famasmaster2000 I have to go through the old ones; I cringe when I watch them, but I'm thinking of breaking one or something of them back or certain parts. A lot of the old videos I find difficult to watch, even the way I talk and everything is different in the old ones which is kinda crazy lol

Matthew Little Hey thanks! It was interesting one time, my parents many years ago, probably 10 years ago, they had this 40 foot long trailer. I don't know why exactly. My dad often goes to auctions and always buys just about whatever and everything was in this trailer. When we sold the trailer, we had cleaned out all of these auction boxes with anything and everything in them. One of the boxes I found had 20 some tiger hood welding helmets in it. I still have a number of them, one of them was a fibre metal helmet from long, long ago; this big, big helmet with what seemed like a cast iron flip front adapter on it lol. I was never big on the tiger hoods, I'm not too sure why, but a friend of mine he really liked those helmets and two of my other friends were starting their apprenticeship in welding, I gave them some of the helmets to get them going.

I've noticed you have some "slashes" cut in the lower part of some of your hoods. Some are vertical slashes and some are more of a horizontally oriented. what are they for and don't they let light in? Have you ever tried a hood that has been really cut down allot? I've got my pipeliner cut way back with leather riveted to the bottom and top. I've done a few for friends and on other brands of hoods. Anyway, another great video. let us know what other essential tools you use on the job.

how much heavier does the front flip feel compared to the standard pipeliner? is it enough to make it uncomfortable?

Juan Prieto I prefer the black filter lenses. Shade 8 for tig welding, shade 9 for arc welding, and shade 11 for Aluminum and walking the cup to help see the weld puddle better.

Juan Prieto not really, we just have very generic brands of welding lenses here and they're always just a green shade. Though the gold lens is pretty nice for arc welding with 6010, it helps to see the weld puddle a little bit better.

James Yairi It's a person preference type thing really, some guys like the auto lens helmets while some guys like just a standard helmet with fixed shade

Sadly they don't sell these adapters on their own anymore, but you can pay an extra 30$ for a whole hood and just take it off.

The OutCaster Yes, you need a very thin rectangular file. Where the lenses slide into the flip front, you will use the file to thin down the spot so that the thicker auto lens will slide in better

+Joe Pearson Actually the helmets are just old and worn. The appearance on them is from welding spatter and being thrown around really. 6010/7010/8010 will wear them out very quick too

Hey fieldres , I am having trouble on a 5g 6" pipe. Running the 7018 cap with 2 bead cap. On sch. 40 can you post a demo on running that rod. I am having trouble on the bottom of it . Can you help a brother out. Thx bud

DaddyFat Sacks What kind of trouble are you having? I would set the machine to have as low of voltage as possible, so either if using a generator welder, have the amperage range as high as possible and the voltage fine current as low as possible - unless the machine has too much drive in behind the arc, then you can drop the gear and raise the fine current. If using an inverter type machine, set the arc force to 'crisp, 6010 mode, +10, 10 or 100" and this will decrease the voltage. Certain machines have different volt amp curves; the Lincoln generators will have drooping volt amp curves, the inverters like the ranger/vantage, various shop machines, miller xmt, etc., they'll typically have a downhill mode or CC mode, but cc mode is constant current - if you adjust the arc length, on a generator welder, with the high gear/low fine current, holding a tight arc will increase amperage/decrease voltage while giving slight arc length will decrease amperage/increase voltage, and CC machines, essentially the voltage will change while the amperage will remain the constant (constant current) but provided you decreased the voltage in the weld puddle with setting the machine to have a decrease in voltage, whether doing weaving, but most likely a stringer if its sch.40 pipe, most likely 2 stringers beside on another unless its larger pipe, you will be able to hold a tight arc to the pipe, not snuff out, be able to adjust arc length while will adjust your immediate amperage and voltage, so you will be able to control the solidification of the weld puddle by decreasing the voltage; if weaving for example from side to side, you can hold a tight arc in the sides and watch the weld puddle go from an oblong appearance to now a rounded appearance, move to the opposite side and hold a tight arc, the tight arc/manipulating arc length will decrease the voltage in the weld puddle which will chill out the weld puddle, and the puddle will follow you over to the side you are on. What happens is guys will set their machine to 7018 mode or -10, or low gear and high fine current, and they have a soft puddle characteristic, the machine doesn't have drive or push behind the arc, and the puddle is more liquid and takes longer to solidify due to the voltage. arc length manipulation does not have as much of influence on adjusting the immediate amperage and voltage in such setting, the heat remains relatively consistent, and what happens is guys will give arc length to the pipe because they don't want to touch the pipe and snuff out. So the increase voltage due to their arc length, and they have voltage already in the weld puddle because of the setting on the machine, and moving from left side to right side or even stringers in vertical up position, the middle of the weld just collects all the heat, because the weld puddle has so much voltage, its not solidifying, so you move left to right, and it doesn't matter how long you pause, the weld puddle will still remain a liquid and the warmth of the weld puddle will collect in the middle of the weld, as it stays liquid longer, and that's when you cannot stack metal because you cannot stack your liquid weld puddle you are carrying on top of previously deposited metal that is still relatively a liquid, it cannot hold your weld puddle up, but also the metal is affected via gravity so any metal that is still slightly liquid will be affected by gravity and quite often on the bottom and progressing upwards to a bout 3 oclock, this is usually the case. Plus a lot of heat soaks into the pipe because the metal is not cooling down as you travel up the pipe, so the further you travel up the pipe, the more the middle protrudes outwards and the more undercut you get on the sides, and the weld is not flat. this is because of the voltage on the machine and not manipulating the arc length to adjust the immediate amperage and voltage in the arc.

Well I am here in Houston tx. And trading with Fluor for the upgrade combo pipe welder course. And I am running this on a miller in shop. I run the temp on 90 with 1/8 7018 rod in the 5g position . And I am just not having good 6 o'clock to 9 and 3 stringer beads. I am doing a 2 bead cap and I am wonder if you can shot a quick to help me out as a visual ? Thx

***** I was thinking about bringing back some of the deleted videos, but I always cringe watching them. Even in this video, I talk completely different from the first part of the video from 2 years ago to the last part that I quickly put together yesterday which is why the first part is really shortened. Sometimes I think of making just a 'random' video that has things from all over. The new ones I always have a spot where I'm thinking of adding something funny in and then when I edit the video, I think "no, I should probably take that out"

***** Actually I used to have a video or two wearing those foam hulk hands, I can't remember if it was the one about the white dually or one of the old ones but I always joked about the welders dragging their knuckles in the video. The other one, the kowalsky one was about trying to get a welder out of his truck and to work., the idea came to me being on a site with a welder who the fitters would tell him he needs to get to work since the pipe is tacked and he'd come up with excuses and tell them 'tell the foreman you couldn't find me' and then he'd get out of his truck and hang out with another welder eating popcorn behind his truck. I still kinda laugh about it, but that's what schneetiger77 was referencing about., I still think about bringing back the older videos or else re doing them somehow

Josh riewestahl I can't remember which video had the magnum in it or what I ever did with that one.. a lot of them I ended up removing because a person never quite knows who watches the videos, and may not understand if someone is just joking, telling a joke, or being funny compared to being serious; so I always prefer to have a serious video so people know what to expect, especially when they form an opinion of you watching the video and also when they end up meeting you in person.
