Sena 50R Helmet Install and Phone Setup

I picked up the Sena 50R for a slim communication device to go on the motorcycle helmet. The Sena are built around pairing with other riders to keep clear communication with them. They also have the great benefit of being able to listening to music from your phone, answer calls, and hear notifications from your phone.

Just a FYI, if you run the cable from the speaker over the top of the helmet your FM reception is slightly better, especially when you get further away from the signal out in the bush.

Do you think this would be worth it if I went on dirt bike rides with it? Or should I look for a cheaper version?

I would go with the 50R or 50S if you want the better speakers or going riding where you may need more range. If you are looking to save a little bit on them and have a friend that would want one as well you can go for the dual pack to save. Other wise you can look for some cheaper options like the Cardo to save some money. Lastly if you ride in a group, make sure that you go with compatible devices as that will give you the best experience.

I couldn't tell where the speakers where placed. Are the speakers embedded behind the side cushing/foam? Doesnt this dampen the sound?

There is a recess in the side of the helmet for the speakers to go so it doesn’t press up against your ear. It also has some Velcro so you can just stick them on. The check pad has a cut out as well so it doesn’t effect the sound at all. I hope that helps.

I have just bought this but seems the 50 app is no longer available ??? at least here I Australia

They have replaced the 50 utility app with the Sena Motorcycles app now. Look for the new app and it should work.

I have a Sena 50R and will admit, it’s probably the most confusing and difficult device I have to set up properly. The instructions are not from America, same as the phone app. The options and menus are not specific enough. I had to figure everything out on my own to get the wifi dongle to work properly and the correct app settings to work with iPhone’s “Hey Siri” commands.

I found that to be true on the first set up but the new Sena app seems to be easier to use and I had less issue with it. I have my Pan Am tied to it as well so I just use the controls on the handbar which is far better than the on device ones. I agree the Sena controls aren’t the best.

Yes. I have it connected to my phone and the motorcycle at the same time. I’m pretty sure you can do it to tell phones as well.
