I rode the 1100 miles of dirt/mud up the Alcan in the 70's on a 500 Suz. Can't afford a proper adventure bike now, but I did place 2nd in class in a motocross last summer. Won't be 80 until later this summer so I only have about 20 good years of riding to look forward to.

Well done. As a 6 decades motorcyclist myself, I take pride in my fully intact sense of adventure. In Australia the distances are vast, and services are few and far between. A lot of dirt. I am on my second klr650. It has taken me 107,000km so far. I have a couple v stroms for the better roads. My original has 160,000km and counting. Never miss an opportunity to find a new place to ride. Summer here can be brutal, and I don't recover these days as well as I used to. Wildlife here is always a factor. Hit a kangaroo at speed in 1986 that was life changing. Have hit dozens more since with much better outcome. I reckon I would rather deal with that than the distracted drivers texting on the main roads. It's great to see other "oldies" out and about doing what I love. Happy trails

A lot of that terrain looked pretty scary but the thing I’ve noticed is that the camera never captures the actual roughness of the terrain. Even though it looked like stuff I wouldn’t try to handle especially with a heavily loaded bike, it was probably even tougher than what we could see on camera. Terrific work!

Just found this channel while surfing the net. I’m 74 and retired after 41 years in law enforcement from Michigan. Was a motor officer for a bit. I currently ride a 2017 Indian Roadmaster. Plan to ride to Texas, soon to an Indian Motorcycle rally! I agree wholeheartedly, just have to take your time while on a road trip. However, the biggest challenge at my age is trying to stay as healthy as possible. My Bride has a gps tracker connected to our phones so she can monitor my ride and keep connected to me. God bless all of my mature and fellow wise riders. As it’s been said ,”keep the rubber side down.👍

At the end of the video it hit home especially growing older and how far one can push itself at that age. Just need to be aware. Don't overdo it and enjoy the ride so I know how you're feeling. Not much of a moto camper. I live in Pueblo, Colorado so when I go out down towards Silverton and that area I have a truck camper with a bike rack on the front of the old DR. Up on that and drive to my home base. I have a another senior partner in South fork and we just head out wherever we want to go. He was a logger for 30 years down in that area so he knows every trail and road. There is good riding partner. Get out the Colorado this year. Hope to see you. Thanks for the inspiration, I'm a 56 yo rider and look forward to riding when I'm 67! I'll share one of my tips with everyone, Bungee cords of any kind are the poorest excuse for securing anything on an off road motorcycle! Hence why he lost his tent. I always use conventional cam tightener style straps, never had an issue losing anything even when I've been tired and sloppy securing them. Riding a 2010 BMW GS 800 twin.

Try the SOAL route in Southern Ohio. It goes through the Ohio Shawnee Forest. It even has some additional advanced loops.

Tip: Don't just strap your things behind a strap, but actually wrap the strap(s) around it tightly, before tying it off. Then it is much less likely to slip out over rough terrain. Love your videos Sir, thanks for sharing!!

Wow, fantastic ride. A lot of gnarly sections. What a workout! Magnificent country though. Hats off to you tackling that solo. Just my kinda stuff, though I ride a street bike with ADV tires, so look for somewhat better road surface. Still wind up on roads like that some times, though. 65 yo, been riding since I was 9. I’m 65 soon to be 66 retired and looking for that next adventure. I own a Rv and want to travel out west and have decided to trailer an adventure bike rather than tow a car. I’ll be a new rider so I’m taking a skills course in the spring and will be bike shopping after that. I do not plan to attempt anything like you’re doing but want to experience logging road’s to trails depending on where I am. Mostly I’ll be taking it easy and learning as I ride and to be safe more than anything else. Your video and editing are so well done. Happy travels and thanks for the inspiration..

Really good video and a good look at the Oregon BDR. I am 65 years old and retire this summer, also have a Honda 300 Rally that has already done the Washington and Idaho BDR's. Someday I hope I will be able to do the Trans America trail as my daughter lives close to the end of the trail in Pennsylvania. Trying to get my brother into BDR riding but he is more into riding our Harley Davidson motorcycles. Our bikes both have over 100K miles on them riding the western states, but it isn't nothing compared to the dirt of the BDR's. Keep up the great videos they are inspiring.

Great to hear these older rider stories. I have two rides across the USA. The TAT in 2019 got me back into riding. Then WABDR, IDBDR, MABDR and WYBDR and ORBDR followed by return to Virginia on dirt. Got into videoing and most of the rides are on my channel. Love the freedom of the trail. Great to have a Brother to enjoy riding with.

Good video. The DR650 is such a great bike, I owned one as well as the KLR650 and F650GS DAKAR. It's probably mostly because I'm barely 5'4" but I found them all to be, in increasing severity: too big, too tall, and unnecessarily heavy loaded for off road, camping, and picking up. I consider my DR350 more than enough (a CRF300 too), but any 250 class is enough. Especially if you're taking your time, packing light, consider safety first, etc. and are a senior. Imagine falling off the downhill side of a trail with a loaded Tenere 700 or larger bike... fogetaboutit! You'll not get back on trail by yourself! So far my TW200 goes anywhere my XT225 goes, and the plan is to make a TW225 six speed! And don't rule out the CT90/110 with dual range hi/lo transmission if you're not going above 45mph roads. 😊

Good stuff, JR. I, too, am up there in age. Nursing a sprained ankle now from a tip over. Wear good protective gear, especially BOOTS. I have moved to motel sleeping for a lighter load and only haul it for single overnight trips.

Started riding again at 61, Thank for being a great inspiration to all of us and love all those tips. I ride the Coastal Areas of the Gulf of Mexico mainly. Let me know if you every venture this way. I've bought a camera and just start posting on KZbin. Hope to be on the rode soon after taking care of a few things on my KLR 650 and finishing my recovery from open heart surgery. A friend gave me my KLR two weeks before my emergency surgery. Didn't have a heart attack and I'm recovering quickly. Hope springs eternal! Keep posting those videos! Thanks again.

Just found your channel and subbed.used to ride and camp before 12hr work days and raising kids.now retired at 70 and trying to get back into it.got a couple of small bikes just need practice and roynd out my camping gear . Hoping hubby will join me.want a cargo trailer to take the bikes with us as we camp.its a dream , working on the house as well.gotta make time,i know.spring is hear! Thanks JR, for sharing the tips and the beautiful pacific NW scenery. I'm in WA. I'm also a senior 75. Got a bike for the first time in 45 years, a BMW r1100rt, 97. Not for off road, that's for sure. I'm more inclined to get a small trail bike for that. I'm getting set up for moto camping. I'm going to head toward the West side of the Olympic's, along the coast. See how it goes, maybe keep going South along the coastal roads. Cheers Mate !

A few weeks after I got my 800 DE I dropped it on a very sandy National Forestry Road. It took me about 45 minutes to pick it up. I should have done some practice runs on that procedure.

I think I'll share my choice of some gear I got to take touring. As an old guy I want to be able to sleep well. So, I bought two insulated air mattresses and a Big Agnes sleeping bag. I was going to use my old bicycle touring tent but I opted for the Big Agnes Wyoming. I figure that I might need to hunker down because of weather or just feeling wore out. I can do that in this tent. The rain fly area has standing head room. I could park the bike in it if I wanted to. Looking forward to Spring so I can try it out.

@@jrdepewI may regret the tent choice. It's a bugger to get set up. Probably get easier as I use it. I went overboard with the bag. Zero degree rated but that means I'll be comfortable when it's 35.

Senior riding. On my mind of late. As I close in on my 70th birthday I've begun to feel new limitations riding off-road. Especially when I'm alone and out of cell phone range. Some adjustments are in order and some fall within your tips. I'm not sure I can safely pick up my Royal Enfield Himalayan anymore so I just purchased an Eastbound MotoWinch. That should help pick it up as long as I don't break an arm or leg. And I see you carry a Garmin device. That's on my to do list as well. And some more aggressive tires. One other thing I've done is purchase a Honda Trail 125. It's light and will go anywhere I would take my Himalayan off road. And even into rougher tracks and single trail that I wouldn't attempt with the bigger motorcycle. Getting older does change things. I just need to be paying close attention so I don't miss the signs... I loved watching your video. Beautiful ride and thoughts. Thank you.

I’m with your brother, Two years ago I broke my leg while riding the Arizona BDR on my Yamaha T7. I spent the next six weeks contemplating my riding future . I decided I had two options quit riding or get a smaller bike OK only one option get a smaller bike last year I went back to Arizona and completed the route on my new DRZ 400 it made off-road riding fun again and a lot safer.
