The fuel economy doesn't overcome the loss of reliability and loss of income . Higher maintenance and repair and its not likely to be able to be rebuilt. The lighter mx is not designed to be rebuilt.

We had 5 paccar mx 510hp engines. All 5 engines needed replaced by 700,000 miles because the block was corroded and unsalvageable. Meanwhile I have several Cummins in my fleet over 1.5 million miles just needed a small inframe rebuild around 800,000 much cheaper than a whole new block. All well maintained engines serviced at 25,000 miles intervals

As a Cummins Tech, don't go 60k on an oil change. Or do. I don't care. I get paid the same regardless. You just give me more work if you go that long. But in all seriousness, you can go to any truck dealer and get a Cummins serviced under warranty. If you get an MX, you have to go a Paccar dealer. In my area, you have 7 dealers who can service Cummins, only 1 that can service MX. Makes your options pretty limited.

Bought my 389 w/X15 in ‘21 when the KW was down and couldn’t get parts for up to 8 weeks in the middle of peak harvest. Couple months later got the KW repaired and sold it to someone that knew the shop that fixed it so I didn’t have to touch it again.

You FORGOT the most important difference... Cummins is very open to giving anyone (who buys one) the ability to work on them themselves. PACCAR practically forces you to go to the dealership for every trouble code. Parts for the PACCAR are, in many cases, more expensive.... even though their parts are made by Cummins. Buying the Cummins part can save you up to 25%.

Some years ago I drove a 2011 Pete 386 with the MX 13 and a 13 speed. After going through some stupid emissions issues the company decided to do a delete. The mechanic knew me and decided that because it was only a matter of selecting the right settings from the dropdown menus that he would turn it up a bit for me. Not really sure what it was actually making but it went from splitting down or outright downshifting on every hill between des moines and KC to never having to touch the split. The only Cummins I've driven to run that way was a n14 redtop with a 18 speed.

I’ve driven both and that extra power from the Cummins isn’t noticeable. What really makes a difference is the rear end gear ratio. I’d choose a Cummins because they’re easier to get parts for and seem to last longer before a rebuild though paccar has a better emissions system

We got a pair of T8s with identical heavy spec builds.... one MX and the other with the Cummins.... and you're pretty well right about the nearly unnoticeable power difference. Same rears and EF18, but with the same load, on the same float deck, with full tanks and me in the seat of each, I had to go to the lowside and split down once with the Paccar pulling the same hill after hitting the grade at 70. Stayed on the Highside with the Cummins, but had an itchy finger and bad twitch in my thumb for the last couple of lengths.

Spent $27k to repair, lost 2 months of income. Sensors went apeshit again so I traded it in at peterbilt for a new 389. I’ve had the 389 with Cummins engine for 4 years. Only issues are the govt mandated epa emissions controls on the truck. I went broke in 18 months with the Paccar. In 4 years with the Cummins, I’ve paid off property and still have money for necessities and maintenance and decent amount of savings for my 2nd retirement.

This is totol b.s. yes lighter, But if u put the same eng in the same truck the Cummins will definitely get better fuel mpg. Works less to do the same job. And yes I do own my trucks, and yes I have run both these engines.. also. If your only doing oil changes 60k and 70k miles your asking for eng failure. Period.

@@oliver_klozoff it’s really sad what’s happened to diesel trucks with def especially state side. For us, we can still delete in most of the country without issue. It should never have been allowed up here or anywhere imo. At -20°C and lower the def will freeze(we all know that) but we can go weeks at that temp and it plays a major role in the failure of the systems imo. We can’t even get def at the pump in the winter. I was travelling far from fuel stations in northern ab in deep winter and had to carry 5+ jugs a day because it would could burn a full tank in a day.

Cummins is currently the only engines that can be completely maintained but the owner without needing to rely on shops or dealers. All software and service info is available. But those oil change intervals are both ridiculous. Especially on any engine with EGR. The soot that finds its way into your oil will slowly eat away at the insides. Bypass oil filters help a lot, but the only way to clean up your oil completely is to change it out often 10,000-15,000 miles depending on how high your fuel mileage is. It's a $40,000 engine, why are you going to neglect and abuse it to cut it's useful life in half?

Solid steel every time, compared it to oriented strand board and plywood, cut a two foot wide strip of each and use them to span a hot set of coals the hose wisely and walk across, the solid ply wood will Carey the weight, and the strand board relies on the edges being fasentend all the way arround to produce the same performance.

I would take either of them. I have been left on the side of the road more than 15 times between the two(2014 and 19 mx13, and many many ISX and X12 X15) if you are actually needing the 605hp/2050lbft power you dont get the mileage to support the 60k miles service intervals. Thats part of why I was left on the side of the road, companies are all about pinching pennies. 4.7mpg is the shortest OCI for both motors
