I have made a full-size quilt with selvages and haven't made a dent in my stash. For me, sorting by size would be more convenient than sorting by color, but I don't have the time to sort at all. I just use them. I prefer scrappy usage anyway.

I fill a large zippered bag with selvages (one that sheet set came i). I make placemats for meals on wheels - one time I could make each one color coordinated. Also made a mat for under my coffee maker and mug rugs. I try to cut them with at least 1/2” of fabric showing and sometimes I try to get them as long as possible. I only sort them when I’m ready to make a bunch of projects.

I prewash my fabric, so I have a lot of experience with washed selvages. Some shrink at the same rate as the fabric, and some shrink more than the fabric. There are times when I have to clip the selvages at intervals in order to be able to iron the fabric flat. If you like having your projects crinkle after washing, the difference in shrinkage might not be an issue for you, but there could be times when you’ll get a “bubble” of fabric due to the shrinkage difference. I rarely save selvages for projects. I do keep them when I’m cutting very long strips from the length of my fabric. I use those long selvage strips to tie bundles of fabric together. I use a Pigma pen to write the color number of the fabric - using the numbers from my 3-in-1 color tool - on the selvage because I store my fabrics in numerical order. I also write other information such as color name and number and fabric company on solids or color name and year on other fabrics. Not all selvages have complete identify information on them, so I try to anticipate what I’ll want to know in the future. When I cut pieces from my fabric, I start at the side with the unprinted selvage, and when I eventually get to the printed side, I often cut so that the selvage remains attached to the remaining fabric.

Thanks so much for sharing all that information! I have never washed a project made of selvages…. I don’t need to wash my sewing machine mats, wall hanging, or pincushions.

I made a grocery bag with selvages and I have washed and dried it with my whites. I thought it turned out just fine, but it's a grocery bag. It doesn't matter much if it shrinks a bit.

I’m a bit more picky about what selveges I save. I generally cut the selvege off before cutting up the fabric so that I have long pieces. I don’t want short pieces and it has to have the entire writing and everything showing. Also, if it’s not real cute, I’m not interested. Great idea on sorting and saving. I can’t wait to do this.

The dots on the selvages are helpful for choosing coordinating fabrics however, that isn’t why they are there. They show the order of printing the different colors.

I do have a stash of selvages. I have made pincushions from them, and i also make 8” squares of selvages that I will use to make something(s) eventually. I love the differences in them, some have color dots, some have dates when the fabric was made, or lettering. I also like the texture of some selvages that have a frayed look along the edge. A couple of things I would like to make from selvages are: recover my sewing machine chair with them, make a tote bag, and I do love your thread spools in this video…that would be a cute wall hanging to make for my sewing studio! Thank you for sharing this video!

I also save selvages and mine are also crammed into zippered plastic bags! I do separate my flannels from my quilting fabric. I have made potholders using 2 layers of denim (from my boys old jeans) and selvages, plus a longer selvedge to bind. I love the sewing machine mat you made. It makes me wonder if placemats are possible? Your Sterlite lid with the crack is a problem I've noticed at the store when shopping for storage bins. I've had to pick through the lids to find ones without cracks.

Placemats would be great but they might get crinkly when washed unless they are just for decorating. That lid is disappointing….I try to always check but I missed it!!!!

I have saved a few selvages. I like longer pieces and I use them to tie quilts or fabric bundles. I was thinking they would make good warp (or is it weft?) strings for my woven rag rugs as they are a little stronger due to the tight weave. I currently store mine in a giant brandy snifter I happen to have. I certainly don’t use it for brandy😅
