Detroit has always been known as the Motor City, home of the automobile. However, the city once was a prominent destination for people traveling and shipping goods on the railroad. Big names like Grand Trunk Western, New York Central, Pennsylvania, and other roads populated the area. The city had an expansive interurban network too, complimented by the several larger railroads providing intercity and long-distance trains. After the disappearance of Detroit's interurban network in the 1950s, a commuter train eventually sprouted up in the 70s. The Southeastern Michigan Transportation Authority took over commuter operations from the GTW in 1974, and created SEMTA Commuter Rail. But why isn't it around today?
