Very interesting perspective. The thing here though is that a right of passage is for a short period of time. Whereas Martial Arts training is for several years and for some of us, a lifetime of training. I would suggest that Martial Arts represent life’s challenges rather than only a right of passage. I learned how much I am capable of through martial arts and that permeated throughout my life to face any challenge, head high and confident.

I practice my martial art, mma and kali eskrima forever in my life, like i practice the guitar and the different musical instruments, everyday, there is always something new to Learn and to improve and to make perfect, its like a painting, it gets more beautiful everyday. Its also good because it can spread its positivity to the rest of my family.

In simple terms; I would say a primary principle of the martial arts is self discipline, which carries over to all areas of life.

It's a Vietnamese Vovinam variant of full-contact martial art in which you practice self-defense, like any other martial art, a few punches, a lot of kicks, leg takedowns, and for the more advenced, flip kicks and/or takedowns. Also you practice how to use long and short staves, swords, knives and nun chucks (so far are all i've seen) and how to defend against someone using them against you.

Thank you! I have been enjoying your videos on various subjects. I began the martial arts in college because I wanted to be able to defend myself. It didn't take that long to learn the fundamentals of that. However, what I discovered, like in that old book Jonathan Livingston Seagull, was that the martial arts for me became a journey from the physical to the mental and then the spiritual. Now, over 40 years later, I still train, and I can honestly say I've used my training every day in my life. Best!

my journey into the martal arts started when i was 10 maybe 11 yo. anyway these kids oneday waited for me to get a ride to school the one kid kicks my leg and i fall to the ground the other kid kicks me in the butt. and said get to class dummy. and when i say kids i mean there were a group of them at least 4 to 5. my mom saw the ordeal happen. the next day after another abusive day in school. my dad brings me to my first karate class. i stay and study for around 2 weeks. then i fall dormant for years then when i turned 19 yo. i sign up for a chinese kenpo class i work hard dont miss not one class. 4 years later i got my 1st dan black belt. then i quit again for a sec and this military man moves in down stairs when i lived in utah... he starts teaching me bits and pieces of aikido. me and him studied aikido for around 3 months. and he buys this dvd set from vunak called rapid assault tactics. or rat for short. me and him start learning that we finished up that in 3 months. and here it is years later and im 39 yo and next month i start 6 month plan 140 per month for seibukan jujutsu. and ill work on my black belt in that and when they have nothing left to teach me. then i will move to ether krav maga. or bjj.

I think that's a big element, but I also think Stefan overplayed it. People do jj because it is a system that you can integrate very positively in your life. It's physical and up close, you focus on breathing and keeping the mind calm, you strike when there is weakness.

I think one thing that can be said is that we need two births to become who we really are. One, our organic birth giving us our bodies, but two, the second one, is that which gives us our will to live, (in order) to grow, (in order) to overpower. This does not come from completely me, though. It comes from Dionysus/Bacchus who was also called the "dithyrambos". (sententiaeantiquae.com/2016/03/09/a-ridiculous-etymology-for-dithyramb/) Also, I think, I might be mistaken, but the same god was also thought to be torn apart by the titans when he was a baby, after his first birth, but Zeus found its heart (like his will to live) and grew it in his thigh, until he was born a man-god. So I think the message here is to rip yourself a new one until you grow up.

I kind of disagree with the self defense with a gun in cc drawing a gun and bringing it to bare under attack is a whole fight in its self and hand to hand helps with that but other then that i absolutely agree

Practicing a Martial Arts which does incorporate basic strikes,. kicks,. grappling and defending/offending against the armed object is the must have skill. Also it trains your cardiovascular, strength gaining and even that adaptations and flexability to the next level. For example, You can practice wing chung as long as you can practice from their breakdowns of defending against the different fighters, maybe a traditional okinawan karate (i.e. Daido Juku [form of MMA karate], Kyokushin [form of full contact karate w/o head contact and grappling], Ashihara [a form of full contact karate practices basic strikes and kicks, also grappling in prone position] , Goju Ryu [a real okinawan karate practiced to be a self defense but not practiced as a form of martial art] , also Kobudo [ancient form of karate]) are full contact and does practice basic defensive and offensive movement within one martial arts. Muay Thai is a form of Thailand self defense system formed in the boxing match and also does grappling (if you want to go through the harsh training in really hot summer). Taekwondo can be good but fighting is all about being deadly and able to defend against dirty techniques. So as the no contact karate (i.e. shotokan karate [primary karate for training mentally in defensive matter.] Uechi ryu, and shorin ryu). But whatever the martial art you're going to take take in the consideration of practicing.... 1) basic strikes and kicks 2) basic takedowns and grappling techniques 3) a defense and offensive attack from a armed combat IF you can balance these 3 essential skills in martial art training. You'll soon start realize that you have learnt a form of self defense and a mental and physical condition to "keep on training and learn from life experiences and personal observations."

I think the real reason to train martial arts is to be able to fight with martial arts. Thats it. And I think its a good video but most people take this martial arts is something different as fighting only as an excuse to be not good enough to fight with their martial art. "Oh you lost the xyz fight?" "Yeah you know kung fu is much more about finding youself, becoming a better person...So its no problem when kung fu doesnt work in a fight" Bullshit its about fighting.
@shonunezekiel4 жыл бұрын
But doesnt the 'kung fu' part of your username translate literally into english as 'hard work', or 'achievement attained through hard work', or something like that? ... I like your straightforward approach though: 'it is what it is'... personally I think there is normally more than one reason to do something, and the primary motivation may change from time to time.

i use to have people back in the day asking me to train them in the arts have studied though the years and i had to tell them no that it was for self protection. and i did not have a teaching permit. or license to teach. i mean yes i use to teach again use to teach people about 5 to 7 years ago. untill one of my students broke this kids nose. after that i stopped teaching i will only train family and members of my family. but have desided that i will keep training i will just not train anyone else other then like i said family only. just better that way i figure.

if you're doing it for self defense only, learn boxing. 2 times a week for 6 months and you'll do fine against the average person on the street. don't think you're going to take on a bunch of people. if you can avoid it don't fight at all and walk away. these days you could end up in court paying someones medical bill even if they start getting physical first.

I really want to train in martial arts, but i have been training in boxing for 2 years and i want to learn krav maga, but my friend has an attempted murder charge because he defended himself. I'll say this quick. 3 guys tried to come through his door to rob him the 3 guys had guns and knives (sawn off shotguns and stuff) my friend had to shoot at the guys, but he accidentally shot a guy in the chest and the dude was in critical condition. And what I might have is an assault charge, because I had an aggression attack (I have ADHD and Asperger's Syndrome) at my school I heard that I beat him up with a pool cue. I don't remember anything of the situation. I got locked up for 6-7 hours and now a year later I might get an assault charge and after that I can't learn martial arts anymore. Like in 2012 I was kicked out of my soccer team because the group I was in didn't have enough people. I really hate myself now I wanna hang myself, because I might not even get to learn how to defend myself in a life or death situation. :( WHY ME!?
