People are inclined to change once the pain of staying the same is greater than the pain of changing. This pain could be the result of a broken relationship, a close call to a severe health problem, or just an overall feeling of being sick and tired of your current circumstances. A major setback can also force someone to take a look at their life and make an effort to change it. This setback could be the result of a job loss, failing grades at school, or anything of that magnitude.
Self-improvement is the process of taking a look at your current way of living and making a conscious effort to change it. The truth is that the majority of people are creatures of habit. Many of us are stuck in our ways and would rather avoid change. It is more comfortable to keep doing things the way we have always done them, and faced with the choice to make a change, many of us would choose to ignore the better option and stick to our old ways.
