They're not really disagreeing with each other. It's just that uthermal thinks of ways he can lose to lower mmr players, while harstems thinks of how a higher mmr player would beat it. Harstem specifically says that INITIALLY a high stalker count is important. A good example was Gerald just stomping uthermal twice in a row with stalkers by just executing a tight build.

I think it's more that he doesn't understand how Elo translates into probability. Assuming that SC2 uses a pretty vanilla Elo system, a 64% WR in TvP indicates that his TvP is 100 Elo higher than his actual rating. This means that there is a 500 Elo disparity between him and uthermal, which translates into a 95% expected winrate for uthermal.

Just to be clear mathematically about the 64%. Assuming every person is roughly on the MMR he is supposed to be (improving takes long periods of time and may hit soft-caps), your overall win-ratio must be 50%. So if your TvP is 64%, it means the other two (TvZ and TvT) must be 86% in total, somehow distributed (43% if even). The only place where this ratio is advantageous is on the pro-level (GM upwards), where your actual performance is somewhat obfuscated and open-ended, especially in tournaments. Let's say you win 70% of TvT, you may also win 70% of TvZ and TvP, because you are simply better than other pros.

I've mass-cyclone meme'd way before uthermal did the series. I can tell from experience the way thermal lance colossus hard-counters cyclone mine is absolutely disgusting. The only way to outplay with cyclones in that case is getting lucky with multipronging.

He accidentally built a colossus, but funnily enough, colossus would be the hard counter to this. It's counter intuitive, but as long as you have things to protect them, the cyclones can never reach. I have a 5k friend that only plays cyclone every single game and i can tell you from experience that's how you counter cyclones only (widow mines here don't really change the equation)

@@oldoddjobs well yeah it's a bit more subtle but it's stalker colossus. Once you get 4 or more colossus they're forced to go into tanks, which just takes up money and supply and map control. the cyclone player wants to be on the map constantly pressuring. The reason is because cyclones aren't great defensively, and the cyclone player usually has less echo due to giving some up in the early game (cyclones off of a normal opener is bad , which is why uthermal went double gas). So once they are forced to go tanks you get map control back and then the game is great for you. You can go to skytoss or just take many bases and his army just kinda sucks (because it's cyclone and mech is bad in PvT in general).

Pheonixes can kinda just cancel the lock on. It pretty much is the same strength of a stalker but cost twice as much. Its normally better to just get turrets and save the production for something else.

What Marc has (if you also watch his channel, like me) is an amazing game sense and incredible ability to adapt and toss in some random flair and just try little things to throw people off with some mindgames when possible. He does this all while narrating and explaining his thought process as well which I personally find incredible. Sometimes the builds he does pay off and end up in a very weird and entertaining match, sometimes he straight up loses due to the perfect counter and good scouting. Like Harstem notes, uThermal is a former pro player who has played against allot of good players who sometimes outmatch him completely as well, that sort of experience really matters in the end.

Well, I must admit, would I have played Protoss (but sadly too much sodium in my veins, so Terran up the night it is :D ) , I would also not have the correct response to this cyclone/mines comp. I kinda understand the Colossi move. Colossi have good range, and if cyclones are not microed "nearly individually", they tend to "line up " pretty decently to catch the thermal lance and die. AND they clear mines patch at range easily. But at Masters level you should expect good micro. Still I "understand" Emil's logic here. Cyclones are paper tigers. Big DPS but crappy armor for mech. I remember the time before tankiness got nerfed on these bad boys (2018 If my memory serves well), early pushes with them were a blast, as you didn't even need a tech lab to get them. I have 65% win rate in TvP and average 8 score in IELTS, but every 3800 Protoss player I played with thus far rolled over me easily xD LOL what a funny guy this game most of all is about who presses buttons faster and click mouse more precisely thus its nigh impossible to win against somebody who is just much faster than you... (of course strategic decision matters that's why my win rate in TvT is only ~40%... I haven't figured out how to play it on my level yet...). PS. Jazz is great! xD

Also, whenever you play a game, you can't pierce into the future and see what opponent is going to do with certainty, you have to work with the information you have while you are playing the game and so you don't really rush out colossi vs someone who is going for mech.

Harstem said mass stalkers first because they're already a counter to cyclones. He also said colossi with only a few stalkers is bad against cyclones, so mass stalkers first then colossi. It's like you're suggesting what Harstem said not to do. This is just a 9 minutes and a half game. Can't make 3-4 colossi AND the army needed to back them up. Sure, you might not listen to me. But Harstem himself said better to have mass stalkers than colossi with few stalkers at 10:07.

The first mistake I saw was the location of the first pylon... This against terrans is an unacceptable mistake... After watching the video, I also saw exactly what economic damage this brought to him... And it has a serious impact on the development of the game! Indeed, in such situations, I choose not to have my pylon part of the wall! In the sense when I know that a terran is on a spoke game, and not another race!
