Hello Master Sung. I have a question about hapkido kicks. Do you need to bend the knee when doing kicks in hapkido? It would be great if you can do more videos about various kicks like dwit chagi or yop chagi. In fact, some kicks in hapkido are different from taekwondo, so exploring the difference should be interesting for many people. Thank you for your work, it looks amazing!

Thank you for your kind comment sir. Yes, Hapkido kicks are very similar to Taekwondo. I believe closer to ITF. But we have twisting kicks and sitting down kicks where normal TKD schools don't do. Back kick, side kick, turning kicks are more less same as TKD. Thank you.

We share many kicks with TKD, but we also have kicks that are used set up, or enhance takedowns, throws, and sweeps.

As much as I admire 1970's Hapkido being practiced, I think most schools in the US, and even in Korea, have changed the Hapkido first learned from their Korean instructors. Some have changed the techniques into excellent law enforcement skills. There are absolutely some excellent foundational skills to be learned in old-school Hapkido, but some of these raw, unaccessorized techniques require an opponent with no will to fight back. These finger techniques are a good example. They will be difficult to apply to someone bigger than you, and most assailants will be bigger than you in the streets. Also, the attacker will have a completely free hand that you will need to contend with when you try to apply the technique. In real life, this will quickly become a punch defense situation. Better to use an underrated strike from the outset: a hard slap to the face, at which point, you get a better idea of the creepster's intentions.

Excellent video, it clearly shows it didn't work for the lady. A video for defense against a slap on the buttocks would have been more useful, as it is the way it usually happens in real life. (It has happened to one of my sisters and a few female friends, the level of distress it caused them was huge.)
