This video shows how I release our quail from the brooder to the pen now that they are old enough and I describe the signs I look for when deciding the best time to do it. I have also uploaded another recent video on incubating quail eggs and moving the hatched chicks to the brooder so if you are interested to see that video here it is: • Hatching Quail Eggs & ... Overall, I personally prefer keeping quail in a pen environment as I find the birds are happier and there are many other advantages some of which I cover in this video. Enjoy :)

Have you considered assembling the leg band loops in advance so you can just put the loop over a foot and then tighten down to the size you want?

I'm using zip ties also. I find that if you make them into a ring first (then you can keep them on a pinky finger), they are easier to get on the quail.

I’ve been watching a lot of videos on poultry and your set up is really ‘happy’ looking, I like it. Also this playlist is my Quail bible. I’m hopefully getting mine in a month or so, probably going to hatch out as have ordered an incubator. I’d love to see how they sleep 🧐 no one has done a video of their birds at night. Idea for a video, stick a camera in the duck, chicken and quail sleeping areas, and one outside and let’s see what they get up to 🤓

I am finishing up a hatch. Over half of them hatched which surprised me. I think I'm going to keep each hatching of chicks separate so i can easily remember who is older and who is not. I'm thinking i will be hatching 2 or 3 times a year and will cull my oldest ones for meat. That way i keep a good fertility rate up in my flock.

Hi Mark. Rooks took my last 3 female quail from the cage, despite me putting 1cm mess all around the cages. I'm heart broken. Fortunately I'd just ordered an incubator and had about a dozen eggs in reserve. So now I'm waiting to see if any will hatch. Should I keep them indoors if I get any chicks?, I mean at the same age as these in the video. I'm scared to loose more to rooks. I'm in the UK. I could build an aviary. What mesh would you recommend? I'm thinking of 6ft high, 6ft long and 3ft wide. I'm hoping to keep 2 males and 8 females. How do I keep foxes abd rats out?

I'm starting to learn about raising quail so I do appreciate your videos! I like the way your birds have room to get around and scratch and taking dust baths, etc.. Your birds are fully feathered out and remain mostly calm when you go into the enclosure. Seems like the better way to go if a person has the room?

Hi. Nice video. I am thinking of starting my quial hatching soon. I have some questions. I was wondering at what temperature should I keep my quials in once they are in their brooder. And how many eggs do you think will fit in my 10 egg chicken incubator since quail eggs are smaller. And what do i need for their brooding box. Thankyou and keep up the good work.

Where i live it wouldn't be good to keep them on the ground. We get too many flooding rains and are full to the brim with small snakes. So it will be better for me to keep them in cages. But i agree they are a ground bird that needs and loves to scratch and dust bathe. So keep them happy and put them in a large sand bath. And i can really make them happy by putting in some meal worms in the sand box

@Selfsufficientme
@Selfsufficientme 7 жыл бұрын
Yes sure! My position is "homedad" I've looked after my two boys full time since 2008 whilst my wife has pursued her professional career. I decided to make use of our small property to grow food as a way to eat healthier and save money on buying groceries. It was challenging at first to establish a productive food garden, but after a few years I found growing our own food to be pretty easy and very productive. In a way, I'm working at home for myself and family by producing food instead of earning a wage working for someone else. Nothing is for free LOL

Hi Mark LTNS my quail are doing great, I have about 55 now. Moving to a new farm and building pens now for chickens and quail. For now the quail are on wire but soon will have a large run.I'm thinking of putting 1/4 inch wire on bottom even though it will be on the ground, but to try to keep snakes and rodents out and still mulch on top to encourage bugs and allow them to scratch. I do a little different in that I sell most my chicks. I began culling as well keeping only birds that have reached mature weight of above 9 oz at 10 weeks old trying to increase the size on my breeding stock and live up to that 10 oz Texas A&M are suppose to do. Do you have wire on the bottom of your run?
@Selfsufficientme
@Selfsufficientme 7 жыл бұрын
Hi, great to hear from you and well done on your quail keeping. Firstly, I'm glad you are wanting to build a quail run on the ground because it really is a humane way to keep them plus I find it easier to do than in raised cages anyway. To answer you question, no I don't have wire on the floor of the run but I have dug the mesh walls down about a foot around the whole pen to act as a barrier to predators and to stop rodents tunnelling under. I'm going to answer your question and others in a video I'm preparing today (hopefully will release within the next 24 hrs). Cheers :)

What looks like merely play on a micro scale can give you valuable knowledge and experience of how to be self sufficient on a massive scale.. Do you remember that child like feeling of excitement and wonder you had with life when you were too young to have an awareness of money, personal gain, women or responsibility? From that position you engaged with reality in a totally different way to the way you have become accustomed to today through the conditioning of societal pressures, In that state of mind your brain is like a sponge, you learnt without even trying purely because life was fun.. This approach is called targeted education,,,,, Lots of bricks of knowledge that fit together to build a house of advanced intelligence. QUAILS ARE PROPER CUTE!!! lmfao,,,,🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣..My precious ideasses!!! lol
