It has automatic copyrights when you write it. Formal copyright protection will be submitted before you publish.

Double check on the copyrights - i believe it's fine but I never want to be responsible for giving someone an answer that has changed or isn't accurate. B&N Press if they are a self-publishing service would not be the one on the copyright it would be you. If they own the rights they would be filing for copyrights.

Do I copyright before I have the book self published. The copyright office say to include a physical copy of the book. I haven’t printed the book yet. LCCN says the same thing. Don’t you want the copyright & LCCN included on a page before printing? Confused!!

The LCCN is after the book is done but not published. Copyright office is within 6 months of publication. The copyright info isn't necessarily from filing at the copyright office. The verbiage on the copyright page seems pretty standard in books. If I use some of the same statements will I get flagged for Plagiarism? If I use the same copyright page in all my books will there be a problem?

So professional yet funny; how do you do it... Thank you for the video. Question about the CIP Service; I'll be simultaneously releasing/publishing nine (9) children books. The cip ($90) service x9 books will be a total of $810 bucks. Is there any way I can just do the CIP myself. I literally just got finished watching the training video form the Library of Congress cip service job. I think I know what to write, couldn't I just do it myself? Am I missing something... THANKS!

You probably could do it yourself ... you also don't necessarily need it for children's books. I get a TON of kids books from the library and they often don't have them. It helps but I met a lot of librarians this year that said it is not a deal breaker for them anymore (I think it used to be more important as was library binding).

Probably. These kinds of nuanced questions are really best for a trademark and copyright attorney. The big thing to remember is everything you write is protected the minute you write it. The filing is how you would be able to defend it in the court in US.

Hi Julie. Amazing video. Great insights. I have a question regarding titling my book. I want to take a line from a poem and use it as the title for my book. Is it legally allowed? It was written in 1931 by an american poet. I have no idea about the copyright issue regarding this. What is your recommendation? I'd love to have your feedback.

Once something enters public domain then it can be possible to use something like that but that would have required the poet to have died before that was published so that is not an option at this time. Do you have the right to use them in a commercial use? That is an important distinction for images. Something that is ok to use on social media on a blog is often not ok to use in a commercial use like a book.

But, even if I have a license to use an image, how it doesn't infringe on any copyright laws?? Can I still write a page with the copyright symbol? I just want to makes things right, but I don't have the money to hire an illustrator.

Hi great video, my book is with the illustrator, and she’s going to add the text now.. she will also formatt it .... In the UK we can write our own copyright © and add it to the book, and we can register it if we want to... however my question is do I give the copyright to the illustrator to add to the second page of the book? Not at all ... many people in the self-publishing industry call it 'indie publishing' vs self-publishing. It's because you are doing it 'independent' of the gatekeepers and old school ways. I usually just call it self-publishing but I like indie-publishing. It makes us sound so cool. :)
