On June 5 and 6, 2012 Alex Honnold made the first ever solo link up of Yosemite's Mt Watkins, El Capitan, and Half Dome, climbing 95% free solo with a few points of aid. He finished the solo triple in 18 hours 50 minutes.
This is raw footage from his climb of Watkins...

This guy is legendaric. First of all, the guts to do this whitout a rope or some security for falling at all, and the level of skills. Have seen real rock and he is a monster at bouldring.

His facial expression at 1:30 said exactly that… and the crazy thing is, after he set this record, he gave an interview with EpicTV, and they asked him what was the diciest part of climb… his answer was, "There really wasn't any parts" then he paused a second to think, and he said, "if there was one, it was probably when i forgot my chalk bag, and to add to it, it had stormed the day before, and so I had to climb the first half with out it…"

this reminds me of the time where I rushed to the bathroom at work to drop a deuce and go to sit down I didn't realize the toilet seat was up, I nearly fell into the abyss, my ass was literally inches from the water, but I pulled myself together and left uninjured from the near disaster, I could have been killed

I didn't read through all the comments, but I am sure it has already been noted...Alex almost dies exactly at time stamp 01:18. It is always good to have a backup plan. In Free Solo climbing, the backup plan seems simple, but is very tricky to successfully execute -- If you happen to fall, you need to make sure you completely miss the ground.

Alex excels at a number of things, one of which is BW speed climbing, as here. The style for that is that you can pull on or stand on anything. A route may have aid and free mixed in, and normally you would not pull on anything fixed on the free parts, if you wanted to say you had freed all the free only pitches. BWSC is based on the alpine ethic - they may pull on everything, and all the gear on a route could be fixed. you can aid any part on a mix route, it becomes a style issue and is slow.

That foot pop... just... wow. That would be enough for me to never come off a rope again (not that my balls are big enough to have ever come off a rope in the first place, so I technically have no context to begin with, but still, holy shit). One only gets so many foot pops in solo.
@HondoTrailside
@HondoTrailside 10 жыл бұрын
On this route Alex is also climbing un-roped. So it is pretty much up to someone like him to set the style. Since he has no rope, if that biner or bolt pops on him, he is dead. Aluminum is a freaky material fatigue wise, and he would be wise not to use gear when he has no plan B. So he is taking an added minor risk. In any case cheating is only a factor if you misrepresent the style you climbed in, and videoing the whole thing then putting it up on the tube is hardly misrepresenting.

In the U.S. they often abbreviate Aid Solo to Solo. A Solo unaided is always referred to as Free Solo. In Yosemite if you said you soloed everyone would accept that you probably aided. @leBurpmonkey Alex only climbs unroped about 10% of the time... Should they only put their logo on roped ascents? To be more precise though, Sterling sponsor the Reel Rock film festival, hence their logo appears. Plus, sponsorship is about reaching the viewers - That's the target, not Alex :)
