Selling My Sony ZV-1 Was a Mistake... BUT the DJI OSMO POCKET 3 is BETTER. (Sorry Sony)

What do you think to the OSMO POCKET 3? Do you think it's better than the ZV-1? There's PROs and CONs to both but I'd love to hear your opinions!

I don't consider myself as much of a photographer as you are, I am mainly just a point-and-shoot hobby photographer, a tech dad. I sold my Sony ZV-1, too. I never had another camera with an interchangeable lens. I only have my Galaxy S23+ and recently bought an Insta360 AcePro for everything else. Sometimes I still feel I have one camera too many, but it should be OK. The Osmo Pocket 3 is awesome but does not really fit into my usecases.

@@JackWoodhams I donno, to be honest. It was often too much of a hassle shooting with my phone, the ZV-1 and I even had an Osmo Action 1 occasionally. Then, getting home, combine all the photos, videos. You don't figure out how much you miss a device until you 1)don't buy it 2)you don't have it any more - you know what I mean. The ZV-1 was almost perfect but stabilization was simply bad for video and it was more hassle for point and shoot compared to a phone. The phone is just there - shoot :) Of course the results sometimes stood out but I always failed in low light or when the subject was moving.

@@JackWoodhams I give you another example: in summer we had a bird nesting just very close to our porch. I have set up some gear, phone, Action Cam and Sony ZV-1 on a joby like tripod. The Sony had the best result, proper zoom but overheated in about 10 minutes. The action cam lacked quality and zoom obviously while my Galaxy S23+ had the zoom, crisp video and images and was recording for 20-30+ minutes without an issue. That aswell made me think I probably don't need the ZV-1.

@@NegyedMisi sometimes you just have to try using all these things and then realise how each suits your needs (or doesn't) the osmo for me is a fantastic broll cam because of the built in gimbal. Means I can basically shoot anything without much thought.

Before watching this video, I bought the Fuji XH2s, but also had a ZV 1 MK1. It’s such a good little camera that I had no intentions of getting rid of it because it is a perfect B cam. I used to run my channel on it but obviously now I’m going to switch to the Fuji. I think anyone who ZV1 should keep it.

I like the idea of the DJI pocket 3 but I just bought an excellent condition, used, ZV-1 for a steal ($200 usd)! I’ll have to confess this is the 4th time I have bought the model, as I have returned it 3 previous times. What keeps me coming back is -4K video in this package beats every 2024 cell phone, iPhone notwithstanding -Nice photos out of the 1in. sensor/ 24-70 mm f1.8-2.8 zoom lens combo in good lighting -24 fps burst shooting mode, -tiny size -this time around very attractive price I think the camera’s active stabilization, (while not as rock solid as the pocket 3), is good enough for walking and talking vlogging without needing a gimbal,(though I still have one: Zhiyun crane M2S). What I did not like was the distortion in photos at the 24mm end (detest), the crop in 4k which makes the 24 mm selfie vlogging tight, and low light photos at ISO 3200 or more are no good. I’m going to give this another shot with the idea of it being a daytime, casual, walk and talk, vlogging camera, (with good enough stabilization where a gimbal is not needed), that can still get great framable photos.

good decision , im shooting most of my videos using pocket 3 even i own sony siii and fx3 , but i always find myself heading to pocket 3

Hi hows the overheating? What I understand is 4k 60 is only doing under 20min. Is it only good for short clips in eu? Any help would be great thanks. 😊

4k 60 for 20mins is a pretty long time. I only really use it for slow mo clips so don't really shoot exclusively in 4k 60.

Great video. New sub from me. I’m currently battling in my head about selling the ZV1 for the OP3. I’ve used the ZV1 on a gimbal a lot and the ease of getting a better image out of an all in one seems a no brainer.

@@JackWoodhamsdepends on what your expectations are. For me, the hand held walking around filming stabilization of the pocket 3 is better than the ZV-1, but the Zv-1 still in my opinion for casual vlogging has good enough stabilization while offering other advantages in the photography category with it’s 24-70mm zoom lens, creative style photo modes, 24fps burst shooting, and cute pocketable size.

Only downside is that you absolutely need the ND’s and they seriously decrease the speed of getting the cam out and packing it back into the hard case as the gimbal will not return to its safety position while an ND is on. Other than that I have nothing bad to say it’s so great

@@JackWoodhams ya they are a must have otherwise a lot of scenarios are off limits really for filming. Just used the Osmo on a ski trip and the ND 64 was on the cam at all times for filming but had to be removed for storage which took about 10-15 seconds. It’s not too bad until you’re working fast and under pressure

I love my pocket 3 so much that I’m considering selling my ZV1 to get a second one as backup. Despite being a longtime headshot photographer, I’m embarrassed to say I’ve never really shot much stills on the ZV1. Am I missing out?

It can only zoom in. The lens is a 20mm lens (approx) that can zoom in 4x in 1080p and 2x in 4k. 🙌

Big disclaimer here: I did the exact same switch, for the exact same purpose (top down shots), and while the Pocket 3 blows away the sony in every way, the lack of Optical zoom made my workflow a nightmare sadly. I am still trying to figure out how to film things, because I use both hands to work on electronic repairs for example, which alot of the times need that optical zoom, I kind of got carried away and got the Pocket 3 for the D-Log 10 bit, and for gimbal shot and forgot the key fact that it's missing optical zoom.

I just hate the gimbal-movements and thinking about this on the pockets. It is just not a good to handle camera. I don't understand the hype. Keeping my ZV-1. definitely.

What do you mean by you hate the gimbal movements, can you elaborate?

@@JackWoodhams It depends on the mode for the gimbal-head. A normal cam may be just pointed and shot. The gimbal may not follow the hands' moves depending on its mode. Also if you want to tilt or pan fast it may be slow, harder to move and not so comfortable to point at the target as normal cams are. This is a typical gimbal-thing, I know. BUT for the most users it may be definitely harder to understand and too execute. A normal gimbal may be used in situations you nedd one. With the pocket3 you don't have a real option not to use one. I know you can lock the head but it appears still not to be as intuitive to handle as normal cams are. I have the pocket two and it lives more or less only in my bag while all other cams from action3 to zv-1 and a7III are doing their work. So in comparison I seem not be the right user for this kind of cam. And talking to others they made similar experiences. So it maight be not the best buy for someone who wants just ONE cam. The pocket3 does not serve many needs.
