I would rather learn pre mistake making. Your help and advice gives so much direction and food for thought. Thank you. 💐 Teresa, Glasgow. Scotland.

I was all set to record a video on another topic but your comment/question has been one of many I've received lately (although yours in particular really set this video in motion). I do hope it was useful; I didn't go into specific detail only because it would have been two hours long otherwise and trust me when I say that no one wants to see that! haha :) Have a great day!

Thank you for your guidance, because im definitely lost. Ive almost reached the point where joy is no longer a part of me, i want to put this pain i have into my art. I quit my job, abused drugs, ran out of money, lost contact with family and friends, hardly leave my house, and im on the brink of lossing everything. Not looking for pity, because there are so many others are out there in the same boat. I only hope my artwork will connect to those who, like me, look for inspiration. Im gonna try to get my job back and get to work again, ive had enough sitting around feeling sorry for myself. Thanks again for the wisdom you shared, time to get things straight.

Hi Ellen.... I've been around the block a couple of times but am still searching for more avenues to show my art further. I have yet to spread my wings among many social networks and sites, basically from lack of how to use them. Your thoughts, whether basic or not open a lot of doors for beginners and your point about knowing what you want to accomplish in the beginning to target your audience is an excellent one to really think about. As far as websites, I agree with you, however a good looking website stands out above the crowds when it comes to professionalism, so it's important to think about content and visual appeal as well as just owning one and dumping your art in it. Good points for your viewers. I look forward to your next one, thanks.

What a great point, John - and thank you for bringing that up regarding a good looking website. This is something I've not put much thought into I'm embarrassed to say. I may need to clean house and spruce mine up a bit! I know you've asked about Pinterest and I wanted to let you know I haven't forgotten your question. I have to say though, of all the platforms I use, Pinterest is the one I seem to neglect the most so I may not be the best person to offer an opinion 😆 I'm working on it though!

Hi DeeJay28.... my major source of social networking is LinkedIn as it is business related. I'm on facebook but don't find it very productive. I started Instagram but I'm having difficulty transferring photos from my computer to my ipad (which I dislike using) just to get photos on the site... not sure about "tagging" either. We're probably missing a lot because of our ignorance, but I'm not as young as I used to be and learning this tech stuff is a struggle. There are a lot of great youtube videos on pretty much everything so that would be a good place to start. Ellen has a great channel with lots of good content and info, you can learn a lot from her as well.... and her art is wonderful! I do have a website through Bluehost, which I would not recommend because of cost but that would be a good thing to have if you could get traffic to it. As an artist you may want to try ArtStation. I just signed up for their pro package, at the time it was $72 a year and they have a great website package that displays your work professionally, as well as they now have the capability to allow you to sell digitally, later they will have traditional hardcopy sales. This just started a month or so ago so I'm kind of excited about it. No worries about hackers or website issues, they take care of it all. As soon as my Bluehost contract expires I think I will be setting up shop there. My bluehost, wordpress site was hacked in December and it cost me a bundle to clean it up.... stay away from them and wordpress if you can. Check it out.... www.artstation.com/ Good luck, and don't forget to continue watching Ellen, she's been a great help.

@Ellen Brenneman Studio Hi there! I want to get more involved with the vintage / salvage arts community on etsy. this may sound like a silly question. I was wonder how I can engage with potential customers since I am at 0 purchases so far. What do you think of messaging other sellers with a similar style to mine & asking them if they'd be interested in visiting my shop?
@EllenBrennemanStudio5 жыл бұрын
If you are specifically interested in having others visit your shop, I recommend checking out the Etsy forums. There are several helpful threads and groups that aid in helping each other. You could ask for feedback on your photos, descriptions, ask for critiques, or merely ask if anyone has any advice on how to reach potential customers and what's worked for them. When I was just starting out it was really beneficial and people are generally eager to assist!

FaceBook business page is up and running, Instagram too and website domain name registered. Amazon does not currently carry this but you can view it from Lexjet's website. I enjoy using this paper because it holds ink well, doesn't buckle and inks come out completely dry right away. Just a good, solid paper. Best of luck to you in your exciting art career!!

Helpful. New to selling art. I have plans to print art on shirts, water color paintings, graphic novels, portraits, as well as digital art. The question is, do I have to make a separate portfolio for different mediums, or do I just put a miscellaneous collection together?
@EllenBrennemanStudio Жыл бұрын
that's a really good question. It used to be widely thought that it's more important to do one thing really, really well so people will remember who you are and come back because you're known for that one thing, but I honestly think things have changed. More people are now doing multiple things to make ends meet/be successful. If it were me, I'd definitely have a separate portfolio on hand just to show in case I'd need them for networking purposes, but as for selling? I'd have different categories for my work, present them in a clean way and sell everything I'm most proud of. *you can always niche down later.

You're very welcome and I hope you're not too discouraged. The right time will come and you'll know when. Hi Ellen! Your information is amazing - thank you so much for sharing it with us all. I have question about the studio equipment list you posted. You have one printer for your prints and another for scanning. Can you elaborate a little on why you prefer scanning over a digital camera? Also, why two printers? Is it too hard to find one that will give you the larger prints and true colors when you scan? Do you use any photo editing software on your digital files after scanning? Thanks again, I really admire your work.
@EllenBrennemanStudio4 жыл бұрын
Hi, Ann 😊 thank you for your kind words regarding my work. To answer your questions: I use my Canon 100 strictly for prints and the all in one printer for everything else because the ink on the 100 series is more expensive and I don't want to waste it on everyday copies. I prefer a scanner because I don't have to worry about trying to find the best lighting for photos; with scanning, there are no shadows, no worries about light balance - just scan and done. I use Photoshop Elements and PicMonkey for editing. I hope this helps!

Hi, Jesse! My philosophy has always been, that if I can manage and fulfill several accounts without them looking neglected and casting a bad light to my brand then absolutely! The way our market is right now, it's always a good idea to cast a wide net. If you don't want to feel like you're too oversaturated in the market you could always put exclusive 'themed' pieces on different sites so each one looks deliberately curated. Good luck to you! ☺️👍🏼

When choosing my domain, should I use my full name or should I focus on my initials since that is how I sign my paintings? (TKS Fine Art, for example)
@EllenBrennemanStudio2 жыл бұрын
I often sign my smaller pieces with my initials, too. Then, sign my full name on the back so there's no question about who painted the piece. I always suggest using your full name whenever possible online because it identifies you without question.

@EllenBrennemanStudio4 жыл бұрын
Your work is yours, and is automatically copyrighted the minute you complete it. When I sell a painting, I retain the copyright, which means I can create as many prints, limited edition series of prints, merchandise, etc. from that piece. Copyright is not transferrable with the sale of a painting, and I always add that to my description on Etsy so the buyer knows. I hope this helps!

Hey thank you so much for the info. I just started selling my art work.... but to be very honest... it is really hard to do that. My question is that do we need to open a company in order to sell paintings on eBay or etsy? Love from California 👍
@EllenBrennemanStudio4 жыл бұрын
You do not need to open a company to sell on either platform.

Hey Ellen! I just discovered your channel and your video was soooo helpful! Do you have any advice for someone trying to start out on instagram and at what point i should start selling my art? Also how to determine prices and where to even get my art printed to be sold especially if i paint on canvas since i cant just slap one on a copier since it wont fit? And something that i really need help with is posting enough and even being able to do art enough, do you have any tips on how to be more engaged without rushing things and overworking yourself? Thanks!
@EllenBrennemanStudio5 жыл бұрын
Hi, Stacey! Good images are key and if you paint on canvas have a good camera handy to take photos (before varnishing) and you should be able to make prints from that once you do a bit of editing. As for being more engaged and not overworking yourself I still have not figured that one out! 😂 Being more mindful and taking more breaks in nature is what recharges me, but I have to force myself to do it; I'm not quite to the point yet where I take the time just for me. 😕

Thank you for the tips! How could you deal with the situation once you receive orders while you're traveling in other counties? I mean, is there someone to help you pack and ship the product?
@EllenBrennemanStudio4 жыл бұрын
I make an announcement in my listings that I'm going to be out of town, then give dates that I'll be gone. Then I update my ship-by date info so my customer knows when their item will ship. This works if you're going to be gone for a week or so, but if you're talking 1-2 months, you'd either have to get help or put your shop in vacation mode.

@@EllenBrennemanStudio I just found your video, purely by accident watching videos about Iris Scott. This video came up as a suggestion so I grabbed it and well here I am. Question though: How do you deal with the shipping of your work? Do you just go to someplace like FedEx or UPS, or do you get special packaging. It is the shipping that terrifies me. I mean it's got to be some work. Is it very expensive? Oh, I'm a subscriber now so I can maybe catch some of your other videos when I am not working at my job or busy painting in my studio (which right now is only part time, just not really selling yet. . .just got into art and crafts fairs and I've only been to one of those, though there are a couple on my list for this spring and summer so far.) Sorry, I ramble on, so glad I found you.

@@fromdebsstudio2022 thank you for your comment 🙂 it can be confusing and a bit overwhelming at first, but I believe my videos will help answer your questions about shipping. I am not at my desktop so I’m unable to easily offer direct links for you, however, if you go through my previous videos you’ll see several where I discuss printing/shipping in detail.

Can you do a weekly series that walks us thru what to do? With assignments each week? I am overwhelmed with the process,
@EllenBrennemanStudio3 жыл бұрын
The best advice I can immediately give to you is to prioritize and only tackle one thing at a time. When you see working artists who have everything in working order realize that it likely took months (or years) to find that rhythm. I still become overwhelmed even after nearly 10 years because I always feel like I should be doing 'more'. You'll get there ❤

When you spread out your work, do you display all your work on every site?

Not always. I have found that my following is different on IG than on FB so when it's appropriate to do so, I gear specific posts for each audience.

@@jeremyartist1698 I definitely sell originals, and when I do they are usually sold via my FB business page, through online auctions or on Etsy. Thanks for your question :)

Shari, hi! Yes, I do have a recommendation for a canvas printer: I use this company and they provide a drop shipping service: www.cgproprints.com

Most all of my paintings have sold; some took longer than others, but it just takes the right person to come along. You never know who will be interested. As for tips on selling, this is why I created my KZbin channel - to share what has worked for me. I hope you're able to find use in some of my videos.
