In today's episode I talk about the practical use of a kickboxing or muay thai low kick in street self defense. We speak about whether this a technique I would consider using if I needed to defend myself and what I see the possible weaknesses being.
And I'd love to hear from you in the comments. What do you think about low kicks on the street?
Have you utilized it before?
If you enjoyed the talk about muay thai/kickboxing in street fighting and want more episodes talking about the clinch, elbows, etc in self defense please give the video a like and I will get them made 🙏

they cry about you using kicks elbows or whatever, even if they jump you with a friend from behind, even used up kicks from the ground or from against furniture, hurt them and sent them flying with those. Its kind of funny how you premeditate to attack someone, from behind and stuff, and then all of a sudden this becomes a sanctioned boxing match when they are getting the worse of it. used low kicks and oblique kicks too.

My opinion is that in a street fight the most important thing is to be able to react to the situation appropriately. Everything you learned could be applied, or nothing. That's why in street fights what you need most is adaptability. In the end, the thing that will win you the fight might just be that big ugly overhand, xD.

I did this once in a self-defense situation back in the 90s when I was practicing Uechi-Ryu. One solid roundhouse kick to the thigh. Dude's leg gave out and I literally walked away. The beauty of it was he didn't have any long term injuries, just a sore leg for a couple of days, and we actually became great friends later on.

I've never seen anyone grab a leg in a street fight or even defend a kick. Seems like a solid tactic to me, if you practice low kicks, nobody is going to capitalize on you throwing it as long as you don't throw it more than one or a few times.

I've used low kicks to great success in a street fight once. When I was around 14 was talking to a girl online, she told me that she was single but she was actually had a boyfriend. He found out that her and I were talking and wanted to fight. I had been training mma for about 6 months at that time and was a bit of a hot head so I took him up on it. We were set to meet up at a mutual friends house the next day. I didn't know the guy I was supposed to be fighting so I asked my buddy who's house we were meeting at about him. My buddy said that he was 16 and around my same weight but taller and he had the long arms. I started getting a little worried he was 2 years old then me and bigger, I had some training but I was starting to doubt that it was enough. The next day I met up at my buddies house and I guess the word had gotten out about the fight. There was a group of 10-15 kids there waiting at the baseball field that was right behind my buddies house. I knew a few of the kids that were there but the majority were strangers so I was worried that I was going to get jumped. I talked to my buddy and he assured me that nobody would jump in, he knew most of them. We waited for awhile and finally the kid I was supposed to fight pulled up in his car with the girl we were fighting over. He took off running at me and throwing wild punches and got me in a "bully head lock." I picked him up and slammed him hard on the back of his head. I was ready to used some of the ground skills that I practiced but all the kids watching were yelling at us to stand up. We got up and he rushed forward, I landed 2 or 3 leg kicks and was surprised at how damaging they were. He was starting to slow down a lot. He was pressuring forward so much before but now he could hardly move. I threw one more low kick as hard as I could and that was it. He crumbled, the kid couldn't even stand up. The fight was over and I was shocked at how damaging the leg kicks were. In mma we always sparred with shin guards on so I knew the low kicks hurt but I didn't realize how debilitating they could be to somebody who's legs weren't conditioned. I saw the kid a few years later at a house party. We made up and we were talking about the fight. He told me that he had never felt pain like that before and that it felt like his leg got hit with a steel pipe. He said that he couldn't walk right for 3 or 4 days and that he had a deep bone bruise for over a week. I guess the morale of the story is to believe in your training and don't be intimidated. I wasn't intending on writing a novel today but thank you to anyone that made it this far. 😅😂

It's important to not throw a kick in self defense situations if you're still learning how to throw a kick. I would only throw a kick if you've been training at it for a long time where throwing a low kick has become muscle memory for you. However I think it can work, because in a street fight, people tend to leave their hands high to cover their face (which is a normal instinct)

One thing to remember is that you don’t rise to the occasion. You fall to the level of your training. If you think you’d try to run away from a fight, train to run. Short being the key word. Although I spar regularly, I have to continually remind myself that a street fight with no gloves and or shin guards (in a sterile environment) is very different than fighting some crazed lunatic who might be drunk or high and feels no pain and is willing to smash his bare knuckles into your face. I like the fact that Gabriel first talks about de escalation, distance control and vision in a street fight where you are more than likely to encounter an opponent…. and his friends. Thank you Gabriel for this real life scenario breakdown.

It’s a lot harder to do when you actually have someone running in your face throwing a haymaker every seconds, they don’t throw 1 haymaker in slow motion, they bulrush while throwing a many as they can

@@bernardelmargi9733 I don't really agree with you, low kicks are also great defensively against punches, assuming you start at a safe distance and you do not have a large reach disadvantage. The trick is you have to throw the kick as soon as the guy starts to move. This also gives you the advantage that the guy will be leaning towards you so your kick will have double power. If you have a decent lowkick and you use your shin, you can completely bust a thigh with a single kick, but even if he has enough strength to continue, just repeat the same move, as soon as he tries to move towards you stop his thigh with your shin. It's the same thing that you get taught in muay thai against boxers and it's very effective, so effective that even when light sparring and if you're stopping your kicks, due to the fact that the guy is trying to move towards you, it becomes very quickly very painful for him.

@@bogdanmoisuc I know what your saying but you should probably kick if your both squared off as he could just run through and knock you over while your on one foot, I’ve only done it once but jab and straight, jab straight and (just keep doing that) does beat haymaker from what I’ve seen as they hit the target first and they can hit him since he has no guard and his arms are filling around

The reason why I have just become your subscriber is because you accept that a street fight is different from the athletic fight. Yes! I unintentionally was in some street fights of which the result did make me feel bad. I have changed my routine to the athletic workout instead of the self-defense, since then; but still very happy to watch any VDO relating to self defense and street fight. 😊

I'm a super chill guy anyways but just wanted to say that street fighting scares me because in my country you never know, after beating a guy or putting him in his place, if he's going to get a gun or more people just to pay you back. No-uh don't want that. Hell I don't even like hanging around at bars too often so i guess I'm pretty safe 😅

I'm a Jiu-jitsu practioner and have been for 32 years (I'm 39) I fought in the ring and on the streets but having grown up in a very dangerous area, a knives and guns were prevalent. If your 1 on 1 and up against someone, putting serious force into the back/side of someones knee will usually do what you need to slow them down. Long, open range with the option of elbows is great. Maintaining your posture and balance is super important. Don't kick so hard you turn away from anyone. Kick steadfast and direct, but keep your guard up. Alao, if Vargas can beat Lerdsila with low kicks, Low kicks should become a part of every game plan. Massive love and respect!

Its been years since i last trained and even longer since my last street fight, so im just a keyboard warrior now. The more common low kick we trained with was more of a front kick to the knee or shin (boots improving effect on street), its faster and doesnt sacrafice as much balance. I agree the turning kick would inflict more 1 time damage if used in the right spot but i still think I'd perfer the front kick, especially around multiple threats

As someone that has been in a good amount of street fights and bar/club fights, i can say leg kicks are very nice. In my experience using closed fist punching peoples skull with no gloves, hurts ALOT even broke a finger once fighting and being stupid, after a few fights i learned from my mistakes and started using kicks, knees, elbows and hammer fist. Because the day after you feel so much better, and you can still use your hands that btw are important for most work... But if I'm close like in his face, i like elbows, if I'm in good kicking distance i will start with a low kick just behind the knee, this is great because very often they give up, because they lost their mobility also in case you have to run, his leg is fucked and he won't chase you as well. If someone rushes me (football tackle) i like to do a scissor knee to the face, it's quick and good for ending fights early, i also use psychological warfare, lying and telling them im a fighter it helps ALOT, BTW I'm not a "douche" i just grew up in a rough area where fighting was how you survived and defend yourself, and drunk people fight all the time, and also many fights is me helping a friend in a group fight in clubs and bars, if one of my friends is in a fight i will be the first person there, i have fought people way bigger than me, even met up on football fields for arranged fist fights in the hood all this is between ages 17-24, i only hit people when they start something, i actually hate hurting people. But when I'm drunk and people mess with my friends or family i can't hold back, IDC if he built like Mike Tyson or what ever I'm winning or losing, it's a principal and honor thing

It's very realistic even one v more than one, as it's legally pretty safe but very effective at both cutting the opposition's steam and showing them what they're are in for. But, as you said, the focus should be on keeping balance and a safe distance.

I've been doing martial arts for 40 years (and I am just getting started) -- I will be 72 in February 2024. I wholeheartedly agree that low kicks can work in the street, but all kinds of kicks, not just the round kick. Also, it appears your target is the thigh muscle, but a knee kick (if it warrants it) is very good as well. I liked your awareness of what may happen, i.e. the opponent tries an upper body strike or they try to take you down -- good idea to keep situational awareness in mind. BTW, because I kept up with my training, my kicks (all of them) are still very quick and powerful -- I will never stop training.

I think leg kicks can be a great tool but it's important for relative neophiles not to overestimate them. Yes, they can end a confrontation very quickly without running the risk of breaking your hand on another dude's head (or seriously hurting him, putting you in legal trouble in some places). But you need to understand proper distance and footwork and timing to know how and when to throw. Too many people who don't train just want a silver bullet. Doesn't work that way, you need to learn fundementals behind the leg kick.
