Cyber Sleuth gave me something I had always wanted from the Pokemon games. An actual cutscene with the monsters in your party. The moment at the end when Alphamon reveals that she teamed up with your Digimon in order to bring you back as the camera spins to show your character surrounded by your entire party almost made me tear up.

Closest we've got from what I can remember is the full team photographs from HG/SS and one cutscene in US/UM where if your starter is your party before entering the Elite Four, it comes out of the pokeball and hypes you up before going in

See I had the opposite reaction. I never got particularly attached to any digimon because the ability to digivolve/dedigivolve meant I was never able to keep track of who was who as I was filling out the dex. My final team ended up being random strong digimon that I pulled from the digifarm right before battle. So when that cutscene happened, I was like "alright... sure random digimon that I never interacted with before this moment..."

The second half of cybersleuth felt so smt it made me happy. Also on the switch I liked that if you sleep mode it still runs your digifarms, it looks like I played for 1600 hours because of all the times I let the farm do its thing while I was at work. Great game

i kinda wish i could turn it off sometimes. i don't want to be overleveled, i want to struggle pathetically and have to fight the same boss 20 times because the area enemies give at maximum 20 xp, and yet my team is still 10 levels below the boss. you know, the classic JRPEG experience

The card game is also a major contributing factor. It sorta came about because Bandai just slapped Digimon into Battle Spirits to try and save that TCG, only for the reaction to be insanely positive and make them want to give Digimon its own TCG. That game was so good that the Western audience starting ordering Japanese cards and making the game annoyingly easy to play digitally through legally dodgy means, so we got it mostly to shut us up. Its currently floating somewhere around being the fourth best-selling TCG.

Except from the Anime. Considering that TOEI is obsessed with Adventure, making more sequels and even creating a reboot in 2020, which were worst than the last. Ghost Game is fine and did well, but many didn't like it because of its episodic formula. And this is also adding Last Kizuna and 02 The Beginnings, because Last Kizuna is just Tri again and The Beginnings was leaked by many who see it premiere in an event, and to put it shortly, it f*cks the whole universe of Adventure.

@@ZenSymphonia Cyber Sleuth if you want the more "collecting" digimon with good story. Survive if you want more "serious" story and creepier atmosphere because the traditional Japanese myth like the "kamikakushi" and the "digital world" is more like upgraded youkai world

Cyber sleuth is by far one of the most important games in the digimon revival that has been happening in the west, with the digimon card game being a critical succes and digimon survive being an absolutely amazing story, digimon has been growing a lot recently, and with the vital bracelet and more products, digimon has been enjoying more and more popularity in recent years, and the first step that they took was releasing cyber sleuth, so yeah, one of the most iconic and fun games there is for any digimon fan everybody!

CyberSleuth is crazy addicting. Digi-volving back and forth to see what new creatures you get just hits hard. I find myself recommending these two games to anyone who has an interest in pokemon. No, it's not exactly the same but if you like collecting and evolving pokemon, you will absolutely love this because there's even more collecting and evolving because of how freely you can jump between different monsters.

I like The hacker memories ending, its really make me release that the MC, Keisuke is really a normal random person that get involved by more bigger scenario, the Cyber Sleuth main story. yes the Keisuke manage to protect the Net world + Real world while the Main story MC go agains the last boss but when you reach ending, the game remind you that you already reach the goal. more of this is the Sleuth Protagonis part. But yea... its better sweet, i hope its more soft or happy for keisuke.

The fact the localisation came out the same year as Uncharted 4 and Doom 2016 while still managing to sell well for a brand that had been falling behind prior is impressive. Had they waited longer to pull the trigger, it might have went up against stiff competition like Persona 5 and have a Rayman Legends situation happen with it.

YES!! Cyber Sleuth and Hacker's Memory are my favorites RPGs ever. Been waiting this video ever since your mention in the What is SMT video. Even if they have more parallels with Soul Hackers, they actually inspired me to go after Devil Survivor 2 because of the similar graphic style, and that ended up becoming my second favorite RPG ever.

Just a little tip if you don’t wanna wait hours to raise your digimon, you can play the switch version and leave the game in suspended mode, it’ll continue to play in the background and your digimon will continue to be in training gaining levels. At first it confused me why I had 100 hrs after not playing for over 3 days lmao, but I realized it helps a lot of you wanna level up digimon fast.

I have convinced my friends into playing Cybersleuth. And they liked it. I liked it. Coming from someone who had loved Digimon series and seeing how it tackles topics much darker than Pokemon, it was a really interesting series. I used to play the crud out of Digimon World Dawn back when it came out. Back to Cybersleuth, its story was something that caught my attention and played the memory out of it. The story itself was dark and twists at the time were really cool. Now I play the Digimon TCG as well which is becoming one of my top tcg to play now.

I remember being really let down by sword and shield and went on a tear looking for new games to scratch that itch. I found this and then Monster Hunter stories 2 and gotdamn I’m glad I did. Love the changes to the formula here and there. ESP here I loved just building a mega digimon going all the way to the end of the fusions and back and forth until I accumulated all the moves I needed. Just really pleasing stuff. Loved triple battles as the norm and the changing order on the side of the screen. It’s not perfect and it feels very stilted at times, but yeah. Big fan.

I always loved the Digimon franchise since Adventure and Cyber Sleuth were a surprise to me when they came out! I instantly bought it when I found out about it and was satisfied. I knew that they were parallels to SMT and Cyber Slueth, but I didn't think it was extensive as is. Also, I would suggest a discussion video since it would leave the comparison more open on the comparison with SMT ...if and ...if; plus Strange Journey and Annihilation.

Fantastic video, love to see any discussion around Digimon that isn't boiled down to it being compared to Pokemon. Also the brief history rundown in the beginning was great since it may be familiar to longtime fans but it helps outsiders feel a greater appreciation for the game. I dug Hacker's Memory more as it let you start with Betamon, which actually digivolved into Airdramon. But yeah, it's great and it is basically Soul Hackers. Regarding the "death" of Digimon, it actually went dormant twice, once after the Pendulum X era for about a year, and then again after Xros Wars for like a few years. Of course, during those gaps there were still things like video games and the like, so the franchise has been roughly continuously pumping stuff out the whole time, but there was definitely a period when their original core audience got too old and they had skewed so dark that new kids weren't jumping on, especially after the Pendulum X situation. But now that initial audience has wrapped back around from nostalgia and Digimon has only continued to grow up with them, and as a result the brand has ballooned. They're pumping out a new generation of pets every year, and the number of dim cards for the VB is frankly frightening. Add to that the regular sequel movies to the old cartoons and Ghost Game, plus the long awaited release of Survive, Digimon is thriving. Pokemon, on the other hand, is at this point an empty, shambling corpse. I still love the original game and it's sequel, they truly are classics in the genre, but despite the money the brand still takes in, the actual video games these days are just ridiculous. Megaten and Digimon are in every way the best option for people looking for mon games these days, as they just keep getting better while Pokemon festers and stagnates. ...and also Palworld. Palworld looks awesome.

Another thing to note about scanning is that the percentage varies depending on the classification of a Digimon. For example, a fresh Digimon will grant a much higher scanning percentage than a Mega level one. Cyber Sleuth is one of my favorite Digimon games as well as Digimon World DS and the Dawn and Dusk games. Will get into Hacker's Memory as well.

The first Cyber Sleuth was my first experience with Digimon(outside of renting the movie when I was very young) cause my friend recommended it to me since I enjoy monster collecting games. I was so instantly hooked and now I am a certified Digimon fan and enjoy aspects of it way more than Pokemon, a series I have grown up with and have many fond memories of. But now I have fond memories and strong attachments to the Digimon in these games. To the point where when I look for, or make a deck for the new TCG, it almost always has involved my beloved team members from my playthrough. Cyber Sleuth is a great game and honestly the game I've recommended most people start with for Digimon. (Also great video and I didn't expect to come out of it being interested in a totally different game series)

what I really love about both cyber sleuth games is how timeless they are; multiple years after the release they are imo still one of the best jrpgs for ps4 and overall one of the better turn-based rpgs of the mid-late 2010s the biggest downside for me personally was the bad localisation at some points in the game as u mentioned; all in all really love your video and commentary on cyber sleuth!

Data Squad felt so grown up when I was in middle school. I loved it! Still love it 😅. Played all 3 DS titles (Dawn, dusk, and DS). Cyber sleuth was my return to the franchise after putting it down for a few years.

I was introduced to Digimon through Cybersleuth last month, and I gotta say - I really love this game, despite its decent flaws. Being able to raise almost any Digimon, with stronger ones needing much more care and understanding about how ABI works is stupidly satisfying. Bringing your literal babies out of their shells is a mechanic much better executed in here than in Pokémon. They also nearly nailed battling, both it and raising are THE reason this game is fantastic, imo. One thing I think you should've touched more is the difficulty. Hard mode makes enemies just strong enough for you to need to consider your options, early on. Later on, you really will need to understand buffs/debuffs and the DEF/INT penetrating attacks. Sometimes it requires you to use items, but I found that it made the game that much more engaging if you want a challenge. I've just started Hacker's Memory and it's already making me drool thinking about replaying both it and Cybersleuth, experimenting with different Digimon paths and combinations. If they had skippable cutscenes, they'd be absolutely perfect for replaying.

I'm so glad someone else noticed that Arata is literally the Devil Survivor 2 protagonist, design-wise. Thought I was the only one lol Sadly, though, I have to say that you couldn't sell the game on me. But that's because I already bought the Steam version when it came out, so yeah, I love this game! And now I know why everything felt so natural to me even though I never grew up with Digimon, didn't watch the anime, etc. It really does have a lot of "SMT" in it. Even down to the hard mode with its easy enemies but damage sponges for bosses (if you're always underleveled, like me😅)

Since the sub series name is technically Digital Monster Story, isn't it like just one step away from just Digital Devil Story? The latest game Digimon Survive also has a Negotiation mechanic that lets you recruit enemy Digimon or ask for items from them too. Anyway, great video! A key franchise for both Mon-RPGs and Virtual Pets... I'm hungry for the next Story, the next World, and LUCEMON WILLING Survive 2. Also I feel like one of the most fun parts of Digimon is how the anime reinterpreted V-Pet care as analogue to self-care and in effect helped seal in the idea all Digimon media needs some level of trauma in it.

Wooohoo it's good to hear that the second half of the game picks up the pace, because I'm definitely feeling stuck in the more "boring parts" because the missions keep making me go back to the same old locations multiple times. I love monster catching games, and I play a ton of them. Including Digimon Story, Monster Hunter Stories 2, Monster Sanctuary, Pokemon of course-- Legends Arceus especially, Nexomon Extinction, and recently got Temtem. Every good monster catching game has its own identity, downs, ups, and personality.

4:35 Digimon World was the first Digimon game... to see an international release. The ACTUAL first Digimon game was "Digital Monster Ver. S: Digimon Tamers" for Sega Saturn. 6:33 Similarly, "Digimon Savers: Another Mission" and "Digimon Championship" were released in America (yes, AMERICA, since Europe never got them nor the World DS/Dawn and Dusk) as "Digimon World: Data Squad" and "Digimon World Championship", the latter was the last Digimon console game released internationally. Funnily enough, the name of the campaign to convince Dandai Namco to release Digimon games in the West again was called "Operation Decode", in reference to "Digimon Story Re:Digitize Decode", which, to this day, is still Japan-exclusive (there are fan translations, at least). And, personally, Hacker's Memory is my favorite Digimon game, followed by Cyber Sleuth and Dawn/Dusk. I would love to see reviews of the older Digimon Story titles in the future.

Being one the mentioned "Pokemon Refugees", Digimon has that rich and very, VERY deep lore and story that Pokemon only ever scratched the surface on. As an avid Pokemon fan who never played a single Digimon game (other than a little digivice...thing) and really only watched the first 3 series of Digimon, I was seriously surprised how much I love this game. I got it several months after getting Pokemon Sword and Shield. It was on discount on the Nintendo Switch and I was bored, looking for something new. Right away this "Pokemon knockoff" had: 1) full voice acting, 2) polished cutscenes, 3) THREE Digimon that follow behind you at once and 4) A serious plot with darker undertones. This is all stuff that people have complained about are missing in Pokemon games (with the exception of maybe #4 because Pokemon is pretty light hearted except in some spinoffs). After Sword and Shield, I can't help but wonder why this supposed less popular franchise put more quality into their game than Nintendo/Gamefreak did. Not to mention, I loved the soundtrack and was very happy to see I wasn't treating the Digimon as if they were Pokemon thanks to the complex type advantage system, more slots and of course the encouragement to digivolve AND dedigivolve to discover more forms. This was honestly one of the best purchases I ever made on a whim. It just stands out really well on its own.

digimon fan since it arrived in germany. i love digimon forever. i even play the card game. bought cyber sleuth a couple years ago and this game is awesome. everyone who likes digimon must play this. some digivolutions are a pain to get but when you got them it was worth the effort.

If you can get it on PC or Switch as to put short PS4/Vita version is overall inferior as the PC/Switch version includes this and it's sequel in 1, and includes all the rebalances and QoL changes from the sequel to the original as well, making it a better package overall.

this game way the digimon game i always wanted. the character designs are nice and highly unique (Yuuko Kamishiro is my favourite btw), the story was entertaining with a few twists here and there, the gameplay was a blast and all the collecting and evolving made it much more distinct and fun. funnily enough i also played this game during a time of struggle and combining with the early childhhod digimon nostalgia, it has now a special place in my heart. all in all i want to thank you for this nic, informative and fun to watch video, i will probably play the game later again thanks to you and watch other of your videos.

I've loved Digimon and Pokemon since they first started gaining popularity in the west, and while I certainly had more Pokemon content to choose from, I always felt like Digimon was the better of the two personally. Like you mentioned, it had an edge to it that Pokemon didn't. It wasn't afraid to look at the darker sides of what it's content meant, while Pokemon remained content for kids that adults just happened to enjoy. As I've grown up, I've come to appreciate that edge more and more because it almost feels like the IP has grown with me, rather than remaining as something only intended for kids. Whereas Pokemon has seemed afraid of showing the challenging aspects of the in world reality, Digimon didn't shy away from that. Cyber Sleuth and Hacker's Memory both were absolutely incredible IMO and they were exactly the type of thing I wanted in terms of a game. It reminded me heavily of Digimon World 4, which back in the days of the PSone was my SHIT! Seriously, I couldn't tell you how many hours I sank into playing that game over and over. I sincerely hope that they continue to develop more games in this kind of style. While Digimon Survive was interesting, to me games set up like CS and HM will always be the best. Especially when the game doesn't kill my digi-friends unnecessarily and force me to start back over with them 🙃 seriously, I couldn't finish Next Order because it got on my nerves so much.

I wanted to play this since I saw your what is and isn’t an SMT game video. I’ve gotten really into persona 4 and really am waiting for Persona 5 and 3 on steam. I’m saving up for a vita to get The original 3 persona games. I’m not sure the mainline is for me, but I still want to play the games that are in the persona universe like SMT if… and the devil summoner series even if I have to use a script for the original game. You mentioning the similarities between this and Soul Hackers 1 intrigued me.

I'm a bit late to this party, in several ways. Late to the video but also late in that I grew up with Digimon's english version, seriously disliked it for the reasons you covered (and some more you didn't), and it was literal decades later that someone convinced me to try out the Japanese version of Tamers specifically. I became a fan almost overnight. Then someone told me about CyberSleuth and it became my most played game from the last 7 years. I'm so happy that Digimon is enjoying a brief resurgence thanks to Steam releases and such. Keep it up, BancamNaido or whatever your logo is going to say next!

Have you seen the TCG game they made in 2020, it have some really interesting mechanics that feel and play in a original way. its sad to see digimon not receiving the attention that it deserves, the story from some of the quests are so mature and actually try to show the dangers of this kind of scenario, ill never forget the questline where a corporation uses digimon to make people "stuck" in eden with their "soul mate" so they can get in their house and kidnap them, the game has some really well thought stuff that really stand out to me when i played it for the first time.
