I listened to this in several parts. One part on Christmas Eve while my husband and I drove to a family party and my inner critic was off the charts. I asked my husband if we could play some of this - even though it wasn’t very “festive.” He said yes and there was one specific part where Lisa said the antidote to the inner critic was developing a stronger ego. This was life changing. Personification of the critic was also enlightening. Honestly this was hands down the most life changing podcast episode I’ve come across. Merry Christmas!

Gabor Mate essentially says that most (all?) addictive behaviors is a result of a person trying to anesthetize themselves due to too much pain, usually from childhood experiences. I believe he uses "compassionate inquiry" to help people become aware of what they are doing and why.

These videos are my favorites! Thank you for the show . for a while I did not quite understand the benefit of having the witch the trickster the nemesis and demon in our shadow as functions (Bebe’s model) and how they are used in therapy. Now I get the idea that it’s similar to the gestalt technique where you actually personify the critical voice inside and understand that they have a life of their own... in this way they will not have the power as much as when you think that this voice is a part of you. The internal psyche is an internal world ...

Much here to digest. "Self acceptance includes embracing the inner idiot". Thank you, Deb. Also I do see some intersection w/ the covert Narcissist and the Scapegoat.

Having stood up to what I perceived to be a toxic super ego (viciously critical and pessimistic) I had a very vivid disturbing dream of being pursued by a monstrous woman through an old and labarinthian house. Was this my negative mother complex or anima not my superego who was seeking revenge for my rebellion ? The advice of ' showing a friendly face' to our complex came back to haunt me quite literally.

So glad you’re doing this topic. My mom and I both dwell on past regrets (each our own), and it gets us down. I just didn’t have words to pinpoint what is going on. Thanks

WHAT!?!! It's many times highly likely that a child will understand that both or the sole parent is a non parent, but a dementor, a pseudo parent, and the child will have to use their own wise instinct, senses and intelligence to handle the situation in the same way that Hansel and Gretel were left out to die by their "parents" and THEN encountered a witch who would eat them! Many, many children have wise instinct intact and know how to learn to or handle this situation. Then go on the hunt for safe others and find them in teachers or community members or otherwise relatives that are safe. Not all children are naive.

26:30 I exist in this life this exact way and I want so badly to stop and actually live a life worth waking up each day for! My brain/body doesn't agree and it has diluted my life's experiences thus far. I also want to add that Duke Nukem needs to dumb it down a bit haha

I'm so identifying with this Episode, it's embarrassing. Grateful to have yoga asana practice as a skillful means of discharging. And feeling compassion for that ice cream I ate in the middle of the night, now sitting around my mid-section!

Can you make a podcast on growing up gay? After reading Alan Downs’ book The Velvet Rage, I realised the distinct experience and childhood being gay gives a person. It would be nice if you could address this.

gestalt technique growing koifish dream sadistic superego the witch the beauty and the beast - the beast must be transformed called by the subconscious an "it is so" attitude to the accuser shamans and power animals converting voices of the subconscious from attackers to allies by not resisting, confronting, negotiating gospel passage of turning the other cheek - dream of the chorus of accusers - responding "Yes, I did that" - The Aralim, whose confrontation is to show you the meaning of your suffering; saying that yes, my shadow did that visited by voices - we DO have a choice whether to confront or meet up with the voice depression and self-loathing and throwing yourself into the maw embrace your inner idiot - the village idiot exercise
