Utility68 The debates over humane treatment of animals and abortion are linked. We should work out a standard definition for personhood that applies across species, one that isn't dependent on things like "has a heartbeat" or "can feel pain". The question of how we should treat non-persons and not-yet persons can be a second, separate debate.

Utility68 So right! My husband and I love our mini-doxie and treat her almost like a treasured grandbaby. But what we would do to care for her in a terrible accident or fatal illness is not a patch on what we would do for one of our seven grandkids in the same situation. Our little doggie goes with us almost everywhere, we bake chicken thighs for her, she has her own pillow and blanket on the couch and, I am almost ashamed to admit, we have hired babysitters for her when we've gone on trips. We raise cattle on our ranch, vaccinating the calves so they will be healthy when they are rounded up and sold at the auction ring to become steaks and hamburger. The cattle are not in the same category as our doggie and she is not in the same category as our children and grandchildren. And unborn babies in the mother's womb are the same as you, me, our children and grandchildren - they are human beings, just waiting for their time to be born. As the gentleman said , "all they need is time."

You said that there is a qualitative difference between human and non-human life. That people believe this to be so is the reason that declaring groups to be non-human is so effective as a prelude to violence. If we didn't believe that only humans mattered, then someone telling us that an intelligent alien race had been living with us this whole time wouldn't necessarily lead to violence. Also, dehumanized compared to what? Your unstated standard? Why should I accept a standard that nobody is willing to talk about in terms that I consider intellectually acceptable? Why should I accept your assumption that there is a qualitative difference that is unique to humanity? All you have is an emotional appeal with no substance to back it. I saw the video of the Planned Parenthood doctor - absolutely horrible!!! (She should not be called a doctor; doctor's save lives, they don't crush heads.) The only sad part about your video is that you weren't given a standing ovation; everyone in that chamber should have been in agreement with you! If the mother survives the attack or accident and the baby doesn't, the person committing the act might not could be charged unless it is determined the baby was born and took a breath before dying. I have to admit, it's only within the last couple of months that I've subscribed and watch for videos where Senator Lankford is speaking and, it gives me comfort in knowing that he is one of my Senators. I only vaguely recall when he first ran for office and, was elected and, like I've done with most things or people political, if at all, I would only take note of their existence when brought up in a conversation or, their name came across a particular form of media. I must confess, that has been to my own misfortune when it comes to James Lankford. I purposely go to the videos where he's speaking now and, not only does it give me great comfort in knowing that he is one of my Senators but, that he's willing and capable of delivering his remarks with such passion and, sometimes obvious heartfelt emotion and, I can't help but think of the dedication and passion our Founders had for this Nation in its infancy. I find myself praying for James Lankford and, I don't even know the man, nor does he know me...but then, maybe I do know him...after all, we're brothers...brothers in Christ and, to have him in the place where he is able to influence the Halls of Congress for the glory, honor and praise of Jesus Christ, gives me hope that, maybe we can get back to where God intended for this nation to be all along...as a city set on a hill, shining a light of liberty and freedom to the whole world. Thank you, James Lankford...thank you for being the blessing that you are, not only to us Oklahomans but, to Americans, from every state as you let your light shine, in Jesus' mighty and precious name!

Susan Wheeler Hi. What is the bigger picture? The biology of fetal development is prrrretty well-understood. Also, regarding language, science doesn't need to make anything sound any more or less human (human DNA is human DNA); rather, the semantics is such that calling a fetus an "unborn baby" is empathic appeal, ascribing emotions to some tissue (or a viable organism) that don't really have any place in scientific contexts. "Zygote" and "fetus" are *much more descriptive* than "baby".

A fact that has long troubled me is the fact that in 1961, when President Obama was born, abortion was not legal (PTL). Had it been, would President Obama been given life? I have often wondered if he has ever thought about that? Life begins at conception and I am deeply grateful for you taking a stand for life for these children. Daaaamn. As someone who has always been pro-choice this really calls me into reevaluating my morals. Like, I am comfortable that if an abortion is going to take place, having the opportunity to use what remains for research is a great benefit. But the shady back door deals that have been going on are just inexcusable. And I'm having a dilemma now about when a fetus becomes a child. Once the fetus feels pain I think now that's my definition of a child. Eye opening speech, good to see that there's at least some in politics that are still passionate about their job.
