Жыл бұрын

Want to learn to map or tune your own Subaru Impreza, Forester or Legacy? The essential first step before doing any tuning is learning how and why to datalog the information from the ecu. I take you through the why, how and what to data log field by field.
This is part 1.. Part 2 will be soon and in a live session go through datalogs live to reveal the lessons learnt.

I have a USDM 02 wrx and the tactrix module, and chose an old acer 5610 as a laptop, which seems to be a good choice. Would the Bosch LSU 4.9 wideband be sufficient? I don't think I need the gauge, just the sensor. I recently just purchased a brand new denso for around the same price, so it'll be a good backup. my mods list, in order: -killerb pickup tube -grimmspeed uppipe -upgr8 high flow oem filter -nvidia bellmouth -mishi tmic -gfb bpv -gsp (mac) ebcs (currently running in 2 port mode) -04 fxt gearbox -01 forester s auto locking 4.44 After the downpipe the power went bye bye, then swapped over to a diaphragm from an 06 fxt iirc. I was looking for a milder spring to keep the boost down and a buddy hooked me up with this and it barely jumps over 7 or 8. Even when it does hit that, there's nothing up there. Basically it's like driving a 2.5rs. However, the fuel consumption is pretty unpredictable and not good, and last fall I experienced a leak in the T circuit. At first I thought to myself "what happened? why is it fixed now wtf? it's running great now where did all this power come from!!!!! Well it wasn't running great at all. I was careful with it, but when I hit fuel cut on the interstate after being suspicious of the massive increase of boost I started researching it. I was easy on it, I kept doing test pulls while monitoring my boost gauge trying to figure out where it was building and why etc... then after reseaching I found the leak, fixed it, and was back to slow again. This is where I started learning about wastegate duty cycle, so I purchased a gsp mbcs, deleted the oem lines & pill and slapped it in. The result of this was pretty accurate control over boost levels, but absolutely no control over the map. By using this mbc I began to have a clear idea of why you cannot use an mbc, because the ECU has to control the wastegate according to the map, and by bypassing the ecu here, the wastegate cannot open according to the map. There's absolutely zero control over it. The people in the thread were basically saying to be strategic about boost building, but after learning this, I just don't see how it would be possible to use a manual boost controller unless the wgdc is also binary, like on or off reflected in the fuel map. The map would need to be tuned for it either way it seems, as I experienced a lot of breakage through the range. I also replaced the spark plugs testing this out. I think I have enough evidence to tell me that there's really no safe way to "mod it now then tune it later". Basically, if you put anything fuel/air related on this car it seems that it must be tuned for it, no questions asked. That being said thanks for this series. I've got my wrx, my tactix, and my laptop, with ecuflash and romraider installed and I'm ready to get cracking. I wonder if I need to keep the resistor (for the deleted uppipe 02 sensor) connected or if I can just tune it out?
@racedynamix
@racedynamix 3 ай бұрын
Wow.. I think that has nailed the longest comment award 😁😁 🙏 Ok.. I will try and answer the points. - wideband. You need a controller for it e that a gauge or something else that will power it and output the signal back to the ecu or your laptop for datalogging. The gauges are useful for many reasons though. Wastegate control through the std map assumes a std car so any changes to hardware and it will react differently, build boost differently and reach different boost levels. When individuals fit manual boost controllers this bypasses any control it is sometimes out of necessity but mostly out of doing tuning on a budget where they can't afford to get the ecu tuned or worse yet if the tuner doesn't know what to do. The std ecu can control boost perfectly but it needs to be set right. It isn't binary, there are full 3 d tables setting out the strategies and each of those have many related tables and maps that set how it works. Fueling and ignition are again related to the load through the engine and this is calculated by airflow.. The maf sensor so any leaks will have a big impact be that a leak pre turbo causing it to run lean or post turbo causing it to run rich.. Or both and it is all over the place! Now you have the tactrix, software and will get the wideband working too.. Make some det cans too - do not tune without them! You have control to set the ecu up to exactly what your car is, what you want and what it needs. Egt sensor can be switched off with the taxtrix and doesn't need a resistor. Any questions then consider joining my academy on here where much more info, guidance and help can be given 👍

Hi, thanks for bringing us this wealth of expertise!! I'm Raven and I own an MY02 USDM WRX and am about to start my tuning journey. I've got my tactrix, and I've got my laptop, and now I need my wideband. I've found the Bosch LSU 4.9 Wideband sensor on ebay for $129 shipped new, but it's got a 6-pin connector and after a quick search for adapter the only thing I found was this iwire kit which you can get with or without the gauge. Thanks for your work, on your Forester STi (I am asking as I have a 2006 JDM SG5 Cross Sport) did you have to use one of the additional plug adapters the Tactrix has come with it for the different year WRX's?
@racedynamix
@racedynamix 10 ай бұрын
On the forester sti it is a 32 bit ecu so just needs test mode connectors. The cross sport is a weird one.. Particularly the auto as it has a real hybrid set up and can only be done via Ecutek software.. There isn't a std communication protocol for it in ecu flash or ecuedit. The manual version can be done normally although they are very rare cars.

@racedynamix
@racedynamix Жыл бұрын
I haven't tried that item but anything that is interrupting signals like this to pretend it is going to speed up communications really can't be. It will be translating actual pedal position to a fictional value to fool the ecu into requesting more throttle opening. The safety control on that relationship is super important to road safety.. It wouldn t be something that I would want to do or recommend. Just get the ecu properly Tuned 👍
