I'm excited to say that this box contains the new version of the R1 EVO Smart Helmet from SENA and we are jazzed! You may be asking, "What is a Smart Cycling Helmet?" We didn't know either, but now we're a little more informed on the subject. What other sorts of boxes should we open?

Great video! Been using Sena products for years on motorcycle helmets. Just ordered ebikes and this helmet to go with them. Being able to talk to each other really adds a cool dimension to the ride.

One question: Can a person set the helmet up where you talk with another person wearing a Sena R1 EVO hands free or must you push a button in order to speak to someone?

Hey Chris! Once the helmet is on you can be hands-free by saying "Hello Sena" (not sure if there are multiple wake words for the helmet, might just be "Hello Sena") then you can tell the helmet to turn on the mesh intercom. There are lots of things you can verbally tell the helmet to do as well. The mesh intercom is treated more like an open channel so once it's on and both people are connected to the same channel, then it would be like talking via Bluetooth or hands-free after that. You can add multiple people per channel and can switch between channels if you have multiple groups of people as well.

Can the R1 Evo be synced with another model of Sena helmut

So from what I understand, you can pair their mesh technology helmets together (M or R units) but they don't work with the regular R1 or M1. But the regular M1 and R1 CAN talk to each other. I think they utilize different communication protocols, so that's why it's only the EVO series talks to each other, and the regular series talks to each other. I hope that helped!

I see the helmet you have has the mesh feature but the r1 is Bluetooth. I’m sure they work together but what the difference. I’m wanting the same one you have but worried my friends might get the r1 which is cheaper. I don’t want issues with talking or pairing so not sure the difference between Bluetooth and mesh???

Hey Gary! I pulled this off the Sena site: "Yes. However, the rider with the R1 will need to use the +Mesh (www.sena.com/product/plus-mesh) with Mesh 2.0 compatible firmware in order to connect to the R1 EVO. The R1 EVO does not include the same Bluetooth Intercom feature that can be used on the R1 so the helmets will need to communicate using Sena's Mesh Intercom feature." If your friends have the older model, then they would just need to have the inclusion of that app to communicate with the EVO. If everyone always has their phones, might not be a big deal, but could get kinda weird if some people have phones, some people don't. It is possible, but you'd just have to make sure it works for everyone if your group is looking to all be on the same wavelength.

Hey Tyson! I was curious if it was the original boot up that took so long, but that appears to be the standard time. It's got alot to do for a helmet. Luckily the helmet side is always ready to roll :) no boot up on the protection side of things.

Hey Bee! The only other helmet I have on hand is another Large Giro helmet, and on that one, it looks like it may be a bit small, so it might work on a medium helmet. However, the Sena visor is manufactured to fit the profile of the R1, so my best guess is that it would not fit another helmet very well. I might recommend doing some searches for good third-party helmet visors that might fit better onto a new helmet. I hope that helps! :)

I think it will absolutely fit without a doubt. The sizing is fixed to the interior design of the helmet. All exterior dimensions, where the visor would go, are identical. Case in point: SENA only sells one size visor and you can purchase the same model for all.

Can anyone confirm R1 Evo can connect intercom with R1 (standard). Reason is, R1 is using bluetooth and R1 Evo is using Mesh tech.

Hey Roy! The helmet does not include MIPS technology. It would be awesome if it did! And as far as ratings, the Sena website lists the certifications as being CE, FCC, IC CE EN 1078, CPSC 1203. So I don't believe it has DOT certs either.
