I’m a focus RS mk3 owner since 2017. It’s on stage 2 and have 0 problems yet. It’s a fantastic car and I’m planning keep it for a long term, but I must say this engine problems that some are reporting it’s a concern. Anyway, I know a lot of Rs owners that, like me, have them highly tuned, high mileage and have no big problems apart a new clutch! Before this I owned a escort Rs cosworth for 10 years and despite it was a great car I couldn’t live with the immense engine problems. Thanks for your video, great job.

Just change your oil. Use the one in your owner’s manual. You can use an FL400S filter which is superior to the FL910S that comes stock (on the US models at least). Oil and filter at half the recommended interval since you are tuned. This is basically what the owner did not do...

As a mk2 ST owner Ive never been interested in the mk3 ST or RS and thats a shame. Ive driven both in isolation, and wasnt particularly impressed with either, RS drives well and is more fun than a golf R though. With all these reliability/build issues with the engines and tuning beyond basic flash maps realistically requires water meth injection setup...ill never own one; id sooner own a mk7 fiesta st. If it werent for the RS badge these cars value wouldve tanked hard already, realistically they should anyway as theyre a mass built car unlike the mk1 and mk2 RS'. Its pretty shameful that some RS owners have had to swap st250 blocks in when going for big power.

It'd gotta be heart breaking to buy what for most is a dream car to have it grenade itself in such a manner. Gotta give credit to the dealer though for steeping up and offering to cover a percentage of the cost, it may not be a lot but end of the day they could have said its down to the warranty company to deal with it. You'd expect once these get up in the mileage those that haven't been checked or had a failure will go as well so it's a model people should do there homework on before purchasing, an £8000 bill after spending £20-30k for some would mean they are left with a 4 wheel drive paper weight given the current economy and uncertainty

At the end of the day , it really doesn't matter how it happened , as it's knackered . But I can't see how the journal fused together if the piston let go first . !! My theory is . , That it spun the bearing , but he carried on driving it after . Thus creating enough heat in the journal to fuse it together . Then the rod separated from the piston and then rotating through the block . !!!

We’ve seen stock cars that have ended similarly. People have suggested a weakness in the block but we think it’s a combination of things. The big question is; similar to the Volvo vs ST, why are less failures seen in the 2.3 Mustang? So many questions to answer - we may just have to pull a few failures and non failed engines apart! Thanks for the question and for watching 🙏
@dbwarrior86003 жыл бұрын
Funny mention the Mustang their was a guy in USA do a Mustang engine conversion build in a MK3 Focus ST, man that must of been a job
@trumpetrs48903 жыл бұрын
Different pressures in the 2.3 mustang and the RS engines (obviously due to less power) but the RS head is different too with a different locating tang on the head gasket to show for it. Also if you look at the big power builds used in motor sport, if they don’t change for the 2.0 block they reinforce the back of the cylinder wall on cylinder 3 as it’s noticeably thinner and more prone to heat degradation. Now that may not be a problem for road cars short term but motorsport has found this problem early due to excess stress straight away which caused the fatigue and failure to point toward this fix, but this same amount of fatigue will likely found be in the road cars it will likely just take longer for it reach the same levels to cause a failure. The 2.3 is a very interesting engine and in certain aspects it’s been over engineered, but sadly not in the reliability aspect but more cost saving and marketing spiel aspect. Sadly I feel these engines are a ticking time bomb though.

Just a thought re engine worries, i bought a capri Cologe engine 2.8 years back (1986 and still have it) they and the 3.00ltr Essex engine had what became a legendary weak point namely the fibre cam drive. I eventually changed mine to an alloy after 84 k miles and the Fibre cam wheel on removal was perfect. Oil was and still is changed frequently as is that on the Focus . Oil is an engines life blood..

How much over standard power was this running? With more power comes a greater chance of component failure. If things arent upgraded to cope with a increase in power and expecially torque things can go drastically wrong as is seen here. This is the kind of thing I used to see regularly when I was racing, with full race engines revving to north of 10K... but on a road car engine ? And a road car this young ? It's utterly shocking.

The mk2 is not without its issues. My S60R (basically the same engine) split a liner and ended up as scrap. My mk3 has been faultless for 4 years at 375bhp.

Track Time Videos there's a lot of cars out there with their faults etc, however just seem to be seeing a hell of a lot with the mk3 which I think is a real shame .

Recently found out my engine on my old mk3 let go not to long after I sold it. Sure it had around 27k when I sold it and when I checked the mot history it had only done another 1k in a year. I assumed the owner kept it in a garage but it turns out the engine went boom in that 1k miles.

@seanbarker70103 жыл бұрын
No not sure how or why. The car was running a stage 1 map from Adam tune. On the dyno the map looked fine and pulled 375bhp so not the most powerful map
@BDPerformanceWrexham3 жыл бұрын
I don think the state of tune has too huge a bearing on the failure... Standard cars have suffered the same fate - which is why we won't to compile a list of how, where and why with everyones help. As the owner to send details if you could... Thanks for the comments both

@BDPerformanceWrexham3 жыл бұрын
The Mk2 has its share of liner issues, piston issues and more. However these didn't become apparent until later in ownership, whereas the Mk3 issues were there from the start... A shame Ford didn't address is more the point on the later RS. Thanks both for your comments though :D

@@tracktimevideos5164 Its not. More fun to drive, looks good, sounds good, feels special. All things that the mk3 does not do.
@tracktimevideos51643 жыл бұрын
@@Nakke144 looks are subjective but I prefer the mk3. The engine does indeed sound better in the mk2. However the mk3 is in a other league to drive. Fwd is massively hindered, the mk3 can power oversteer on demand and the way it pulls you out of corners is something else. The gearbox and steering on the mk3 is far better too as it the interior. The mk2 wins on engine only imo. Theres not a production fwd car on the planet that I'd take over my mk3 RS or Impreza. Fwd is just such a compromised layout.
