In this lesson, we are talking about the differences between a SENTENCE and an UTTERANCE.
A SENTENCE is a grammatically complete group of words expressing a complete thought.
A SENTENCE can either be in the spoken or written form.
A sentence consists of a Subject + a Verb (+ an Object)
For example:
-We study English is a sentence.
-She left is a sentence.
-In the kitchen is not a sentence
An UTTERANCE is any stretch of talk:
-a sequence of sentences, -a single phrase, -a single word
by one person, before and after which there is silence on the part of that person.
-an utterance exists only in the spoken form.
For example:
-“Ouch.”
-“Yeah.”
-“My dog.”
-“I hate apples.”
-“The movie is interesting.”
A paragraph can be considered an utterance if it is uttered without a silence.
Each utterance is unique, having been produced by a particular sender in a specific situation.
Because they are tied to a sender and a time, utterances can never be repeated.
In summary,
A SENTENCE is
- a group of words that convey a complete meaning.
- in both written and spoken form
- Structure is S+V(+O).
An UTTERANCE is
-a natural unit of speech bounded by breaths or pauses
-in spoken form only
-it has no specific structure.
