Today we speak with self defense expert Icy Mike about how strikers (boxers, kickboxers, etc) can properly defend themselves on the street. Remember any fight with rules is a sport. It's different on the street and I wanted a chance to chat with an expert on the subject.
Be sure to check out Icy Mike's channel for great content. / hard2hurt

Very interesting topic. After years of fighting I starting working as a bouncer and the two biggest tips I have are as follows: 1) People in general are scared of being hit. If the person is willing to genuinely commit there is a very real chance there is someone else who they know will jump into the fight as well. 2) If you can control where people land dealing with three or four people (particularly in a crowd) becomes much easier. Just something as simple as a light push to the side after landing your straight to tangle up their friend as they fall makes a really big difference. I have never heard anyone explain this stuff as well as Mike, probably because of his experience, and I really like how he puts it. All your skills transfer but your impulses/instincts don't.

In Aikido they often train with multiple attackers, and the tactic is to "line them up". If one rushes you, spin them around and throw them into or at the feet of the next guy.

The biggest thing i learned becoming a security guard after years of being a stupid insecure kid who would fight anyone who challenged me: Lots of people just say "im going to beat you up" because theyre used to getting what they want without having to follow through on the threat. People who will actually do violence are less likely to give the warning. There are SOME people who talk about fighting and actually fight, but there are a lot more who do one without the other

I've had over 40 ring fights plus a couple MMA fights and a fight in the karate combat pit. But I've never been in a street fight. Always been able to talk my way out of fighting. But I hope, if needed, my striking skills would hold up and help me defend myself. What do you think? Can strikers defend themselves well on the street?

Yes. Like icymike says commit and go away. I can imagine if you were in a situation. Jab cross. Or cross hook. The problem is when they would do it in surprise. Like most situations can be difused and avoided by not being in the bad places. But when you have no choice and can't sprint away, its also worth noting if they have a weapon, which they normally do; how does one react?

One other thing Icy Mike didn't mention is the fact that striking athletes have learned to take a punch. And even while it matters whether you're expecting it, see it coming, and all that jazz - it's just such a major point in self-defence to not freeze up or fall over when you get punched in the face (for the first time). So that alone gives you a great leg up in self-defence. :-)
@jc-kj8yc
@jc-kj8yc Жыл бұрын
On the one hand, yes. But that can turn to big trouble when you don't watch the hands of the attacker. They might have a bottle, a knife, brassknuckles, a glass, etc. For example, Bas Rutten got his forehead sliced open, because he wanted to take a punch to break the attackers hand and didn't see he was trying to jab him with a whisky glass. So, the ability to take a punch is great to have, but never ever rely on that when you're getting attacked.

@1individeo

yes strikers have learned to take a punch, but it is still in a controlled situation, the striker knows he will get punched on the ring or on a hard sparring session. While in the streets, as Mike said, you are not prepared. You don't know it's coming and you might be also be checking arround see if no one else is with the attacker, or a place to run to. In a competition or in a sparring session you don't have to think about any of that. In street fights people with the same level of high level striking will react differently. Remember: "It is not the size of the dog that matters in a fight. What matters is the size of the fight in the dog."
@jamielondon6436
@jamielondon6436 Жыл бұрын
@@1individeo Yes, I mentioned that. What I am trying to say is, a trained striker (let alone a professional athlete) has a much higher chance of taking a punch to the head - in the street, unexpected, etc. - than someone else. And that's an advantage in self-defence. Just that. Make of it what you will.

I trained Muay Thai few years(couple amateur fights) , little Boxing & then Bjj for 1.5 years & Wrestling few months. Before I trained had many mostly sloppy Street Fights(grew up poor, rough area). After I trained I had only 2 Street Fights…..WEIRDEST things happened! First encounter a Coked up/or Methed up guy was relentless at starting a fight with we at 3am while I was pumping gas after gym. I told him 3 times “I don’t want trouble”, but then he got closer & closer & counted down from 3,2…..I knocked him out before he said 3. Crazy thing was like a Zombie he sprang back up(because of the drugs). I did a 6-7 hit combo(which honestly was sloppy & I surprised myself because in training & sparring I’m quite technical), but after 2nd knockout guy sprang straight back up again. I panicked & thought I either need to grapple him to ground or I’ll end up killing him, chose to grapple. Ugliest takedown I ever did, worst scramble filled with aggression & adrenaline…..but eventually I put in rear naked choke & put him to sleep. I waited for Cops to come & when he came to(while I still had him in weird body triangle & arms around his neck, dude started crying & kept apologizing saying he had huge argument with Girlfriend. I even let him go if he promised to go straight home & not cause anyone problems, I didn’t want him to get locked up….his face was a mess already. Cops came, watched surveillance video & because sound wasn’t working I almost got arrested. 2 days later they chilled with me & saw it wasn’t my fault. 2nd incident I had fight with a Family member who never trained before….but was bigger & stronger than me. Nothing worked, I spent like forever but couldn’t take him down, couldn’t get submission & we kinda nullified each other with striking (both guarded up well, slipped etc. in the end I’ll say in all honesty if was a judge I would’ve lost on points, as I got kinda rag dolled, & my hand was busted up from missed cross where I hit hook on wall(was in tight corridor near office). I mention all this to say nothing is “A Guarantee that you’ll win” but training CAN help prepare u a bit better as opposed to not have trained at all. But we are human with flaws & weaknesses & out in the real world some much more can occur. Never walk around with too much confidence, be humble….or else life will humble you

a really good point this reminds me of is to always look like you have tried to deescalate with body language (hands up in "I don't want trouble" kind of way) or move away from aggressor (if you have the option to do it) so that if it becomes a legal case then cameras or witnesses can easily say you were the victim / you defend yourself. This also helps with well meaning bystanders jumping in from the sidelines, you want everyone to know you are the good guy not the one that needs to be stopped.

Be humble or else life will humble you i love this quote, thank you for sharing your knowledge, generally Street fights are chaotic so like varga say strike and run is the best move, but when that doesn't work you just gotta hit and pray nothing bad happens, but at all cost try to avoid trouble the winner of a fight is the one who didn't fight, this isn't about damage or skill or points it's about your safety , doing enough damage can earn a nice trip to prison, taking enough damage can take you to the er potentially the after life, so better be safe than regretful

I couldn’t believe my luck also with cameras sound being broken on that night. Oh well, truth prevailed in the end

When my husband "lived rough" (he is now a great family man) he fought to survive. He said it was easy to fight the martial arts guys who had just enough training and ring matches to think the were tough. As the opponent was bouncing on their toes and gaging distance my hubby would flick is cigarette in the guys face, spit in his eyes or toss a bottle or drink in his face. That was followed up immediately with a punch. No hesitation. If the fight went to the ground he would eye gouge, reach for the crotch and squeeze/twist as hard as he could. Any object in hand reach was a potential weapon. When life got really tough he would never leave his house on his own, always had a buddy to watch his back. I think people like me who box in the gym or who have had some amateur matches have no clue the intensity and brutality of survival fighting. I am so thankful he lived through those years to be the man he is today. Many of the people he knew living that lifestyle never got the chance to grow old.

I always go to the mindset that Chris Haueter put out when talking about self defense. "Think Street Train Sport"... understanding the difference in environment and situations is key. I'm prior law enforcement and a MMA Coach myself... I come from traditional martial arts, Self defense/street oriented martial arts, and of course Sport fighting... to train sport and really roll, or spar, or strike, and to put cardio to the test is the best way to train yourself in general. But never forget the differences in a non-sport setting/situation... where weapons and multiple people can come into play. Just go out and train and put in that hard work... just keep in mind the realms in which you find yourselves in.

Sports are designed to be fair. The space we fight in is symmetrical and smooth. We have agreed to fight one-on-one. We both know when the fight is going to start and we both know when it is going to end. We both have the same goals, the same conditions for victory. We both have the same agreed limitations on move set. We have both agreed to a certain fight at a certain weight. We are both allowed to wear whatever we like to fight in. Neither of us is allowed to use objects. Neither of us is compelled to defend an object or a third-party. etc etc. The thing that distinguishes self-defense is the ambiguity (we may not even know what the criteria is) and the asymmetry (the criteria is not purposefully constructed to be equal to both parties). Exactly like Mike said -- the tools are the generally the same, but the mindset is different. That tactical decision-making and the tactical calm required are different.

Yes. There are some adjustments to be made (can't rely on blocking with gloves, need to mind when kicking is a bad idea due to clothing/footing/etc.), but at the very least, being used to gauging distance and defending yourself effectively from incoming strikes is very helpful.

Everything Mike said is right. I'm no expert but I've caught ass beatings and gotten out of ass beatings. You full commit and you don't worry about "hurting" yourself with something like a broken hand. The only thing I would add is that low kicks can work on untrained people, purely because they have a tendency to drop their hands. A guy started a fight with me when I was younger and I threw a quick and light round kick to his front leg. This gave me the opening I needed to throw a clean cross and put him out. The main key is trying to be first. If you know you can't talk your way out, put them out before you get shot, stabbed, jumped, etc

If you're trap on a corner and can't run while ur opponent has a knife.. a front/push kick to the groin is a must imo. But the best thing u can do is avoid chaotic places like going to a bar.. because you don't know if someone suddenly pulled out a knife or a gun while confronting you.. worst case scenario is ur already drunk.

I think another thing for trained strikers that is important is to look over the law concerning self defence in your country. If you land in prison because you turned the guy into tomato soup, that is not exactly increasing your safety. Know what the legal bases are.

I work as a bouncer and train Muay Thai for 6 7 years, am 192 cm and 112 114 kg , size matters in self-defense. Recently a lad wanted to jump on me on the door, without even realizing it I was ready to tip him. Nothing happened, but 100% I would have made him fly. Training is training and it does build reflexes. An untrained person is just food for a trained individual.

The biggest benefit to the defender is having the element of surprise. Someone who's hyped up and attacking has a predator mentality and often don't count on you fighting back. I think a lot of self defense techniques actually only work because of the element of surprise. Obviously the attacker could use the element of surprise too. The other advantage is that you don't have to chase the other guy around a ring/cage/mats. As the attacker, they come to you. That tricky guy in the gym who runs away and counters isn't a good example of an attacker on the street.

Went from 0-100 at the weekend. Fight was over within seconds. Wasn't the cleanest punch I've ever thrown but it knocked the guy back and he was stunned. All over before it began because the guy didn't want anymore smoke. Luckily didn't damage my hand or truly hurt the other guy. Obviously the punch clocked him but it was on the cheek I think and there was no knockout where he could have fell and smashed his head. Didn't want to fight but the situation called for it.

The point about broken hands is great, I think the reason palm strikes, karate chops, hammerfist was taught so much was that most people could not afford breaking their hand, since most people made a living with their hands, breaking it meant not being able to provide for their family.. nowadays medical care is cheap and good and most people can still do their job ad a desk worker with a broken hand
@unmessable12
@unmessable12 Жыл бұрын
Older martial arts developed many ways to avoid breaking the hands in a fight also because in addition to needing those for a living, today we have access to better medical care to heal those hands, which people didn’t back then. And not only would you need a hand to make a living, if you were working as a caravan guard or military then you need that sword/gun hand, and militaries today even emphasize this.

self defense for kickboxers, in America. A CCW. I know a lot of black belts, high level kickboxers, fighters etc, who have people pick fights with them because people think they're always up to fight, or have something to prove. If you're a skill kickboxer/etc you can easily become skilled in using a pistol for self defense.

To fight on the street you need to do separate drills. Usually the reflex is to punch someone in the face but it is a lot better to slap them with the base of the palm if it is a head strike and punches to the gut and ribs. If you avoid punching in the head you are also avoiding cuts from the teeth of the person you are striking and like this you diminish the chance of nasty infections on your hands.

These two could make for great collaboration! Their skill sets as both Martial Arts coaches and KZbinrs overlap, but are really distinct. Moreover, the cultural differences allow for a wide audience and a healthy amount of tension. Gabriel Vargara is just *so Canadian*, and Icey Mike is *so American*. For my attention/views the fact that the polite, soft spoken Canuck, could destroy the brash American(barring weapons, especially guns)is just too perfect-- I say this as a brash American. A bonus episode where their wives, who they've both incorporated in their channels, talk and give their honest opinions about their KZbining martial artist husband's lifestyles could be incredible and broaden their channels appeal if the ladies are funny 😁

One thing I remember from some other self-defence and bareknuckle videos Icy Mike has done is that punches to the body are less likely to injure your hand if you have good technique. Power shots to the ribs can get the job done, especially the liver or solar plexus. Shane also mentioned in the multiple-attackers video that heavy soccer kicks below the knee can collect both of another person’s legs and sit them down if they stand narrow enough. Kicking higher is something to do if you’re confident in your high kicks, but still be aware of the risks. Any kicks aimed to the groin have to be *fast*, because we all know it’s a reflex for any guy to try and protect their nuts. Otherwise, don’t underestimate pushing moves like a shove-teep or a straight punch into a post that you ram with. Since so many fights start from a grab / clinch, if you want to get out of the fight you’ll want to dissuade them and create distance on your own terms. Of course, that requires knowing how to move in the clinch at all, so working on both getting in and out will be important first.

It might be interesting to take your art out into the mountains or in a shallow river and see how the body and mind have to adapt to the surroundings as most arts train on a level place like a ring or matted area. How much does survival vs a mentality of winning change anything, such as technique on ground that's icy like Mike or on a slope or whatever. If you could do that for my enjoyment that would be appreciated.

I was always told. It doesn't matter how well trained you are or in what. If somebody pulls a knife on you in a street fight. You run. You tuck your pride up there with your balls and you run until there is no longer a threat. :) I like the idea of being able to control the threat though. I just value my blood staying on the inside for as long as possible even more. :)

The adrenaline gets amped up much more in a ‘real-life’ confrontation. There’s an awful lot more potential for extremely serious damage, legal ramifications, and quite possibly death. I don’t believe it’s the same experience as a ring bout at all...and at Gabriel’s level, he has a huge say on the potential outcome, regardless of how scary or skilled the opponent is. There’s not the same sense of control when you’re quite in the dark about the potentiality for harm and/or life-changing and irreversible consequences. I do know what I’m on about sometimes you know 🤷‍♂️

Can't remember where I heard this (maybe on Tony Jeffries channel??), but boxers do tend to break their hands when bare knuckling. They have become so efficient at hitting hard with wraps under gloves that support the bones of the hands, so when they punch without gloves, they fracture bones. I think its the ring/pinky. So, they need to focus punching with their bigger knuckles and watch wrist position. Pauli M. broke his hand against Artem in BKFC...thats one example.
@GabrielVargaOfficial

I believe that. I've always avoided conflict on the streets and one major reason has been not wanting to break my hand. Maybe I'll remember to not defend myself punching the head and just go for a body shot 👌
@leftvassis

palm strikes are still very effective and dont run the risk of breaking your hand in a street fight. Also, the reason alot of boxers break their hand is because gloves and wrist wraps allow you to hit faster and harder with angles and technique that would be "punished" with bare knuckle by breaking your hand or wrist. You basically allow some sloppy technique because it gives more power/speed.

I done Kickboxing for 12 years, done Krav for 2 and now do Muay Thai. Most useful stuff in a real world violence situation. (That would work) at a MUCH higher percentage rate. Is in Muay Thai. Weapons based drills have to be done thousands and thousands of times. Front Kick to groin. Or crash and counters with punches, Elbows, knees, etc. Maximum violence for 3 - 5 seconds. Then run! Where weapons are involved, unless you're ultra confident and trained so much that you whole heartedly believe in your muscle memory under real fight stress and spiked Adrenaline. Don't be a hero!
