Thank you Dr. Nimer Abusalim for putting this series together. This is my first video and I learnt for the first time in +40 years exactly what and how utterances work. The reason I searched utterances is to assist me in Data Science Natural Language. (DSNL) Not only did I learn exactly what I need for DSNL, but also learnt the foundations of written rules. Thank you!

Some teachers of linguistics should watch this video. This is the first time I see a motivated distinction between utterance, sentence and proposition (moreover, the specific notion of _clause_ fits well within this picture). An interesting and problematic issue arises from this explanation, though: can we quietly assume that we can find an universal predicate EAT which fits for every language in the world in the same way? شكرا جزِيلا يا مءلمي

Dr. Nimer I have a question about the verb in a propositional sentences. For example if we have 2 sentences: 1) Mary read the book 2) The book was read by Mary we agreed that these two sentences have the same proposition because of the relative meaning that these sentences tend to convey, but what about the verb here? read and was read ? can you explain more for us please! Thank you
@rehab79075 жыл бұрын
wadha al-marri hi proposition is the term for a kind of core sentence meaning , abstract idea that remains the same , not tied to particular words or sentences, so “ sharks hunt seals“ or “ seals are hunt by sharks” or “ seals are prey to sharks “ or “ These chase and kill these other “ point to tv 📺. All these sentences carry the same meaning that is proposition
@user-mh7bp6ly7u5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for clarifying. At first I was struggling with the propositional term because it is an abstract concept, but I realized that I wanted to understand the sense relation between the 2 sentences and how can the function of a verb dose affect the meaning in the sentence for instance, 1) The cat chased the rat & 2) The cat was chased by the rat.

Given we have a proposition, when a sentence needs to be derived back from proposition then how does it know the tense (e.g eat vs ate) ?
@merel36995 жыл бұрын
In proposition logic grammar is not of any importance. Proposition logic is mainly used to analyze the meaning of sentences, so then grammar wouldn't really be looked at. For the example of translators he gave, I think they would just have to look at the original sentence or use another kind of analysis system, because proposition logic doesn't deal with that.
@georgechristoforou9915 жыл бұрын
They would have to use non-monotonic logic that would take into account time

That's exactly what im looking for. I think one of these principles is enough for an utterance. Not necessary to be all of them included. I dont know.

So, if the the sentece is " all bachelors are unmarried man", then proposition's format is ARE ( all bachelors, unmarried man) ?
@infinitafenix31536 жыл бұрын
Cannot an utterance be also written?
@DrNimerAbusalim6 жыл бұрын
+Infinita Fenix Language is essentially spoken. Writing is just a convention we made up for convenience sake. Also, given that an utterance is a physical event fixed to a certain time, place, situation, and speaker, then no; only the spoken aspect is an utterance. Again, I could utter 'John ate a biscuit' two times and there would be two utterances, but notice that I only had to WRITE it once. So there is a clear distinction between spoken and written communication. Language exists as speech which is merely recorded in writing, but it doesn't have to be.

yes, both sentences share the same meaning. though the construction was different. the subject is " He" which is referring to a boy or a man, then the object is the meal.

it was all going smoothly until you got into the idea of Proposition, I got a bit confused; can someone explain it to me?
@merel36995 жыл бұрын
Hi, this is probably a bit late for you but I'll answer it anyway just in case somebody else was wondering. A proposition is basically the message independent of form. Two sentences are only the same if they are exactly alike in form, while two different sentences could still have the same proposition. The most important thing for a sentence is the form, while for propositions we don't care about form at all: what matters is the meaning. Hope this helps :)
@goodlkarivm65465 жыл бұрын
@@merel3699 so, proposition is only a concept. to give us the right meaning of a sentence.
