Best defense i've seen against rear grab. Watched another vid preaching using ankle to lock the attacker's shins; that doesnt work as effective/harder to pull off. This technique smoother to execute and more effective, with lower chance of getting slammed! Thanks for sharing

This works. I saw this technique on a news segment. My buddy who was a wrestler in h.s. came from behind and tried to what I assume, supplex me. I weight train and have no self defense training except for playground fist fights as a kid and what I was taught in Marine Corps bootcamp. He never saw it coming. I think it bruised his ego.

I like how the idea of the attacker having weapons was mentioned. I was going to ask about it but no need to! My thoughts if they have weapons is to stomp or otherwise quickly break one or both wrists as this is a life or death situation. If I were to run instead, I would run in a criss cross fashion to make it hard for the person to aim and fire easily in the case of a gun or even the rare case of a knife, throwing knife, or projectile weapon being used. I would rather consider the unlikely scenarios than assume this person will just lie there after an initial damaging move or two.

I don't know about anybody else, but most bear hugs I've seen go around the arms, not the waist, although I suppose both are considered bear hugs. If you are grabbed around the arms, I don't see how you're going to reach down and grab a leg. Maybe do another video showing a defense to a bear hug around the arms.

@marceldouwstra58475 жыл бұрын
Not really since you can't use your arms effectively. But it is a lot easier to create space with your arms in that situation so you can for instance turn into your opponent with double underhooks or something else.
@StephanKesting5 жыл бұрын
No it doesn’t. You need your arms to be free.
@Udgrasil135 жыл бұрын
@@StephanKesting I suspected. But in my experience, most Bear Hugs are executed with your arms trapped. I think it is one of the hardest grips to escape from. Especially if your opponent is bigger and stronger than you. Still a good technique...if your arms are free =) Keep up the great work.

Nice work Stephan, love your work, especially the first move but the second? I'm not saying that I know better than you but I think you may have a touch of BJJ bias, all the attacker has to do to neutralise your roll is to release his own grip around your waist, methinks? We've drilled it before and (if its a street conflict) you're left very vulnerable to stomps if x-ray doesn't roll with you when he releases the 'hug' ?

You have an excellent understanding of fighting as well as self-defense but you also show a great affinity towards your style. In our self defense school we just practice whatever works best - under as much realistic terms as possible, and I can honestly say I would never allow you to take me down from this particular position. Grab my leg maybe, yet hardly possible but forcing me to let go while I drag you all over the place... I don't believe it. There are easier solutions that work better even if your opponent is much bigger than you.

How would you deal with an opponent whose intend is immediately lifting you up (and potentially throwing you) after grabbing you with the rear bear hug (under or over the arms, respectively)?
@complexblackness5 жыл бұрын
Wrap your leg (right/right or left/left), around theirs. You must do it immediately. I did it instinctively when I was 13. Still don't know how I knew to do that. It worked, might be other defenses out there. Yet I know the leg wrapping is a common one.

nice tech but its hard to do against someone ragdolling you for a takedown. i believe your opponent isnt resisting so much as hes just standing there- most guys might lift slam or trip take down i.e. kevin randelman lifted and slammed fedor on his head. i prefer faras zahabi technique on this occasion- strong base i.e. squat down, lean forward, leg hook and grip break (kimura type of lock) and turn the corner to face your enemy. but i guess this is a good option if that fails. i guess u can combine it to keep opponent guessing.

Worth mentioning that the knee bar is illegal in IBJJF rules tournaments up to and including the purple belts (if I'm not mistaken).
@biggjuicy19825 жыл бұрын
Thats why the IBJJF wont last. Eventually it'll be just as bad as Karate point sparring, or Olympic Taekwondo. If you take away everything that is effective, and dangerous from a martial art, what does that leave you with? A safe, point based sport. Thats just how it works. Thats how its always worked.

BJJ is a religion. Never choose to go the ground or grapple in the street. That's how you get stabbed or ganged up on. Get mobile, stay mobile, stay on your feet.

Daniel Skipp did you watch the whole video Daniel? I address this issue in the second half
@Momsspaghetti7775 жыл бұрын
Daniel Skipp so you’d sooner bet on trading hits with someone holding a knife rather than controlling their knife hand and working to break it. I see.
@danielskipp15 жыл бұрын
No, Mom’s Spaghetti. Assumptions not valid. If I knew I was actually being attacked by a knife at close range I might attempt to control the knife arm by grappling it... but there are many factors. Hitting very rapidly, efficiently and frequently at very close range and having high tactile sensitivity to evade and control their body are musts. BJJ only trains sensitivity to a degree and is actually anti-evasion and has no clue about fast striking combined with control... it just tries to grab. At range I prefer kicking a knifer. Anyway your assumption is a non sequitur. Choosing to grapple is how you get stabbed. It limits mobility and doesn't always go to plan. It takes too long to be an optimal selfdefence strategy. A second or two is all it takes for surprising injections to mess you up. It refer you to the standard BJJ "sucker punch defence" [double bicep control to hip throw] for a perfect example of bad joke "street self defence". Yeah. it can work, sometimes... but the holes are huge. People love BJJ because UFC, it is fun, makes them feel good on the mat and they don't know any better. I have a friend who easily smashes BJJ "tough guys" and edged weapon attackers with traditional kung fu blocks. It's how you train.

@danielskipp15 жыл бұрын
@@StephanKesting yes, I did and no, you didn't. That you have faith in this technique based on your mat experience against lone unarmed opponents says it all. BJJ guys seem to think they are psychic and will always know in advance if there are going to weapons or multiple attackers. Even if you were psychic (despite Bjj not training the internal) what Bjj would you use? Even archBSer Rener Gracie admits Bjj does not work vs multiple opponents. As much as 40% of street attacks in the UK BTW. Saying like Rener that defense against multiples is "impossible" is just lame and untrue.
