I think distraction is very well shown by a Bill Hicks comedy sketch video. He made a profound statement about a young man's revelation on LSD and then swiftly proceeded to say, 'and here's Tom with the weather'....not wanting anyone to reflect on the profundity of the statement. A true sign of our times.

I just turned 16 last week. I started watching Leo's videos about a year ago. I went into meditation after doing a lot of research and attempting to understand its pitfalls. I meditated for about a year and saw nothing, absolutely nothing. And I've figured out why. It was partly because I was placing immense pressure on myself. It was also partly because I am in need of medication for reasons I don't wanna get into. I would watch Leo's videos, and I would do the most. I tried hours of Strong determination sitting, I tried meditating for an hour every day after building up to it, I tried concentration work for months, etc. etc. And I saw no results, I actually started to go heavily backwards because of what I have. I am so interested in this work until I recently stopped because things were getting worse, and worse, and worse. I subconsciously thought that "Leo" was the only way to go and that he had all the answers. And thinking this, was the destruction of my life. It was making my condition worse and worse and worse. This is why I stopped, because "Leo" was inadvertently destroying my life. It was through this that I finally realized that Leo does not have all of the answers and what he preaches applies to mostly "normal" people with "normal" problems. I hope to come back to his videos once I get my condition under control and start to apply his wisdom with caution and balance instead of with blindness and ignorance. So actually I am grateful, because Leo has taught me that he and his content is something to consider, not the only way to go. But one thing did shock me though. I was reading through one of Leo's responses to comments and one person asked something along the lines of "How does one self improve if they have a mental illness." Leo's response was simply "Outgrow it." I do not understand how one is to outgrow down syndrome or dementia or even alzheimer's for that matter. I understand that meditation can prevent alzheimers but even then. This was shocking to me. because I was not expecting a response like that. Can someone let me know if i'm missing something? Anyway to conclude, if you'd read this far, i've learned, through Leo, to apply with caution, not with ignorance. I hope that someone else does not fall into the deep hole that I did so if you'd read this, good luck.
@supertigik6 жыл бұрын
what kind of response do you think was proper to such a question as "How does one self improve if they have a mental illness"? I think his response makes sense because i sense a victim mentality from that kind of question. the person with a mental illness cant do anything about the mental illness but continue growing. anyway does the term "mental illness" even make sense to you? every person is unique, every person has a different illness even if he was diagnosed with X. true that it can have conceptual similarities with other people, but limiting yourself by saying "I have a mental illness" is wrong. by the way Leo always preaches to find as much perspectives as possible and stresses that we take his perspective as a perspective, just as another source of information.

And uh know what it has been told by psychologist as well that 99 percent of people suffer from mental disorders or mental health issues....and only 1 percent are "normal" so I don't think so Leo's content is only for those 1 percent....even if uh r suffering from a mental issue you can still work on Self improvement and self esteem stuff......

'Ego' is complete identification with thoughts, why do people get upset, sad, mad, happy? They listen to their minds 100%, no space, no awareness. If you only know yourself as thoughts, you will have no choice. The beginning of my awakening all began from this channel. I remember watching a few video about denying reality, and it made me realize that i do have a choice, i can step out of thoughts and accept what is. After a few months of meditation i woke up while walking to work. I was listening to Rupert Spira, he said 'what is the one thing, that never changes, always present?' Watch your mind, watch your emotions. Pay attention to the attention. Where is your attention? If your attention is not in the 'now', its drifted off into the dream in your mind. Watch your emotions always, leave attention in your body.

For those of you watching this video feeling confused, your confusion is justified. Your individuality and the details of your life are important! There is indeed a YOU that feels happy or excited or confused or sad. That is not an illusion or distraction. Human individuality is real and self-evident, and Leo's "there-is-no-self" talk is illogical and self-contradictory. His view takes up so much beauty out of the world. Think about it. It's the individuality and differences of a person's life that draw us to someone to form a friendship or a romance. We LIKE that we are separate, individual beings different from each other. We like these videos exactly because Leo is different from ourselves! Finally, our individuality is often what makes life worth living: we form a unique story for ourselves that is different from everyone else's. Your challenge and victories you face in life will not be the challenge and victories Leo faces. Your joys will not be his joys, your sorrows will not be his sorrows. This is all catastrophically self-evident, I am shocked I need to even say it. Leo is staring into the mirror too long. He is asking us to take a tool that helps us see the world and then to smash that same tool (our mind) into pieces. He might think this is enlightment. It is not. Ignore this video. The line of thinking he espouses here is a dead end and will not bring fullness or zest into your life. It will make you devalue the facets of your own being.

Great family, great love relationship, good Friends, I have many hobbies and talents, the economy is good. But none of that fulfills me. But I want to know what is like to be awakened in your perspective, because with the life Im living I feel there´s no point to live because nothing really fulfills me, everything feels so shallow. So my questions to you are: 1. What does it feel to wake up? 2. How has your life changed with enlightment? 3. What´s the meaning of your life? 4. Why do you feel life is worth living? 5. How do you see life now? CAN YOU PLEASE ANSWER ME AT LEAST ONE? @dillonphillips3136 жыл бұрын
Leo, this video exhibits too much extremism. Some of these "distractions" are simply facets of life and reality that people misuse and take for granted because they have no control over the mind. It doesn't mean these things are meaningless or unnecessary or should be shunned to attain enlightenment. The problem is how unhealthy the average human mind is, not the fact that these facets of reality exist. It's not as hard as you suggest to attain truth amongst these facets of our reality. There is no reason why the mind shouldn't be able to transcend the pull of the collective ignorance surrounding it. The two reasons for the low percentage of people who strive for higher consciousness today are ignorance and the power of the subconscious mind, not the distractions of the environment and how difficult it is to attain truth within it. It is true that a lot of these distractions are frivolous and would automatically disappear in the wake of a widespread awakening movement, but a lot of these "distractions" are actually very important to this reality we're in. Attempts at making the world a better place and human relationships are not distractions. Enlightenment is a state of mind, a feeling; it's not a destination that transcends this reality. One shouldn't even pursue enlightenment, as if it were some rare and mystical creature, only to be obtained by a select few. It should not be life's end goal. One should only hope to transcend the subconscious and have a healthy mind. Enlightenment is likely attained only in that pursuit, not the pursuit of itself. With the advent of the internet, we now find ourselves in a new age. This power has never been bestowed upon us in history. We can now spread the necessary awareness to lead the masses out of the dark. This awakening movement will inevitably happen, assuming society doesn't collapse before the movement occurs, because it's now possible for it to occur, where it wasn't before. Given enough time, it will happen. With all that being said, people should strive to have a healthy mind by having control over the subconscious, while simultaneously doing the best they can to improve society, not shunning society and questing enlightenment.
@rapisode16 жыл бұрын
What is this awaking of the world you are talking about? This is such nonsense. Furthermore, enlightment is a strenuous process which needs constant attention, anyone that thinks not is naive. Also, being in the now is especially extreme when you have been identified with the mind your whole life. It needs drastic measures. If you let your mind distract you, if thoughts can take you over without you noticing, if you don't know why you are thinking a particular thought because you are too busy being distracted by it, you have literally no control. With control I do not mean clinging to the now, it means resting in the now.

I quote you: "Enlightenment is a state of mind, a feeling" "...people should strive to have a healthy mind by having control over the subconscious, while simultaneously doing the best they can to improve society..." Enlightenment is NOT a feeling because feelings come and go. Enlightenment is a change of perspective that everybody is very familiar with although in another setting. While dreaming you think you are a person and that there are other persons and together they will or should improve society. When you wake up you realize the distinction between I and the rest, between me and the world, was/is an illusion. As it is in any dream. Only when you dream you can be distracted. Whenever you're distracted, you're dreaming.

I got really aware of this distraction thing during last meditation. You have one job; focus on the breath, or with open-eyed meditation; focus on one spot in your visual field. I noticed how I was constantly distracting myself with the most subtle things, like eye twitching to "re-focus" the eyes, subtle thoughts that I was totally aware of but still was somewhat distracted by, like writing down my own meditation proceedure so that I can meditate more effectively in the future (so I think). I remember when I first didn't know anything but the basics of meditation, I had a kundalini like awakening which I interrupted out of terror as I didn't expect such a thing to happen at such an early stage. The lesson I keep running into in this work is to keep it as basic as possible. It's like the old Zen saying: when you chop wood, you chop wood. When you meditate, you meditate. Don't try to co-opt the situation unless you're totally off track.

Leo's bit about the heroin addict and the one who builds the empire is totally accurate. Ideally, these are equivalent distractions. In our life; however, this is not easily not easily noticed due to the complexity of any given situation. For example you may have the heroin addict that lacks any formal education who is also trying to build the empire. Take it from someone who spent their entire twenties down the spiral with a relatively clear and non-criminal frame of mind. The main difference is life expectancy.

I had that experience once i was a muslim , in fact I grew up muslim, i was radical and really devoting to god. I read about how some worshippers of god reached the sweetness of believing or something like that, so i was praying at night when suddenly i lost my awareness for the exterior reality and boom I got literally an electrical shock through my body and i saw a yellow light (i was praying at night and the light was off) i couldn't help but crying deeply, i felt blood rushing to my head and my ears ..ect i felt energetic after that. The problem is my life became miserable after that, probably my crown chakra opened and absorbed too much cosmic energy from the universe that opened all my chakra for a moment, but that made all my trauma and psychological problems getting worst and worst ( getting to the surface so that I solve them) , until i get into meditation and shadow work.

EllesBells. Opiates is the "cousin" of heroin, i've been hospitalized and spent a year and a half on endone and targin, and that shit is the most addictive thing i've done in my life, and i've done a lot of drugs in my younger years. So take it for pain sure when prescribed, but know it will grab you by the balls if you let it. Alcohol is also very disconnecting, but that is far more of a social norm, so telling people that usually puts them in defense mode, i know i did in my 14 years of getting drunk. So it's not so black and white to say "don't take painkillers" when you're in agony. Not pain. Agony.

i've figured out some weeks ago that 'Max' is the ego. At first i thought you have 'Max', 'The Ego' and the observing consciousness. The moment i realised that 'Max' itself is the elusive ego was the moment my mind was blown. But i know this is not enlightenment yet. It might be a great pointer that i'm in the right direction but i still have alot ego related issues to deal with. I only watched the first couple of minutes of this video. But when you pointed it out i was absolutely sure that i'm going the right way. I'm really curious which this all leads to and i bet the rest of the contest in this video will help alot like always! How does your brain interact with mine if there's no you and me? You can't deny the self, it's part of the survival instinct. Humans are self-aware because of an evolutionary side effect of the brain. We have to think in order to survive, it's inevitable. Why do you claim to be sebastian if there is no self?

I know. My point is that in an environment where there are trillions of organisms competing for survival, the self is an artifact of nature for the conservation of species. Without that, an organism can't adapt to the environment and escape the dangers, so he would not survive.

Thanks i'll give it a try. It's not a severe form of dissociation though, it doesn't cause me to have fragmented personality if that's what you mean. It's just very hard to feel my emotions sometimes, especially when I am sad or anxious, I numb myself and I escape from the present moment and from what I'm feeling. It's super annoying because I waste so much time doing it, I wish I could face my emotions more easily and stop running away from them.

great:) I doesn't always has to be a break in your identity, but it sounds you exiled some of your feelings. Start thinking about what you imagine when you drift away? Maybe your mind is telling you to act on those needs you fantasize about but you deprive yourself from them? Maybee you are not giving this emotions permission to unfold in your "real life" because you learned to. I have tried many things but the best yet is a type of conected breathing. You breath so that you feel you breath go into that emotion and than breath out instantly without pause in the same maner without changeing the senasation and then again breath in without pause etc. The emotions can unfold and you can be free

It can be, you're right. It can become a distraction from the real truth behind your uncomfortable emotions. Anything wrongly used can be distraction from the real deal. This is understandable but ultimately we must heed to the truth behind our emotions and suffering to reach it not distract from them.

Throughout my meditation process I found that distractions are like trains of thought. You have to ride the trains to move, well, anywhere. You might be moving in a completely wrong direction, but as long as you're aware, eventually you'll make out a map of the place, and pinpoint the hidden treasure of awakening. Of course, it's easier said than done. The map's probably immense and filled with illusions.
