Did you know that many Rolex AD's sell used watches and will buy your Rolex back from you? It is rarely a good idea to sell to the AD because they'll give you less than you might otherwise get. But there is one reason when you actually SHOULD sell right back to the Rolex AD.

Good advice Marc. I just recently got my first Rolex ( OP 41 green ) and I threw out a few other models I told them I’d be interested in ( any ss submariner , air king , milgauss , ss Daytona , or another colored OP 41 ) I am not expecting a call any time soon but wanted to throw it all out there I figured the more options the better my chances of getting a call soon and I like all those watches. I don’t have the cash right now but like you said by the time they call again I probably will or I’ll just figure it out then but the only way way the list is to get on it in the first place.

I don’t think an AD will ever go for it. They’re going to think more about the market price and milk him for more sales, the Sub is worth half as much.

at the end of the day.. without spending 1 cent.. he will end up with a 20k watch instead of a 12k watch. So if you really like the Batman over the submariner, it’s a great move, for both you and the AD

Definitely but if you can keep both it’s even better but one thing is people need to remember just because on paper it’s a more expensive watch or the watch community as a collective thinks it’s a better watch that doesn’t mean it will make you happier. Unless you truly like it more than you could make a mistake with this trade

Short answer no: with a but. Ferrari and other high end car manufacturers stipulate that if you don’t sell it back to the dealer, you’re blacklisted. People aren’t up in arms about that, why about this? If you’re truly in it for the love and not the money, you should be absolutely fine with recouping the money you put in or a small loss.

What about trading a vintage two tone OP date I've had for 8 years and paid $1,800 for? Considering how much it's appreciated over the years I'm thinking of trading it in to get a new Tudor or a sizable chunk knocked off a Rolex OP

How would the dealer ever know that a watch he sold ended up in the gray market and then associate that same watch back to buyer? I feel like that is a 1 in million chance.

People online certainly make it seem like it happens all the time. Apparently some people will call up Rolex to run the number to make sure it’s real or bring the watch in to get the bracelet sized and they will run the number and call the other ad and report it. It’s probably a know within Rolex to kee a tight lodb

I would do it - but only if the BLNR was there on the day - ie a direct exchange. So keep the Sub, enjoy it until the AD comes up with the goods. Best of luck.

It would be a tough call. Not sure what I would do. If I really needed the money I would be wary of giving the AD the impression that I was hard up for cash, especially if the financial situation is temporary and I want to continue being considered a good client.

A good A.D. will understand a moment of financial need. They are business people and have been through similar at some point. The thing is though, if you are selling out of financial desperation then you need the most for your watch and you’re probably not going to worry about blowing up the a D relationship. But I think it’s pretty unlikely someone would buy a watch and then within only one year have a financial crisis and need to convert it back to money.

I’m thinking about doing this with my AD, 41mm sub date which was at retail for a Cermit but I would have to add some cash to it. What would be the “fair” dollar amount I should give with trade in?

Remember your AD gave you free money when they sold you that Submariner date. I say that because you could sell it at a premium. Now you want them to give you even more free money with a Cermit. That means you’re going to have to sell that first watch for substantially less to the AD then you would to anyone else… But it’s well worth it.

You should not be giving any money at all with your trade-in. Your current Sub is worth more than the Cermit list price. If the dealer accepts, it's a win-win situation.

To me Rolex ADs are invisible. I ignore their stores and have trained myself to accept the gray market as the true marketplace.

@@marcgoldbergdogtrainer If you get a chance, I recommend reviewing the new Omega Speedmaster "Man on the Moon" 2021. I bought the Sapphire sandwich, after going to many Rolex AD in hopes of purchasing a new OP 41 in a black or blue dial with no success. This is their best one yet, mine runs +1 second a day and is the most comfortable watch I have ever worn. The daily manual winding of the watch was something to get use to and the clasp is my only complaint but otherwise I couldn't be happier and is a keeper in my collection.
