Guy I used to know who worked security years ago got punched and grabbed up our nightclub once. He was a trained MMA fighter, been going down that path for the professionals for years but he still panicked. It wasn't until he got over the initial shock of being attacked from behind that he remembered he had a pocket knife and managed to stab the guy in the arm a couple of times before we got there let the guy have it. The ability to recover is the 2nd most important thing in self defense if you ask me. The first is not letting yourself get attacked in the first place but we don't always have a choice in that. I've found that training to work through getting hurt is better than thinking about some technique you'll use if something happens. I've never seen anyone really pull off a successful move like they show you in the videos but everyone I know who survived the job learned how to hang in during a fight and push through until they won.

Dr. P. Why I like your channel so much is that you break down key psychological factors. 1. Situational awareness. 2. Suprise-freeze then recover. So damn important in that split second sir. As you indicated Dr. P, you take it them. Urban or rural settings. Your key concepts can applied in both. Keep up the good work.

The whole point of the video seemed to be focused on situational awareness and training yourself to recover from shock/surprise more quickly, not techniques. 30 yrs ago, I was coming out of a bank with then my girlfriend who is my wife now and started walking minding our business when two thugs came from behind us and started punching me about the head. At first I thought it was a prank and soon realized they were attempting to rob me. Perhaps, because I was in the Marines at that time, I momentarily froze then I realized what was happening and immediately my Marine training kicked in. I put my hands with my fists closed to cover my neck and head. I made myself a smaller target by quickly crouching and getting out the way and right away I went into survival mode. I quickly got up and started hitting both guys, I punched, kicked, bit and clawed just like I was taught in the Marines and the two guys seeing that I fought back with such ferocity quickly stopped and ran away. That was 30 yrs ago, and till this day I’m always aware of my surroundings and I don’t let anyone get behind me. Keep up the good work with your videos, I enjoy them much and I always learn something new, you do a fantastic job teaching people myths from reality.

The self defense school I've gone to for 20+ years (which has already saved me from assault twice in my life so far) provides simulated survival lessons after an initial surprise attack. Obviously punching you in the face is not condusive to health and safety in self-defense training as it can lead to serious injuries, instead our school will provide optional simulations outdoors in a park several times a year where you are pepper sprayed (this is to simulate the disorientation, stunning and general impairment a surprise blow would cause) without warning (we stand in a broad circle and there are multiple people with pepper spray, you don't know when / who is going to spray you) - followed immediately by someone trying to grab you, throw you to the ground, drag you off etc. It's obviously still not the same as a real life surprise attack, but it's the next best thing I think that avoids the risk of serious injury you can get from full or even partial contact strikes to the head to stun you in a training environment. It certainly helped me, I think, overcome surprise in the 2 times I've been attacked unexpectedly in my lifetime and survive the attacks with minor injuries.

Your training sounds very good. Well done. As you said it has limitations but it is still leagues better than the average self defence approach.

Thanks for the video #fightboss. I occasionally watch college wrestling matches on KZbin. Sometimes, I see people do a roll to get out from under the down position. If a person is aware of the attack but isn't able to avoid that first swinging punch, could going into a roll of that kind be valuable? In boxing, the old expression was "rolling with the punch." In this case, the roll would include some kind of somersault to be in a different place from where the attacker was expecting. The defender could complete the roll and then be standing a few feet away. I don't know that I could do this with my health isses no matter how much I trained. For someone a little younger and much healthier, could a roll work? I sometimes train with my cane in my hand as I would normally walk and the heavy bag behind me. I then turn into the bag and deliver a strike combination with my cane. I'm not healthy enough to train this move repeatedly. I become too fatigued too quickly. I still like trying to make the move a bit automatic. If the attacker is coming from the side of the arm holding the cane, I try to move my hand down the cane, get both hands on the cane, and drive the crook into the attacker's face. If the attacker is coming from the side of the arm not holding the cane, I try to get both hands on the cane, turn, and drive the tip of the cane into the attacker's abdomen. I rarely look at my phone when I walk. When I do, I tend to trip, fall, and hurt myself without anyone else having to attack me at all.

I've seen lots of MMA fights finished with a rear naked choke submission. How can you defend yourself if the attacker locks his choke arm into his other elbow and prevents you from using the technique you demonstrated in this video? Would head butts, biting, groin strikes/pulls, or running backwards and tripping up the attacker be effective? Could you possibly deploy a weapon like a hand gun or knife if you have them?

The more time you can buy, the more likely help will come, the more likely he’ll/they’ll give up. I know it sounds obvious, but the key to survival is survival. Get strong, good cardio, get on the mats and get dinged up a bit. Loose in a controlled environment with people who don’t want to hurt you.

I just hope that it’s not one of my friends playing a joke on me because I tend to elbow & stab rather than grab the arm around my neck first! I always keep knives at the ready for either hand & my friends generally know this, but if they get super drunk & try to come up on me forgetting that I might not know it’s a prank, then they could possibly get hurt & it’s all bad! Everyone should make sure their friends don’t try doing pranks like that, as grabbing someone around the neck from behind by friends should be forewarned in friendly situations, otherwise one might assume it’s an attack! No one’s safe nowadays!
