial and have considered other worldviews. If I am self-biased already towards a position, then I am not going to be aware of my bias. Question begging is going on with all worldviews People do not question foundations of worldview because it is taken for granted. Worldviews are assumed to be valid. - Ex. Ask a scientist: How do you know science is true? Why are you a scientist and why do you trust in the process? The scientist will give you the history and will give you valid reasons for their belief. But ultimately, he is self-biased. The reason is because: - The scientist is going to use scientific arguments to validate science But this begs the question: - How do we know that the scientific methodology and mechanism will lead us to Truth? This is the same as asking a Christian why they believe in God? They will answer because the bible says so. Why do you believe in the bible? Because God wrote the bible. Is the bible correct? Is God a liar? Did the Devil write the bible? Scientists don’t buy into science because they have proven it is valid. Scientists buy into science and then use logic and scientific reasoning to validate that science is correct. All worldviews are groundless and predicated upon circular reasoning This explains why people delude themselves into belief systems. - They do not have enough awareness to see the question begging nature of their own self-bias Everybody always denies their own bias - Ex. Scientists are interested in executing science, not questioning it. Science is assumed to be true - Why is science assumed to be true? Because students were indoctrinated into by their culture through school system, books, etc. Nothing original is happening. People are just following the program of culture Skeptics are the closest in taking the problem of self-bias seriously Western civilization (philosophy, science, religion, politics, etc.) is built on building up worldviews, NOT breaking them down Self-Bias definition: 1. Mind’s natural tendency to favor it’s own intellectual positions above others 2. when you cannot see how your worldview is question begging 3. All worldviews are question begging 4. Unable to fairly and objectively evaluate your own worldview relate to others 5. Preferential treatment and construct arguments for how my worldview is better than others 6. irrational favoring of ones own worldview Ex. An atheist has double standards it uses to justify atheism. An atheist will not admit that their view is faith-based that is not rooted in evidence and logic I use “proof” to justify my worldview Self-bias is why our justice system has conflict of interest Judges have to be objective and impartial The self is the lens that I view the world. Everything gets distorted by myself We care about an accurate perception of reality = we care about Truth Solutions to Bias: - I have to notice my biases - Relinquish my biases How can I see reality clearly if I need to survive? The mind will justify why the judge was biased to make the judge feel better about corruption. “I was going to rule in their favor anyways.” This is how corruption works. Survival=Corruption=Self-bias Reasons for Denying Self-bias 1. There is no benefit for admitting my self-bias Ex. If a Christian admits that his worldview is bias then that creates doubt and may destroy his worldview = existential crisis. 2. People lack awareness to see circularity at the center of worldview Ex. Scientists genuinely believe that there is no circularity within science 3. Conflating Selfish with Truth Ex. Anything that serves you appears to be True anything that hurts is False! “Truth is supposed to make me feel good!” This is an assumption I will only know after I find the Truth! 4. People don’t see how being biased produces problems. People only look to short-term gains Ex. “What is wrong with questioning science? We have cars, technology, look at what science has given us!” All points of view are selfishly defended against the Truth A powerful defense mechanism denies that it is using defense mechanisms #1 trick to deceiving yourself and lying to others is lying to myself first Delusion=Survival Evidence and proof cannot be trusted because Evidence and proof have been corrupted by Self-bias Evidence and proof can only world if you are not Self-biased Every insane person and sane person has proof and evidence for why they are right What good is proof is we cannot rely on it to get to Truth? It is easier to see Self-bias in others but difficult to see it in ourselves This reveals that I believe in crazy things. What crazy things do I believe? Self-bias related terms 1. selfishness 2. conflict of interest 3. hypocrisy 4. double standards 5. confirmation bias 6. cherry picking 7. justification 8. rationalization 9. partiality 10. paradigm lock 11. devilry 12. intellectual dishonesty 13. survival 14. self-deception Why should i be objective? - many problems are from self-bias Why is self-bias a problem? - it is already self-biased to ask these questions Distorted view of the world will create problems for you and others. Death and suffering is a problem. Closes down my mind, wars, violence, hatred, and judging of others, oppression, enslavement, criminality, murder, retards evolution of society, creates inequality, healthy relationships are impossible with self-bias. Self-bias creates evil. If you don’t care about self-bias then you don’t have a right to complain about evil. Evil is created from self-bias. Self-bias is the mechanics of evil Self-bias precludes the discovery of God and Truth and Love Why are people monsters? People are blind to self-biases “Forgive them father for they not know what they do.” Notice how I don’t give a crap about other peoples problems. Why is it a problem for them but not for me? Ex. Someone losing their child A problem isn’t a problem unless it affects me and this is my self-bias!!! This is my selfishness When I have the same problem then it is a big drama! This is self-bias. Every culture believes it is the best = self-bias They way humans treat death and suffering. They don’t care about the death and suffering of other species. = self-bias Why is there a difference between the death of an ant and a human? Why should there be a difference between a celebrity death and an ants death and ordinary humans death? Why so much drama and idealization? Yet, a bird dies, nobody cares!! Look at it from a 3rd world perspective. The value of life for a bird is no different from a life of a celebrity. This is self-bias Step outside of my own perspective and see it from an aliens perspective Example of Non Self-bias: Socrates’ Death demonstrates his Truthfulness and objectivity - It is irrational to fear death because we don’t know what death is is it possible to be objective? it is possible but not using conventional means and worldviews. How do I know when I am being unbiased? Not really. But it would help to switch the tables. Put myself into another person’s shoes. See the situation from a different perspective and question it. 1. Notice my self-biases 2. Notice justifications 3. Start to stop justifications 4. Drop schemes to manipulate reality 5. Integrity 6. Stop asking whats in it for me 7. attain selflessness 8. cultivate desire for truth regardless of cost 9. study different points of view 10. admit i am self-biased 1. notice the bias, 2. admit it, 3. then let it go!!

I dated a girl who was a fanatical Christian. She was also very smart and open-minded though, and after about a year together she told me that she said to her family she no longer believed in God. This was so shocking for me and everyone who knew her. It came at a steep price too. Her entire foundation for how to function in regard to life's challenges was centered around God, prayer and the structure provided by religion. She went through a dark period for a couple of years struggling with this and had even contemplated suicide. She could see how I lived and my belief system but it just didn't work for her. Eventually she figured it out and would never go back, but just keep in mind the severe consequences of disrupting people's belief systems. This is not a trivial process.

If I understand it correctly, then every preconception is self-bias. Because in order to make a decision in my life, I have to have the basis for that decision, otherwise I can not do it. What is left for me? I do nothing more, than satisfy my basic needs. But only if I assume in advance that survival is an option. To Brutus: He might have been so much of a public servant that he found the sons' attachment a strong disappointment. Thus, his decision could be emotionally motivated. Self-bias? Other picture: He preferred to go to his death to be right. This was his assumption: keeping the right is more important than staying alive. Self-bias? So I think its impossible as a living beeing without the own point of view. All my reasons for doing something have been brocken down. But thank you, I think you are right! - Sorry Google Translation.

I would encourage any Christian wishing to spread the gospel to be able to convey the storyline of the Bible to explain Christianity to a newbie or a Christian who is disillusioned. I particularly appreciated the study on pantheism which I gravitate toward, and I believe a lot of Christians are discouraged from adding that into their worldview to some degree. Pantheism is the Truth about Gods creation. And there were texts that included pantheistic ideologies written as testaments to the Christ in the early days, but did not make it into the canon… Isaiah 5:20 calling good, evil … ??? Something I ponder. Anyone else?

After considering many philosophies for last one year (I know I am still a beginner and there's a lot to come), I too reached at the same point that everything is flawed at some point and we just can't stick to something saying that this one is the perfect one. I read a quote which was saying that "If you don't stand for something, you can fall for anything." But that's just not true, that's just a justification of your belief system which you yourself know will lead you to an ultimate point where it will lose all it's ground. It's just a fear to accept that every man made philosophy is ultimately an assumption.

having self-biased worldviews is necassary. it fuels the evolution of thought. only truth remains. but to find the truth, falsehood is necessary. the multiplicity of worldviews is the substrate on what the truth grows. so don't be biased towards bias. or be, it doesn't matter.

@jaykotz38104 жыл бұрын
The bias of self develops as cognitive agency develops. The stonger the agency, the stronger the self bias. Problems arise because oneness by definition is a closed system. The same system that developed the self bias in perceptions is the same and only system that can overcome the self bias in perceptions. ( WE are not free to act in this system). Even when all evidence suggests that oneness is the most logical belief; the bias of self will reject oneness based on the perception of nothingness. Unless the sence of agency is reduced to almost nothing. Once nothingness is accepted as a possible outcome, the bias of self can begin to lose its influence over every thought in our head. After enough thoughts are freed from the delusion of self we see that nothingness is not the end result. Something else is.

Thank you so much for your amazing content! Discussing about this video, actually explaining some things via WhatsApp with my dad, I just had a major spiritual awakening ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ thanks for the keys and clues 🗝️ My awakening has to do with the ultimate goal in life, which now seems to be compassion, truth, oneness with everything and that the reunification with everything by dying is everything. It's a full circle. Probably sounds stupid to read, but I totally feel it, after a longer journey of Eckhardt Tolle and this here... 🤗 It's like I can finally see the bigger picture after collecting and knowing the puzzle pieces for quite some time 😁😊❤️

What is your definition of truth? “To say of what is that it is not, or of what is not that it is, is false, while to say of what is that it is, and of what is not that it is not, is true”. Aristotle: Metaphysics. For example, assuming that it is the case that snow is white, and that it is not the case that snow is blue, then we speak falsely if we say that snow is not white, or if we say that it is blue. And we speak truly if we say that snow is white, or if we say that snow is not blue. René Descartes: "Cognito ergo sum." Etc. etc. Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Pythagoras, Descartes, Hume, Kant, Nietzsche, etc. etc. To claim that nobody seriously considered the very nature of truth itself or their own biases is factually untrue, if you consider measuring your claims against natural reality as it is presented empirically as being a valid standard for determining the truth of your claims. All metaphysics is the process of asking and attempting to answer exactly this, empirically speaking if the reality that we are presented with and can verify between us as apparently such as it is, is real. Most birds do appear to think that their nest is the best, but that does not mean that they are all equally good or bad nor that one of those birds may not actually be correct in their belief. One only need make one assumption and that is that the natural universe as presented, including one self, is real. From there one need not and may measure all by emiricism, rationality and objectivity. If the assumption is an erroneous one and the natural universe is not real, it is inconsequencial anyway and it does not matter as the natural universe as presented is the only verifiable one anyway. Does God exist beyond nature or SUPER-naturally? Even if God does, it is utterly irrelevant as a God that makes no mark in natural terms that are empirically detectable indeed makes no mark on our existence as presented anyway... and so any SUPERnatural "god" would be of no consequence even if... All nests are most probably not equal...

There are some extreme cases and generalizations that may appeal to certain people and your target audience, very provoking statements sometimes. I don't know if that's on purpose, but overall everyone should be thinking for himself and see where to disagree, because he can be talking to a different type of people, that may need this kind of provocation to get their awareness up.

Tolle is King, his Book A new Earth was groundbreaking.
Interesting this topic has come up because I was recently learning about Chaos Magick which talks about the concept of belief as a tool so it acknowledges that all perspectives are secondary to your essential nature therefore this perspective will serve you a lot better than most perspectives that think they are the best without honestly looking at the drawbacks. On one hand this could actually be more dangerous because then you could more likely start to think it's the best perspective out there just because it understands that beliefs are tools and on a subconscious level you forget about the concept and put Chaos Magick on a pedestal. However I think to grasp Chaos Magick fully you have to be willing to drop it when it no longer makes sense to hold. Based on it's ideas it could become obsolete so seems like a perspective close to what Leo is talking about. If it does not meet the goal to find truth and holds you back it would itself advise you to put it down and pick up a different tool. I invite anyone who sees any problems with this perspective to call them out. All perspectives are limited and I need not defend even this comment.

Objectivity can look like bias to a biased person
@MOISES85205 жыл бұрын
Adam Miceli Could you please go deeper on this? honestly for me it doesn’t make any sense. If something is blue is blue, whether if i look it or if you look it. That’s objectivity for me. Objectivity cannot be relative, otherwise it stops from being something objective. Don’t you think?
@AdamMiceli5 жыл бұрын
@@MOISES8520 Truth is not equivalent or equal to falsehood. If one was being truthful (and less biased) they would value Truth much higher than falsehood. Not being biased does not mean having some kind of neutral position...it means valuing Truth over your own selfish delusions
@MOISES85205 жыл бұрын
@@AdamMiceli I agree with you that truth >< (different) to falsehood. However where i want to point to is that the ultimate Truth is unintelligible by definition. The mind is just a finite part of an infinite bigger picture, thus it cannot grasp the infinite completely. We are all ignorants on an intellectual level (bitter pill to swallow). Truth is existing, changing and evolving at every second that pass, Truth just is, wheter you feel sad, happy, angry, enlightened, deppresed, etc. You just cannot lock Truth into a specific state of consciousness because otherwise you would be dennying the rest of the states. What is your opinion on this?

I think most importantly is to understand that as humans we're always biased in one way or another, I can't imagine it to be any other way. Same as in order to be alive there is always actions towards survival involved. Yet the wiser and more conscious a person becomes, the biases usually become less or more finely grained and the general understanding of being a biased being (at least holding that understanding temporarily) settles in. Just my idea of what Leo was trying to communicate here...
