S5 owner. The camera is a banging little beast. Due to accidentally shooting a session in JPEG I discovered that the jpegs retain so much information that I was able to manipulate them almost to the same degree as the RAWs without the quality falling apart. Just like the m43 G9 the S5 is another extremely powerful underdog of a camera for video & stills. It was a tough decision to give up my G9 but ultimately I'm pleased I sold it to step up to the S5.... Caveat... If ONLY they didn't skimp on the EVF I would own 2 S5s by now... Sheesh, the EVF on the G9 was GLORIOUS! LOL!!

Thanks for the real world use info!! Yes - the EVF is only equal to the A7iii - which is not good enough these days. It’s not bad - but it should be better. The next version of the S5 might be the one for me - but I might pull the trigger now, who knows?? I almost bought that G9 about 50 times

I bought the S5 for stills photography after 8 years of Sony APS-C use. Better ergos, menu, flipout screen, better built and better low light. I dont do video or vlogging, but even as a stills camera, this is very good and within most folks' budget. Pair it with the bulletproof 24-105 F4 or Sigma 45mm F2.8 (which I got for free from Panasonic - this was a promotion they were doing right after the camera release), you just can't go wrong.

As for dynamic range, for photography, I don't think there is any difference. The S5, S1, and S1H are using the same sensor as the a7III. Both have Raw (GH5S incoming).The only thing I hate about the S5 is the teeny tiny micro HDMI. The HDMI port alone wants to make me go GH5S. But the f/1.8 primes by Lumix makes the S series a very attractive camera. Relatively affordable primes that are optically excellent, same size for easy lens swaps on a rig. The price would be very similar. This is for stills photography, mainly night photography...so autofocus is really not an issue since I'm mainly use manual focus. @MarkBennettCameraCrisis3 жыл бұрын
That is a tough call, but since you are portrait, I would lean Sony - the lens selection is so much better, plus autofocus works reliably in video. The S5 will take great photos, but the lens selection is currently limited - however, it is a powerhouse for video. If you were a serious video shooter looking to do documentaries with anamorphic lenses or cinema lenses where you’ll be manually focusing, etc, that’s when I would do Panasonic. Now, the A7iv will likely be amazing, but there might not be a reason to wait. The A7iii is used by many serious photographers, so that’s a viable option, and the A7Rii is currently a steal of a camera giving you 42 megapixels at $1200 usd. I will personally be waiting for the A7iv to be announced before I do anything else, but that could be months away still.

I ended up jumping from the Panasonic S1 to Sony a7S III. I wanted that Sony autofocus, plus I wanted to go all E-mount on my lenses, since I have a Sony FX6 as my main video production camera. Ultimately I see Sony as being the best option for going into the future. Panasonic has a lot of "if only they had good autofocus... if only they had a more mature lens selection" and their autofocus might improve one day, and their lens selection might mature... but they might not. Today, Sony has great autofocus and a wide selection of lenses. So for me, the safe bet and best use of my money was to sell my Panasonic gear and go all in with Sony and so far I haven't regretted it. As you mentioned, the Sony a7IV will probably blow everything away when it is finally announced and released as well!
@MarkBennettCameraCrisis3 жыл бұрын
I feel like Sony is the way to go as well. Build up some good glass and don’t look back. I just need a couple of tweaks from them - shutter angle helps me out a lot in comedy club filming, and 10-bit and better ergonomics in cameras other than the a7s3.p would be helpful. Oh, and better stabilization in the more entry level cameras. But very soon I’ll likely be all Sony too. Then comes the obsessive lens buying. Ha!!

The S5 has very similar specs to the A74 and beats it in some ways, like it's versatility with anamorphic lenses and 6K raw externally. But the A74 of course has rock solid autofocus and 11 more megapixels for photos and a wider lens selections. I think the S5 is a much better value for the camera, but the Sony has a lot of affordable lenses from Sigma and Tamron - so that's to be factored in. If I was a filmmaker who didn't rely on autofocus (like I do for KZbin) - the S5 is the way to go.
