This video is very interesting for me because, I have just completed a course with Gayle Levee and, I have increased my skill level 10 fold. Although I am a Bob Ross CRI ( Certified Ross Instructor) my knowledge of art was very limited. Being a CRI is not a proper Artist. I was just a replicator of the Wet-In-Wet technique that can be done by anyone. To be a true Artist you have to 'serve your time' and learn the art of colour science, Perspectives, etc. Thank you for your video upload.

Wait a minute at the beginning of the video the first thing he mentions is making sure that you're making art that will be popular in the market he specifically mentions making trendy art that will sell in order to become a successful artist. Then he ends the video with just make art that you want to make for the sheer pleasure of doing it. So which is it?

Great question! At first glance, it does seem contradictory. But, notice that the spirit for all of Randy's advice is conveyed in the first 15 sec when he says, "I painted things that I thought I could sell. And then, through reading and talking to my mentors, they said, 'no, paint for the sheer pleasure of creating and then once it's completed, then come up with a strategy on how to sell. Don't paint to sell.'" The video ends with Randy reiterating that same advice, "Do it for the sheer enjoyment and the rest will come to you."

+ArtistChronicle you heard him urging to be unique...that's the same as trying to make art salable really. You have to decide your motive and stick to it...to be a commercially minded or fine art minded artist...then just give it your best energy etc....both my successful artist parents' advice.

There is no contradiction. He tells us to be a financially successsful artist, we have to create the type of art that is selling. When Van Gogh was painting, "impressionistic" paintings were considered to be sketches, unfinished products and did not sell well. Cameras were new and most people did not own them, and they were generally inconvenient. So people wanted more realistic images (or flattering ones) painted. Still, Van Gogh created impressionistic works because he saw the world through an impressionistic lens. So his style of painting was not in vogue, and he made very little money painting, but he still painted. He painted what he felt, what he wanted to . Art is so personal that I cannot create fan art just because it will sell. However, people do tend to buy fan art. There is no contradiction. You may not be able to make money doing the type of art you love is what he is saying in so many words. That doesn't mean don't market. It means be realisitic.

Great advice. Thank you so much. I think the best part was about getting a return for advertisment. I feel motivated to get my art out there!

Distracted by poor camera work, the buildings behind are in focus; the people speaking are not. The conent also lacks clarity.

When an artist stops realizing he is a commodity just like any other service or product that has to be promoted or marketed that is when you stop realizing that no one is going to buy your art unless they are aware of the fact that you are even producing it. www.coroflot.com/jfronza/PAINTINGS
