I think the property they went to was with the homeowner. It's still gross and grifty, but the situation in Altadena at the time wasn't as grave as it was further west. They did NOT get past the Palisades Fire checkpoints on PCH and elsewhere because these are true big dog neighborhoods and the emergency and infrastructure teams were (are) still struggling to deal with looters, unstable buildings, power restoration, &c. Even residents aren't being allowed in.

This is not how the working Royals behave. Working Royals do not go into a disaster area as it is happening. They stay away while first responders are working. They give families private time to deal with and cope with their situation with professionals. The Royals respond after a respectable amount of time to thank first responders and give support to the victims. They may get media attention but the focus is on others and on charities and services people can give support to.

Even the Royals do not issue pompous "statements" stating the obvious. Any official statements are left to the "officials" themselves. The Royals will make a statement giving their heartfelt sympathy and desire for the situation to be resolved. They might, depending on what has happened, get involved in urging businesses to rally round and do something practical, but they never spout about it. My father was a firefighter (in Colorado) and I had it drilled into me that you do not go to an emergency site unless you have some legitimate skills and reasons to be there. If they really wanted to be there, they could have started training months ago to be a Red Cross volunteer.

Yes, you keep as far away as possible unless you have a legitimate reason to be there. Responders don’t need to worry about trauma tourists being underfoot while doing dangerous and physically demanding work. Also hugging- people are in shock, their emotions are raw and their minds overwhelmed with fears. Touching someone is an intimate act, let alone hugging them. You have no idea of that persons history, by hugging someone you are invading their personal space, the personal space of someone who may be hanging on by a fingernail. Was Meghan prepared (let alone qualified) to deal with the reactions she could have elicited when she hugged someone in this situation? No, no she wasn’t.

Back in 1966 Aberfan in wales suffered a terrible disaster when slag heaps crushed a primary school killing the children. The Queen did not rush to the town to tour the terrible scenes and was criticised heavily with newspapers reporting she didn't care about them. In truth she was heartbroken and made the decision not to go because she knew her presence would detract from the necessary work being done and she would just be in the way. She felt so guilty for not going, even though she was right not too, that she visited every year until was she unable too anymore.

Archewell had the opportunity to quietly donate and make a simple statement, and no... they decided to "visit" for what looked like a photo op with the governor (also not exactly popular in California). We live in Southern California and we heard about friends and acquaintances in Altadena or Hastings Ranch who lost their homes--if that was me and I saw celebrities walking through what was left of MY home I would be really angry. Archewell donations have rapidly declined. Only 5% of their funds have to be applied to charities.
